Periodically, the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation recognizes individuals, organizations, and businesses for having made notable contributions to our community and for their support of the Foundation’s and Carson City Parks Department’s missions by selecting them to receive a Community Award. FCCPR’s Board of Directors recently selected Friends of Silver Saddle and Cinderlite Trucking Corporation and Materials (Cinderlite) for this year’s Community Awards.

Heading into the first of the work week, there's some uncertainty due to concerns over the coronavirus. Some activities will go on as scheduled while others may be canceled. We're advising you check with event organizers ahead of time before you plan on attending.

Heading into the middle of the work work, activities around town include a yoga class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, a midweek meditation series offered at Carson City Yoga, conversational Spanish classes at Partnership Carson City, Salsa dancing at Yaple's Ballroom, a presentation of "Valiant Women of The Vote" Mix and Mingle honoring the 19th Amendment at the Governor's Mansion, Ladies Night at Bella Vita Bistro, country and pop dancing at Carson Lanes, a safety workshop for women and much more. Did you make a New Year’s Resolution to learn more about our community and its cultural heritage? We hope you did, but if you didn’t, it’s never too late. The Parks Foundation is saddened to learn of the passing earlier this week of Sandy Osheroff, the Foundation’s longtime Treasurer.

Parks Foundation president, David Johnson, announced on Friday that the Foundation’s Board of Directors, continuing the Foundation’s practice of recognizing outstanding contributions in furtherance of Carson City’s parks, recreational facilities and open space, designated Sandy Osheroff as the “2020 Volunteer of the Years” at their December meeting.

The year is nearly over and winter is upon us; avoid an early onset of cabin fever, and stretch your legs by coming out to the Wungnema House for the last open house of 2019 on Sunday, Dec. 29 and learn about some of unique and enduring contributions a family of Native Americans made to our area. Access to the Wungnema House is off Saliman Road, opposite Carson High School.

Heading into the weekend, post-Christmas holiday activities continue around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include a Christmas Through the Years presentation at the Carson Valley Community Theater, Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop, musicians Lauren Kepler and Dan Cypher at Bella Vita Bistro, laughs at the Carson Comedy Club and much more!

As Carson City’s disc golf complex nears completion, the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation’s president, David Johnson, announced that the Foundation recently received a generous donation from the Nevada Division of the National Pony Express Association, for the sponsorship of a hole at the Carson Ridge Disc Golf Park.

Money begets money. And, that statement is true when it comes to the Carson City Parks & Recreation Foundation.

Recently, the Foundation was the recipient of a $20,000 matching grant from the Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation to continue to refresh the Bob Boldrick Theater lobby within the community center that started in February allowing then Chamber Chairman of the Board Bob Fredlund to present the Foundation with a check for $20,300.

The Wungnema House is the charming stone cottage located on the east side of Mills Park across from Carson High. It was built by a family of skilled Hopi stonemasons shortly after WWII and served as the family’s home until the early 1970s.

The Nevada Outdoor Experience is co-sponsored by the Wild Sheep Foundation and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. The goal of the free event is to excite and inspire the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts.

As we head into the middle of the month many of us haven't turned on the air conditioner because the weather outside has been comfortably, pleasantly air conditioned these past few weeks. And now with valley rain, wind and Sierra snow on the way, we tip our hat to one Carson Now reader, LaNair, who pledged he wouldn't turn on their heater these next few days because, well, it is May after all.
