The speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Michael “Mike” Smith, a retired high school principal who relocated to Carson City from the Memphis area in 2017. His PowerPoint presentation will commemorate the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the national holiday observed in his honor since 1986.

Carson City Ideas on Tap is back for the new year. After garnering support, and suggestions for future Ideas on Tap topics a majority of attendees wanted to hear from experts when it comes to your health, your money, your body and your technology.

Ideas on Tap is back at the Union Eatery and Brewery, 302 North Carson Street, on Wednesday, November 10, starting at 6 pm, recognizing The History and Culture of Native Americans, also known as American Indians and Indigenous Americans, are the indigenous people of the United States.

A town hall meeting with Carson City Mayor Lori Bagwell will be the topic for the Wednesday, Oct. 20 Ideas on Tap. We'll start at 6 pm, at the Adams Hub for Innovation, 111 West Proctor Street.

"Critical Race Theory and Why is it Under Attack?" will be Wednesday’s Sept. 8 Ideas on Tap topic of discussion to be held at the Union Eatery and Brewery in Carson City beginning, 6 p.m.

This is a free event and open to the public, in adherence with the CDC guidelines attendees are asked to wear a face mask. If you’re fully vaccinated, face masks are optional.

The next Ideas on Tap is scheduled for Wednesday, August 18, 6 p.m. at the Union Eatery & Brewery, 302 N. Carson Street at Proctor.

Mike Smith, Ward 4 candidate for the Carson City Board of Supervisors, will be the featured speaker at Monday's virtual Democratic luncheon. A retired high school principal, Smith currently serves on the Redevelopment Authority's Citizens Committee and the Symphony Association's Board of Trustees.

Truly a springtime to remember in Carson City as we say goodbye to April, which leaves us with a spontaneous final chill, and hello to Wednesday, May 1, 2019. Temperatures should head back up into the low 60s by afternoon. Looking ahead there's art showings and painting workshops, a C-Hill hike to see the firefighting sheep, a school district strategic planning meeting, a Salsa dance class, and "Ideas on Tap," a monthly series of interactive conversations at The Union Eatery and Taphouse.

Ideas on Tap, a monthly series of interactive conversations, returns this Wednesday, May 1. The discussion topic is “Do Concealed Weapons Make Our Community Safer?”

The event is at The Union Eatery and Taphouse, 302 N. Carson Street in downtown Carson City. The discussion begins at 6 p.m. and lasts until 7:30 p.m. The event is free. Door prizes will be given out.

Ideas On Tap, a monthly community event focusing on improved discourse through topic discussion, has its first meeting of the new year on Wednesday, Jan. 2 at The Union Eatery-Taphouse-Coffee, 302 N. Carson Street in Carson City.

Held the first Wednesday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m., the topic for this discussion is "Public Trust in the Media and the Importance of Journalism to our Democracy."

February's discussion, scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 6 at The Union, is "Brain Drain."

As you know, we did not have a November Ideas on Tap. But I’m happy to announce we now have a new home: The Union Eatery Taphouse Coffee at 302 N. Carson Street.

Ideas On Tap, a monthly conversation and public discussion about issues important to the community, is moving its November venue from Battle Born Social to Bella Fiore Wines in downtown Carson City, said event moderator and founder Mike Smith.

No sympathy for voter apathy was the focus of Wednesday night's "Ideas on Tap" gathering at Battle Born Social restaurant in Carson City. Panelists spoke of voter passions, voter reform, the power of the ballot, voter education, and making sure every citizen and registered voter understands the process.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Mike Smith, owner of Shiny Shoes in downtown Carson City, last Sunday to talk about his "Ideas on Tap" concept as a monthly community event in the Nevada state capital.

Conversation is a skill Mike Smith has polished to a gleam even more than the shoes he has shined since he was a youth growing up in Olive Branch, Mississippi.
