Senator Square: There’s always next year
Students competed Feb. 17 at the Thompson Federal Courthouse in Reno, Nevada in the Northern Nevada Regional Mock Trial Competition. All schools were given the same case construct and asked to create their own take on it, presenting it as an attorney and a witness would in a real court case.
Alexandrea Watson, Sophia Peterson, and Victoria Soriano did a wonderful job of representing CHS as attorneys, and Keefe Warren, Aidyn Ohl, Nayeli Cervantes, Ashley Harris, and Skylar Olshefski represented CHS as witnesses. Students left the competition feeling excited and optimistic about their chances for making it to state next year, but this year they were happy to compete and see what Mock Trial is all about.
Like the unpredictable events of life, these brave and talented students took what they were given, and did what they had to do to win their constructed case. Other schools present included Reno High School, Galena, Wooster, Elko, Spanish Springs, and McQueen.
Mock Trial advisor Sara R. Davis is a Chemistry and Geoscience teacher at Carson High School. Davis quotes physicist and chemist Marie Curie when referring to CHS’ Mock Trial student participants: "Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood and now is the time to understand more so that we may fear less." Assemblyman visits Carson High School
On Mar.1, Assemblyman Edgar Flores spoke with 100 Carson and Pioneer juniors and seniors with a nonpartisan and motivational message for students who find themselves struggling with school, family situations, or both, and he took questions at the end of his presentation. Flores traced the hard work of his parents to provide for him as a child and drew a parallel to each student’s own life to make meaning of the importance of staying in school and graduating. In addition, he encouraged kids to focus on their own growth as individuals and not be discouraged by comparing themselves to others because everyone faces unique challenges in life.

Senior Project Judges Needed
All CHS seniors must complete the Senior Project. Students choose to research an area of interest, develop a product or project, compile a portfolio, and give a formal presentation of their project to a panel of judges. CHS invites the Carson City community to partner with these students through volunteering to judge and serve on panels consisting of 3-5 students.
Carson High School relies on community volunteers to make this a success, and SP presentations this year will be held April 24. If interested, please go online to carsonhigh.com, and find the Senior Project link or call or email Media Clerk and Senior Project Coordinator Lavon Sollberger at 775-283-1640 or lsollberger@carson.k12.nv.us.

Student of the Week
Maddison Matthews is a great addition to CHS and this week’s Student of the Week. She is a very fun student who is mature beyond her years. By coming out of her shell, Maddison is becoming a complete, happy, and cheerful young woman. Everyone who knows Maddison can see her joy, and they are so glad to have her in class.
Senior Spotlight
The Senior in the Spotlight this week is Nicholas Tibma. As a student at CHS, he has maintained excellent grades during his freshman, sophomore, junior and the first semester of his senior year. He has taken numbers of Honors and Advanced Placement classes, while maintaining an excellent weighted GPA of 4.62.
Nick has been involved in The National Honor Society (NHS), the America’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students; interestingly, this society is substantially more than just an honor roll as NHS serves to recognize students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character, traits in which Nicholas Timba excels.
Nick is also a member of SkillsUSA and the Philosophy Club here on the CHS campus. He plans to attend the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, majoring in Aerospace Engineering. Once Nick graduates from college, he intends to enlist in the United States Armed Services. Nick states that “I’m a nerd, but the ladies love it.” CHS knows that Nick will be successful in all his future endeavors.
