Nevada Neighbors series with Tom di Maria featured Tuesday
The Capital City Arts Initiative, CCAI, will present a talk by Tom di Maria, Director of the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, Calif., this Tuesday, Sept. 13.
His illustrated talk, "Outside In", is next in CCAI’s Nevada Neighbors series. The talk will take place at 7pm at the Community Development building [the Brick], 108 E Proctor St, Carson City. There will be an informal reception for di Maria preceding the event at 6:15pm. The presentation and reception are free, and the public is cordially invited.
Tom di Maria has served as Director of Creative Growth Art Center since 2000. The oldest and largest art center of its kind, CGAC engages 154 adult artists with disabilities in 74 ongoing workshops led by trained professional artists in a range of media, including painting, drawing, print making, woodworking, ceramics, textiles, and video production.
Founded in 1974, CGAC maintains a well-established reputation as a vital contemporary art center and gallery by encouraging the highest level of achievement and recognition for its artists with disabilities. Today, CGAC artists thrive in the mainstream art world, and its groundbreaking model has fostered the development of over 20 similar organizations around the world.
Di Maria has developed partnerships with museums, galleries, and international design companies to help bring Creative Growth's artists with disabilities fully into the contemporary art world.
The term “Outsider Art” has gained increased attention in the art world. Often used to describe the work of self-taught or non-academically trained artists, the term is both a stigma and a banner. Its history goes back to the French term art brut, first used to describe a growing body of artistic work from the mid-20th century, but its meaning has greatly evolved since then.
Di Maria’s Nevada Neighbors talk will provide a short overview of the history of the genre, and will also focus on artists with disabilities from CGAC including the work of artist Judith Scott, a sculptor whose work has been widely exhibited in venues ranging from the Outsider Art Fair to the Brooklyn Museum.
Di Maria speaks around the world about the Center’s major artists and their relationship to both Outsider Art and contemporary culture. Prior to this position, he served as Assistant Director of the Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive at UC Berkeley. He received his MFA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art, in Baltimore.
As part of his CCAI visit, di Maria will give his talk to art students and faculty at Douglas High School and at Sierra Nevada College.
