Lyon County Sheriff’s Office message of the week: Sheriff, Deputies attend Car Show

I had a great opportunity to meet and speak with many people last week at the Dini’s Car Show in Yerington, NV. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office continually has a booth at many local events. Our Administrative Assistant Kayla and I worked the booth for the entire day. We entered our armored vehicle into the car show, unfortunately it was not eligible to win any prizes, however it was a hit with the crowd.
Many local citizens approached the booth with their concerns and asked numerous questions regarding the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office. The concern or complaint we heard the most was traffic related issues on various streets and roadways throughout the County. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has increased our presence on roadways significantly, with some areas increasing the amount of vehicle stops by over 100%! We will continue to aggressively enforce traffic laws.
We had numerous questions about the Sentinel. The City of Fernley purchased the Sentinel for the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office using grant funding. We kept a tally, and 264 people asked if they can borrow the Sentinel for the weekend.
The Sentinel is deployed several times a year throughout Lyon County in a SWAT level capacity. The Sentinel keeps our Deputies safe during dangerous operations.
“The IAG Sentinel TRV is an armored rescue vehicle designed for tactical response teams. Standard vehicle armoring is available up to the CEN B6/NIJ Level III specifications, with add-on armoring available for .50 cal and B7/NIJ Level IV that is rated to withstand multiple impacts from armor piercing 7.62x51mm rifle ammunition. The armoring system on the Sentinel protects the entire cabin with blast protection underneath the vehicle. The engine bay and fuel tank are also armored to prevent the vehicle from being disabled from ballistic threats or shrapnel. An optional turret system can be integrated to work in conjunction with the armored roof escape hatch.
High payload wheels and tire package features an integrated run-flat and bead lock system to prevent the tires from dismounting from the wheel, as well as enables the vehicle to continue operating in the event of tire punctures. Individual captain seats are featured in the first two rows, with parallel bench seats in the rear with storage compartments. Each seat is outfitted with a harness to properly secure the occupant. The vehicle can be outfitted with a large variety of equipment and customized to suit the specific mission requirements and application.”
Illegal narcotics continue to be a major and valid concern of the community. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office continues to target those that choose illegal narcotics over our quality of life. If you pay attention to our weekly mugshots you know that illegal drugs are a part of numerous arrests.
The leniency on crime and jail time comes from our legislature. Criminal offenders are commonly released from jail in less than one day. (The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office does not release offenders, we only hold them) For this reason it is common to see repeat offenders arrested over and over again, consistently for drug related charges, or drug related behavior.
As Sheriff, I heavily disagree with the direction our legislature has taken the court system, however we operate in a set of guidelines outside of our control. That doesn’t mean that we don’t hold up our end of the bargain in the legal system, we will (and are) aggressively target criminal activity in Lyon County. Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Deputies are making more arrests, and continue to work extremely hard to protect our community.
