Here’s what’s happening:
— Daily through September, Muscle Powered is holding a membership drive to recruit new members. All new and renewing members in the month of September will be entered in a drawing to win a Gregory Hiking Day Pack.
Muscle Powered works to make Carson City healthier for all citizens and safer and more accessible for bicycling and walking through education and advocacy, the promotion of bicycle and pedestrian friendly infrastructure, and developing and maintaining recreational trails throughout the city. Muscle Powered is also responsible for organized weekly walks, hikes and bike rides, on and off road, throughout Carson City. Go here to learn more and sign up.
— Diabetes Prevention Program, 9 a.m., Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness. Do you have pre-diabetes? In conjunction with the CDC and the National Diabetes Prevention Program, Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness offers a year-long program that has proven to be effective in reducing the risk of diabetes. — Carson Tahoe Health hosts Mindfulness Series, 4 p.m. Health and Wellness Institute, 1470 Medical Parkway, Suite 250. Join Dr. Nels Dahlgren as he guides you through the strongest evidence-based path to reducing chronic pain and suffering, improving quality of life. 6-week series every Wednesday.
— Ideas on Tap at Battle Born Social. The second in a series of monthly "Ideas on Tap" is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 5 inside the Battle Born Social Lounge, 318 N. Carson Street, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. "Ideas on Tap" is an interactive public conversation series designed to stimulate civil discourse on a host of issues important to people.
— Art Show Featuring the Work of Deana Hoover. The public is invited to an art exhibit featuring the art of Deana Hoover through September at Comma Coffee’s Backseat Gallery, with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m, Sept. 5.
The show is the last planned event featuring the current body of work, primarily featuring wild and domesticated animals in their natural environments. Several original paintings along with some small scale sculptures will be shown. Comma Coffee is located at 312 S Carson St in Carson City. Refreshments will be served. — Wine and Dine Watercolor Classes, 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm at Black Bear Diner, 900 S. Carson St. Students get a reminder text each week. Drop in basis - no monthly commitment necessary. — Nevada Arts Council Presents: Mountain Picassos: Basque Arborglyphs of the Great Basin, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, OXS Gallery, 716 N. Carson St. Ste. A, Carson City.
Basque tree carvings, or arborglyphs, have long been of interest to historians, Basque scholars, foresters and hikers. Carved by Basque sheepherders tending their flocks across the Great Basin, the carvings are at the crossroads where art, culture and nature come together.
The exhibit is based on the book of the same name by Reno’s Jean and Phillip Earl. The exhibit debuted July 30 and will remain in place through Sept. 7.
— The Capital City Arts Initiative, also known as CCAI, presents its exhibition, "Jenny Raven: The Creative Growth Years 1979 - 1984" with artwork by artist Jenny Raven in the city’s Community Center Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public through October 18, 2018. The Sierra Room is open from 8 am - 5pm.
— Visual Oasis: Works from Creative Growth, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents “Visual Oasis: Works from Creative Growth" at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery in Carson City. The exhibition, with art by 17 artists, will be in the gallery Monday through Friday until Sept. 27, 2018.
The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
— The Piper's Opera House in Virginia City is in need of an ensemble for its production of a Nightmare Before Christmas. Meet at Piper's Opera House, 12 B St, Virginia City at 5 p.m. Go here for more information.
— Jazz Jam-m-m with Cherie Shipley, Ron Savage, Eric Finkestein and the return of the One And Only Frank Perez is featured tonight from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at Living the Good Life, 1480 North Carson Street. See the Facebook page here for more information.
