Carson City Parks Foundation seeks nominations for Mills Park Wall of Honor Community Awards. The Foundation for Carson City Parks & Recreation, in conjunction with the Carson City Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Department, periodically recognizes, through their “Community Awards” deserving individuals, organizations, and businesses for outstanding contributions made to further the combined missions of the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation and the Carson City Department of Parks, Recreation, and Open Space. FCCPR seeks nominations of organizations, and businesses to be recognized in 2020. The categories for which nominations are sought are Organization of the Year, and Business of the Year. The Foundation Board is honoring the late Sandy Osheroff, former FCCPR Treasurer and Board Member as the 2020 Volunteer of the Years. Honorees will be added to the Wall of Honor located at the entrance to the Marv Teixeira Pavilion at Mills Park. The 2020 Community Awards ceremony will be held at the wall on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, at 5:30 pm as part of National Parks Month. The public is invited to send award nominations and may do so by obtaining a nomination form by clicking on the following link: 2020 FCCPR Community Awards Nomination Form. Online auction for Carson Tahoe SPCA hosted by Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery. Artsy Fartsy Gallery is hosting an online auction in which all proceeds will benefit the Carson Tahoe SPCA. Two positions open on Carson City redevelopment citizens committee. The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Redevelopment Authority Citizens Committee. There are two open positions: One Business or Property Owner Redevelopment Area 1 and one partial term for the Citizen-at-Large position.
— Citizen-at-Large is a partial term that will expire January 2021
— Business/Property Owner Redevelopment Area 1 is for term that will expire January 2023.
The Committee’s primary purpose is to make recommendations to the Redevelopment Authority on Redevelopment Area Plans, incentive programs, special event funding, and other matters pertaining to the Redevelopment District. Applicants should be aware that a minimum commitment of up to ten hours a month is expected. All members will serve without compensation. Applicants must be Carson City registered voters. All applications submitted to this office will be considered public information. Applications will be accepted until April 2, 2020. Interviews for the volunteer position will be tentatively scheduled for the April 16, 2020 Board of Supervisors meeting.

Carson City Jazz and Beyond committee announces 2020 art contest. Mile High Band Association’s 2020 Jazz and Beyond Festival Committee is sponsoring an art contest for Carson City, Lake Tahoe area artists. Selected entries in the competition may be used to promote the festival, and the winning entry will be featured on the festival’s advertising poster and program cover. A T-shirt may also feature one of the designs submitted. The entry deadline is April 1, 2020. Participation is free. The artwork will be judged by the Jazz & Beyond committee. The winner of the competition will receive a certificate of appreciation from the Jazz & Beyond-Carson City Music Festival and a cash award of $100. Alexander Cassimus, art project chair, said, “The artist’s work will be front and center, viewed by thousands of festival patrons.” Entries must be 11”x14” and may be in any two dimensional medium (photography, digital collage and photography, watercolor, acrylic, oil, etc.). All entries must be matted, backed, and submitted in a protective sleeve. Each submission must include the entry form and a digital image of the artwork as an email attachment to info@jazzcarsoncity.com, or on a CD or thumb drive. It may also be submitted by Drop Box to info@jazzcarsoncity.com. Entry forms are available for download from the festival website, jazzcarsoncity.com. Artists are to deliver their entries to the Nevada Artists Association Gallery, 449 West King Street, Carson City, NV, by April 1. Gallery hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Capital City Arts Initiative to present 'Impact' exhibition featuring Lake Tahoe artist Paula Chung. Daily through May 28. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition "Impact" by artist Paula Chung at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery in Carson City. The exhibition will be in the gallery through May 28, 2020. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Paula Chung’s Impact works address violence on sports fields, battlefields, and the streets. Through the use of medical imagery, she illustrates how violence affects us all.

Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'Photo Finished 2020' exhibition. Daily. The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Photo Finished 2020, at the Community Development Building, the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Nine students from Carson High School’s Advanced Photography program have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public through March 26, 2020, Mondays - Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. The Carson High students include Jackie Garza, Ansley Griffin, Karla Herrera, Meagan Kiesow, Kayee Konze, Kailee Luschar, Vanessa Martinez, Haley Trost, and Valerie Wamsley. The artists are all students in Kara Ferrin’s Advanced Photography class.

— Open studio basic painting at the Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 449 W. King Street. Students will work on their own paintings from subject matter they have chosen. The instructor, Mark Tompkins, will work one-on-one with each student to help them complete their project from start to finish. Each student must supply their own materials. Students may choose to paint in either water colors, oils, or acrylic paints.

History of Nevada's Civilian Conservation Corps the topic at Carson City Democratic luncheon. 11:30 a.m. Historian and author Ken Beaton will be the featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon. He will narrate a slide show of photographs showing what happened in Nevada after newly-inaugurated President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 6101 creating the Civilian Conservation Corps on April 5, 1933. This is an inspirational story of hard work, strict discipline and family loyalty that remains relevant today. A native of Lynn, Massachusetts, Ken Beaton is a retired Nevada secondary school teacher. The Nevada Appeal has published over a hundred of his commentaries, including a recent one on this topic, and many of his history articles have been published in Nevada magazine and other regional publications. This event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 16, at the Carson City Round Table, 3325 Retail Drive just off College Parkway. An all-you-can-eat pizza and salad bar lunch buffet is available for $7.99, 10% discount for seniors if requested. Water is free, extra charge for fountain drinks. Suggested donations of $5 or more gratefully accepted but are not required. All are welcome. Free Kid’s Inline Hockey Clinics begin Monday at Marv Teixeira Pavilion. 5:30 p.m. The Sierra Inline Hockey League will be hosting three free inline hockey clinics for active kids Monday March 16 and 23. Session times run from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., for ages 6 - 9 years old. The clinics will be held at the Marv Teixeira Pavilion in Mills Park, located at 1111 E. William Street in Carson City. Some equipment will be available to borrow, but please bring any equipment such as pads, skates, hockey sticks, helmets and clothing you have for your child. Carson City’s former Board of Supervisor and business owner Stan Jones was posthumously awarded Thursday the Historic Preservation Award for his long time work for downtown Carson City.

Each year, a Historic Preservation Award is awarded by the Historic Resources Commission to Carson City residents or organizations who have gone above and beyond in their dedication to historic preservation.

The Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is today, Thursday, May 2 at the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City. The memorial brings hundreds to the capitol grounds. The ceremony begins at 1 p.m.

More than 48 Carson High School Future Business Leaders of America students attended the state conference in Sparks, Nev. this past week. In total, 38 of those students earned 74 “Top-10” placements in 30 separate events. Additionally, three CHS FBLA students took state with first-place finishes and 15 of them qualified for the National Business Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. this coming June.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in identifying a man and woman associated to a vehicle stolen out of Reno last month.

Green Our Planet will host the second annual Northern Nevada Giant Student Farmers Market on Wednesday, May 15 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fuji Park on The Park Grass in Carson City. The Northern Nevada Giant Student Farmers Market will feature approximately 10 schools throughout the northern part of the Silver State.

Miller Counseling and Wellness Center began partnering with Douglas Center for Hope and Healing to offer grief support groups for adults in Carson City in 2024. There has been an amazing turnout, and the group appears to be filling a much-needed void in services to our community.
