Don Q's weekly Nevada and Sierra fishing report for Aug. 14-20

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra. This report is for the week of Aug. 14-20.

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Water temperature and clarity are good but there are “line fouling” grass and other water hazards about. Fishing has been great though as feeding times have extended further into the morning and early afternoon, making those prime times for getting hook-ups. It is advised to be mooching and trolling since the bite is so good right now.

BISHOP CREEK AREA, CALIF:
Rick and Patti Apted - Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425) (www.lakesabrinaboatlanding.com) reports:
Lake Sabrina:
Please note our hours: Store Hours Sunday thru Saturday 8:00am to 5:00pm
The Cafe is CLOSED for the Summer!
And the kitchen at Lake Sabrina is now officially closed for the 2013 season. We'll be open for snacks, cold drinks and tackle from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Sorry, there will be no more homemade pie or ice cream until next season. We'll be scraping and painting the building - joy of joys!
The report is almost a re-run of last week - we had another visit from our ‘friendly neighborhood bear’ on Tuesday, but rather than the middle of the night – ‘Yogi’ came strolling across the parking lot at 1:00pm (that’s in the middle of the day!).
Bryan got a few good shots – he checked out the freezer, the gut can and of course the big dumpster – alas, not much was to be had.
The bald eagles are still entertaining those taking a walk to the back of the Lake. We now have an Osprey cruising the Lake – quite spectacular to see.
Not much has changed on what’s working and what’s not - Fishing in deeper water (that would be behind what is normally the Island or taking a bit of a hike to at least the front of the back natural Lake) with Nightcrawlers or Power Bait. Fishing the inlets with a fly and a bubble, Nightcrawlers, Power Bait or Lures are getting limits.
Got a good load of stockers from the Department of Fish and Game last Friday. They’ll keep stocking as long as they can get to the water – not sure how much longer.
A few more fish in the three pound range caught during the week, but this week both by youngsters – Brice Uyeda (13 years young) of Granada Hills landed a 3-pounder on Orange Cheese while Jacob Buccola (10 years young) pulled in a 3-pounder giving him bragging rights over his brother Niko and Dad Tito. Lots of memories made this week.
So, the forms for the guardrails have been stripped away from the bridge and it looks like those humungous steels beams might be removed shortly – getting pretty exciting – it’s almost done!
That date for the bridge is still set for the end of September.
Pretty much all the smoke is gone – We’re crisp & squeaky clean up here in the Sierras again! This week’s temps are expected to be in the mid-40s for the lows and in the high-70s for the highs. You can check NOAA’s website at www.weather.gov and enter ASPENDELL, CA on the site and it will give you a fairly good hint at the weather up at the Lake or check in with Howard at www.MammothWeather.com.
Remember when using the bug juice and SANITIZER you need to really wash your hands before fishing - then rub some Salmon Egg juice, worm dirt or Anglers Bros Trout attractant to take that smell off.
Also, remember your polarized dark glasses and sunscreen.
We’re going to start a bit of maintenance on the building, so the deck will be off-limits unless you’ve got a scraper or paint brush in your hand.
If you happen to come by and see a ‘CLOSED – GONE FISHIN’ sign on the door (during the week), it’s because we haven’t had a car in the lot for at least an hour or two – hope you understand the closed sign – the fish are calling. Bryan will be here during the week periodically to give us a chance to get off the mountain.

BISHOP CREEK AREA, CALIF:
Jared Smith - Parchers Resort (760-873-4177) (sierrasmitty@cebridge.net):
South Lake:
South Lake Landing is closed for the season.
South Fork Bishop Creek:
Despite higher than normal flows, fishing in the South Fork was excellent again this week. Salmon eggs, Gulp pinched crawlers and spinners were the best. With the higher flows, folks were having the best luck in the slower moving holes near the campgrounds or where the creek crosses under the road. Big fish out of the stream was a beautiful 3.43lb Rainbow caught near Willow Campground by young Richie Cranmer from San Pedro, CA using a gulp worm.
Weir Pond:
Wide open bite at Weir Pond this week for both the fly and spin folks.
The DFW has done a great job keeping the pond well stocked and there are still tons of Brookies and smaller model Browns.
Intake II:
Not a whole lot of reports from the Intake this week the reports we did get were all positive. Most folks were able to scratch out a limit with Power bait or nightcrawlers. Neal Matsuno of Los Angeles managed to fool a gorgeous DFW Brood Stock fish on  a Phoebe. The beautiful hook jaw weighed in at 3.72lbs.
North Lake:
North Lake continues to be a hot spot in the Bishop Creek Canyon with most anglers reporting limit style action on  stocker rainbows with the occasional lunker to 4lbs mixed in. Garlic power bait, Thomas Bouyants and trout worms are producing best.

BUCKS LAKE, CALIF:
Bryan Roccucci of Big Daddy's Guide Service (530-283-4103) (www.bigdaddyfishing.com) reports:
Bucks Lake just keeps kicking out fish. You can almost pick the kind of  fish you catch by where you fish on the lake.
You want Rainbows; better stay in the Bucks Creek arm.
If it is Brookies or Browns you are looking for, head to the Mill Creek side of the lake and work the creek arm around towards Rainbow Point.
Many areas are holding small Brook Trout and a lot of them, but keep working and you will find areas with more quality fish.
How about Kokanee; there are plenty of them from Haskins Channel towards the dam stacked up right now at 40 to 45 feet.
What about the Mackinaw; they are out there and on the bite. The larger Macks have been, and are usually tough to come by this time of year, but there are plenty of active 2 to 4 pounders hanging out in some of the deeper spots of the lake.
Just in case you are counting that is 5 species of sport fish all in this small but beautiful lake.
We have been seeing 20 to 30 fish landed each morning with a number of other fish being lost as well. That is some prime time action!
I have been keeping some for the clients and releasing quite a few. Most days we have managed to catch 4 out of the 5 species with several of the days providing the "Bucks Lake Slam" a perfect 5 for 5. Pretty neat to be able to see that kind of variety all in one place.
For the trout and Macks I have been working small spoons in 25 to 40 feet of water staying fairly close to the bottom.
The Kokanee have been hanging around that 40 foot mark and have been hitting Uncle Larry's Spinners behind dodgers tipped with corn.
Bucks Lake really is a hidden gem here in the mountains light pressure (especially this time of year) beautiful scenery, and great fishing.

CARSON RIVER, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Very low water conditions. Very few places to fish.

CHETCO RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
The Chetco River mainstem upstream of the power lines (RM 2.2) will close Aug. 1 through Nov. 1.
Tributaries remain open for trout fishing per the zone regulations.

CONVICT LAKE AND CONVICT CREEK, CALIF:
Convict Lake Resort (800-992-2260) (www.convictlake.com) reports:
Hello Convict Lake fishing report followers!
First off, a huge thank you goes out to the firefighters who have been working on the Aspen fire. It's at 85% containment and the smoke is no longer a major issue on the east side.
Summer will be over before you realize it. Don't miss out on the long daylight hours and the prime fishing. Stop by the general store to get up-to-date information on what is working out on the lake and at the creek.
Catch of the Week:
Brooke Hill from Upland, CA with a great catch from Convict Lake. Brooke was using Gulp Cheese/Garlic Power bait and was posted up on the South Shore when she landed this beautiful 3 pound and 6 ounce rainbow.
Great job Brooke!
Other Notable catches this week:
Kevin from Van Nuys, CA landed a nice 2 pound 9 ounce rainbow.
Kevin was using Power Bait Turbo and was fishing at Hangman's Tree.
Craig Finney of Long Beach, CA hooked a beautiful 2 pound rainbow.
Craig was using Orange Power bait and was fishing at the South Shore.
Tactics/Bait:
The most successful Power bait colors were rainbow, orange and cheese. Choosing garlic Power bait is always a wise decision. The largest fish this week was caught with garlic Power bait.
Red/gold or Blue/Silver Thomas Bouyants, Rooster Tails and Gulp Pinch Crawlers are typically very productive in the lake.
Convict Creek also fished well this week. It may have been stocked but I didn't get any official word if this was true.
Try using Mice Tails, Power Worms or Sierra Slammers in the creek. Hangman's Tree and the South Shore were the new hot spot this week.
Other locations to try are the Inlet, North Shore, Jetty, Outlet, West Shore, Creek, Handicap Pier and Hangman's Tree.
Here is a list of other baits/lures that can be productive:
Trout Teasers, green or brown Marvel Fly Lures, Panther Martin, Needlefish, Thomas Bouyants, Green Wooly Booger and Lip RIpperz Hatchery Dust on Power bait.
Other Resources:
View our Convict Lake Fishing Map and Fishing Rig Suggestion  brochures. Both brochures are available in the General Store.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Fishing has been pretty good in McGee Bay.
Try Stevie's Wonder  gray/black in 8-10 feet of water.

Water temp is in the 70’s.
Trolling has been good in the channel. The bigger fish are 20 – 30 feet down. Dick Nite Copper Red heads, Red Dot Frog and Fire Tiger patterns have been working well.
Bank fishing in the morning before 9 has been best for trout.
Wally Wright caught a nice 18 incher this morning at Mallard Cove.
Fishing for catfish has been good off of Grasshopper and at Eagle Point in the evening.
No report from Fly Fishing, however there was a damsel hatch yesterday.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Trout action remains fair with the best fishing taking place in the early morning hours. The fish are taking Power Bait or night crawlers.
Largemouth bass in the 1.5- to 2-pound range are feeding on crayfish so lures imitating crayfish have been the most productive.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Trout action has remained the same over the past week with fish taking Power Bait and night crawlers in the early morning hours and slowing way down once the day starts to heat up.
Bass action has been good, but the weed growth along the shoreline may interfere with efforts to reel in your catch. A fast retrieve once you hook up will help get the fish past the weed beds.

FEATHER RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Salmon season is in full swing , with catches ranging anywhere between 10 and 35 pounds. Make sure to use quikfish, spinners and jigs primarily.

Courtesy of The Wiggins Trading Post.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Water flow is  down to  6 CFS. Fishing is good but the heavy weed growth makes it a challenge. Trico hatch has slowed. Best results with nymphs.  Buckskin nymphs, caddis pupa and small pheasant tails. Some decent dry fly fishing in the afternoon with CDC caddis and Hot Creek caddis.

Middle Twin Lakes is the best bet for fly rodders.
Doc's Twin Lake Special black or brown.

LAKE MEAD, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Reports from anglers on the water have been light but those venturing out can have success. To improve the odds for striped bass, try fishing in 60 to 100 feet of water. Adjust your target depth throughout the day as the water temperatures change. Work various swimbaits, live shad if they are available or cut anchovies to entice these fish.
Largemouth bass have been found in the backs of the coves or along rocky points. If you find fish following the bait, try changing the color lure or vary the speed of your retrieve in order to stimulate the bite. Fish may not strike at what appears unnatural.

LAKE MOHAVE, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Anglers are finding good fishing for the various species of bass found in the reservoir. Out of Cottonwood Cove, the smallmouth, largemouth and striped bass have been hitting mostly on anchovies. Striped bass can be found in 50 to 60 feet of water while the largemouth and smallmouth are in weed beds at depths of 20 to 30 feet. Catfish are taking night crawlers, anchovies and processed stink baits.

OREGON PACIFIC OCEAN AND BEACHES, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:

Fishing for bottom fish has been a little slower this past week.
Anglers have been catching a few chinook salmon just outside of the Coos Bay bar. Trolling with cut plug herring will work well. Don’t forget, when salmon fishing in the ocean your hooks must be barbless.
The Nearshore halibut season has closed as of July 26.
The next Summer All Depth Halibut fishing days will be August 16-17.

ORVILLE LAKE, CALIF:

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF:
John and Carolyn Webb of the Virginia Lakes Resort (760-647-6484) ( HYPERLINK "mailto:vir@qnet.com" vir@qnet.com) report:
Some welcome cooling for this elevation hit the Sierra with no prediction of moisture through most of next week so we can expect temperatures to be in the range of 67 to 71 degrees.
Temperatures did dip into the 30’s for a few days and as low as 26 in Bridgeport killing a lot of vegetables gardens.

The parking lots of both Virginia’s have been full most of the week except for a few hours early in the morning, and the creek was stocked this week by DFW and everyone was walking out with stringers and a lot of really nice fish.
DFW stocked ten additional trophies along with the normal plant again this week with some nice two-pounders coming out of Trumbull Lake.

Fishing really slowed up on the 10th due to the huge number of anglers that hit the 3 lakes in the canyon for 3 solid days and the parking lots at both lakes were packed.

Bait for the week:
Salmon eggs and Nightcrawlers with natural garlic power bait, salmon peach and garlic rainbow glitter were all working well.
Some odd combinations took some Alpers Trout like Schad crankbait, mallow/worm rig and even Christmas trees.
Seems this time of year the trout have seen every imaginable offering and are staying with the staples of worms and salmon eggs.

Lures:
Still working are Red/Gold Thomas Buoyant’s, Kastmasters, plain gold spoons.  Various rainbow colored anything did fairly well along with red/gold Hot Shots showing great action for most of the week.

Fly: Action was good on olive woolly buggers, Virginia Lake special, also try bead head nymphs, caddis emergers, Rickard’s callibaetis nymph, large black ants, AP nymphs in olive, San Juan worms, Grey Hackle yellow’s and small mosquitoes.

Backcountry:
Has been producing on black gnats, Adams, and Griffith’s Gnats from Blue Lake up through Cooney, and the Frogs are still hit and miss but very small due to the high volume of anglers in the area.  Both Moat and Red Lake were hitting a lot of dries on a bubble and a fly and also a fly rod but again nothing big.
Take care as mountain lion tracks were spotted in a patch of mud around mountain on the back side of Frogs.
The mosquitoes:
Are still around but still hanging in my warm office looking for that AB Negative blood so don’t forget to pack THE DEET.
