WNC hosts social gathering Friday for Journey of Hope cyclists
Western Nevada College and the Nevada Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities will host a Journey of Hope Celebration on Friday in Carson City for 35 cyclists who are riding from San Francisco to Washington, D.C., to support those with disabilities.
Friday’s free social gathering, which promotes disability awareness and community education, is open to the public and runs from 5 to 8 p.m. in front of the Dini Student Center at WNC.
Community members can visit with the cyclists, listen to keynote speakers, examine disability resource information, connect with local organizations committed to serving and supporting those with disabilities, as well as enjoy free food, a prize raffle, music, dancing and karaoke. Participants can receive raffle tickets by visiting vendor booths. The grand prize is an iPod.
Journey of Hope, which is made up of Pi Kappa Phi members, annually participates in the Push America’s 67-day, 4,000-mile ride from the West Coast to Washington, D.C., as a means to bring awareness and understanding to people with disabilities.
“The cyclists are college students, and our college community is a great fit to host an event like this,” said Susan Trist, coordinator for disability support services at WNC.
Carson City is the first of several Nevada cities that the riders will visit. To commemorate Friday’s event, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has proclaimed that June 6-14 Journey of Hope week.
“Community is where we live, work and play. It’s where our most basic needs are met and where we turn for help,” said Kari Horn, NGCDD projects manager. “People need to know what supports are available to them and that they are not alone within their communities. Events such as these help achieve that goal.”
