AARP National has just released the winners of their Community Challenge Grants and the Brewery Arts Center is on the list!

For the third annual AARP Community Challenge, AARP received more than 1,660 applications from nonprofits and government entities, resulting in a highly competitive selection process.

Heading into the midweek and the last day of school in Carson City, we wish to put out a hearty, warm thank you to the staff and teachers out there for a tremendous school year. Onward and upward. Here's what's happening Wednesday, June 5, 2019 around the capital city.

Truly a springtime to remember in Carson City as we say goodbye to April, which leaves us with a spontaneous final chill, and hello to Wednesday, May 1, 2019. Temperatures should head back up into the low 60s by afternoon. Looking ahead there's art showings and painting workshops, a C-Hill hike to see the firefighting sheep, a school district strategic planning meeting, a Salsa dance class, and "Ideas on Tap," a monthly series of interactive conversations at The Union Eatery and Taphouse.

Spend the day on Wednesday, April 3 at a "Paint Like Seurat" workshop at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.

Georges Seurat was a French post-Impressionist artist who is best known for the painting technique known pointillism. Have fun spending the day learning about him and practicing in his style. He painted in oils, but you're welcome to paint in any medium you prefer.

Good Day Carson City. It is Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018. Health and wellness, art events, live jazz and “Ideas on Tap” are featured around town.

The public is invited to an art exhibit featuring the art of Deana Hoover through September at Comma Coffee’s Backseat Gallery, with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m, Sept. 5.

The show is the last planned event featuring the current body of work, primarily featuring wild and domesticated animals in their natural environments. Several original paintings along with some small scale sculptures will be shown.

Meet the artist on the first Wednesday of September at 5 p.m., or view the art throughout the entire month of September.

The Brewery Arts Center in Carson City is holding a grand opening Saturday for its newest endeavor, Expresso Yourself Cafe, an art experience with splashes of inspiration and creativity.

Create abstract, mixed media, collage while sipping wine or coffee. Instruction will be provided by artist Deana Hoover.

One beverage is included in the price. Canvases, paints, and other supplies are provided (and you are welcome bring in images and items you’d like to add to your art as well).

The event is Friday, Dec. 8, 5:30 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 West King Street. Go here for more information.

Students will develop painting techniques and skills in this open studio class. Work on your own paintings from subject mater you chose for yourself as you take your art to the next level. Create artwork based on realism, abstraction, landscape, portraiture, or whatever style you prefer. Learn artistic technique, such as composition, color, paint application, texture, and expression. The instructor will provide one on one instruction throughout the class. 

Students may use oil, acrylic, or watercolor paint. Dry media is also welcome.

Whatever level you are, students will develop drawing techniques and skills in this open studio class. Work on your own projects from subject mater you chose for yourself as you continue to improve your skills. The first 15 minutes of class will be instruction involving drawing techniques, and the rest of class you will apply what you learn while you work on your own individual work with help and instruction as needed.

Bring your own drawing supplies and source materials (such as photographs or drawings you wish to paint).

Paint outdoors on the first Saturday of each month from 10:00am - 1:00pm. Each fun and exciting class gives encouragement and support as you create art in the ever changing outdoor environment. Step by step instruction, often including one on one help, is provided from locations that vary each month.You will learn and practice the concepts that translate a three dimensional scene to a two dimensional surface, including choosing a composition, understanding value, shapes, edges, and texture, as you create your compositions.
All levels of artists are welcome.

This fun and exciting class is designed for beginning as well as more experienced students. You will learn techniques in creating non-functional ceramics as you learn to use clay to build artistic sculptures. You will be exposed to concepts such as composition, weight, color, form, and texture while creating contemporary pieces and beautiful three dimensional ceramic art.
Students will need to bring a towel. The supply fee covers clay, glazes, firing, and everything else you will need to complete multiple projects.

Do you have a novel, memoir, or creative non fiction you want to write? Learn the steps you need, whether you have an idea already or not. This class helps you with all of the prep work you need before you begin writing.

Close your eyes and draw. In this class you’ll learn to interpret your own quickly created abstract art to understand your soul’s journey through this life. Why are you here? What is your purpose in life? How can you live in harmony with that purpose and be truly happy and fulfilled?

In this fun and safe environment you’ll learn to interpret simple form and color as a tool to quickly cut through confusion and live your biggest, happiest, most authentic life.

Join psychic medium Deana Hoover at Comma Coffee 312 S Carson Street in Carson City Friday July 8, from 5:30 - 7:00pm for the fun and informative class The Psychic Arts - Auras.

Learning to see auras is not something you need to work at. It’s something to relax and open up to. In this class you’ll different ways to perceive auras and how to interpret colors. You’ll also learn tools and techniques for self-healing, cleansing, and strengthening your personal energy. No previous experience is necessary.

The class is $35. Payments can be made on the day of the class.

Introduction to the Psychic Arts - Workshop at Comma Coffee

Join psychic medium Deana Hoover at Comma Coffee 312 S Carson Street in Carson City on June11th from 10:00 - 2:30 for the workshop Introduction to the Psychic Arts.

This workshop will introduce you to basic concepts of the psychic arts. Learn how to communicate with your spirit and animal guides, how to explore past lives, get an overview of the use of diving cards such as the tarot, and much more.

Many of us will never forget where we were when we first heard about the hijacking and subsequent attacks on the World Trade Center. September 11, 2001 is burned into our collective memory. At 8:30 a.m. this morning there will be a memorial service at the 9/11 Memorial in Mills Park where an I-beam from the fallen towers now serves as a reminder. Even if you cannot make it to the ceremony, please take a moment of silence to remember.

The Retired School Employees Association, Carson Unit will be meeting on Friday, September 11th, 10:30 a.m. at Q's restaurant. Membership is open to all retired and former school employees from across the nation. Enjoy the fellowship with retirees in our area and awarding scholarships to high school and college students who are pursuing degrees in education. Dues for the year are $10.00. Lunch is $10.00. Local author and artist Deana Hoover will be our speaker.

It’s the first Wednesday which means that Comma Coffee is hosting an art reception for their Backseat Gallery. Don’t miss the exhibit by Su Limbert in the Legislative Gallery, the session is over and the exhibit closes at the end of the week. While you’re downtown head over to the BRIC building on Proctor for the BRIC Art 5 exhibit. By the Nevada State Museum you’ll find the Nevada Arts Council: their gallery is exhibiting Pasha Rashat.

Life Drawing and Painting is for students of all experience levels. Instruction is offered for novice artists, but more experienced artists are welcome to delve in and work with a live model with years of experience. Students bring your own supplies in your favorite medium. Easels and a work station will be provided. Payment for class is made to the instructor at time of class.
