The Nevada State Museum, Carson City offers a slate of in-person and online programs in January, ranging from online family projects to historical lectures. The offerings fall under four different programs: Family Fun Saturday and the Francis Humphrey Lecture Series, both occurring online, as well as Coin Press No. 1 demonstrations and Curator’s Corner programming, both available in-person at the museum. Events are as follows:

Learn what Nevada women of the late 19th century were carrying under those Victorian era gowns Wednesday (Oct. 7) at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St. in Carson City.

CARSON CITY — Nevada First Lady Kathy Sisolak continued what has become a tradition in Nevada on Wednesday by donating the gown she wore at her husband’s inaugural ball to the Nevada State Museum.

On Wednesday, Nov. 6, the Capital City Arts Initiative will present a public talk, "Nevada’s Ancient Rock Art: Art for All Times" by archeologist Pat Barker, Ph.D. The event is part of CCAI’s ongoing Nevada Neighbors speakers’ series.

Artists from Carson City, Minden and Gardnerville will be featured at the 25th annual Northern Nevada Artisan Show and Sale this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-2 in Reno.

The event’s 25th anniversary will be dedicated to the memory of Jim McCormick, UNR Art Department chair, artist, curator and one of the founders of the show. Admission is free.

The Carson City Fair is returning for its third year this month, and it’s bringing big changes and several new events to its roster including a demolition derby, American Ninja Farmer contests, jello eating contests, animal auctions, and more.

Carson City’s own Miles Construction has set itself apart in its field of being at the forefront of Nevada’s future industries, as well as preserving the buildings with historic significance to our community.

Miles Construction has been around since 1986, and recently has been behind many of the projects making the news time and again for both innovation and preservation.

Art doll maker Christine Shively-Benjamin of Carson City will be among more than 30 artists from Northern Nevada featured at the 24th annual Artisan Show and Sale Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Reno. Admission is free and at least 20 pieces of original art will be given away.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension presents the 2018 Carson City Fair July 25-29. The event, held at Fuji Park, 601 Old Clear Creek Road in Carson City, is put on in partnership with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), the Northern Nevada Antique Tractor and Engine Club, and others to celebrate youth and agriculture.

CARSON CITY — Long before “public art” became a thing, and, heck, long before Nevada became Nevada, people were making rock art. For more than 10,000 years, people have been creating rock art in Nevada and some Native Americans continue to make it today.

You may have noticed a few blue porch lights in your neighborhood; it’s a way to offer support for our local law enforcement officers. Today, those who have lost their lives in the line of duty will be honored at the Law Enforcement Memorial on the Nevada Capitol grounds with a ceremony, presentation of the colors, and taps.

The first day of the week marks the end of a season for Youth Theater Carson City. The year featured shows like Singing in the Rain, Jr. and Willy Wonka, Jr, and last summer’s Into the Dark, not to mention performances at Disneyland by their elite troupe: the Showstoppers. Well, so much for spring. Stay warm today as the wind whips into town. It’s National Library Week, and the Carson City Library isn’t shirking its duties with the Lego Club, Story time, and a sewing class in its Makerspace all happening today. They have also brought in renown speaker, author, and innovator Milton Chen to lead a panel discussion on education inside of the Brewery Arts Center’s Performance Hall.

CARSON CITY — Like other masters of the arts world, the creations of the famous Native American basket maker Datsolalee, are timeless. Ninety-three years after her death in Carson City, Datsolalee is widely regarded as one of the most innovative, important and famous basket makers in the world.

A new week begins and brings us one day closer to warm weather. Karaoke night at the Fox Brewpub is an all-ages, family-friendly event, but all-day happy hour inside the Fox’ Den is meant just for the adults. Local theatre group, the Proscenium Players, have a few great productions coming these next few months; their monthly meeting is this evening at the Brewery Arts Center and anyone interested in theater or wanting to get involved is welcome to attend. Swing into the night with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club at Carson Lanes.

I really can’t keep up with the changing weather reports around here. I think we are expecting snow, so you’ll want to be ready for anything. Our County Clerk’s office is holding an open house to show off the new voting machines we’ll be using for this year’s elections.

CARSON CITY — As settlers found their way west in the 1800s, so, too, did much of the fashion of the time, including the beautiful and elaborate gowns of the Victorian era. Modern-day observers see the clothing and can’t help but wonder ”Why did they dress like that?”

Art doll maker Christine Shively-Benjamin of Carson City will be among thirty artists from Northern Nevada featured at the 23th annual Reno Artisan Show and Sale Nov. 3 and 4 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Admission is free and 20 pieces of original art will be given away.

“Every year we invite some of the best artists in Northern Nevada to exhibit at our show,” says chairperson Julie Sulahria. “It’s always held on the first weekend in November as an opportunity to purchase creative gifts before the holidays.

An interior designer, Tricia Lincoln has a natural draw to the arts. The Fashion Film Festival on Friday piqued her interest, and gave her a reason to break out a new dress.

There’s no need to travel to the Big Apple to celebrate New York Fashion Week. Fashionistas can walk the red carpet at The Nevada State Museum as part of a three-week film festival organized by Mark Salinas, the city’s arts and culture coordinator.

An interesting and engaging lecture about our most intimate attire, underwear, will be featured at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City on Thursday, Jan. 26 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The final push is on to recognize local gallery, Artsy Fartsy, in a national competition. The national business movement Independent We Stand has declared Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery in Carson City among the quarter finalists for the 2016 Independent We Stand Small Business of the Year Award. Only 25 small businesses across America have made it to this round.

More than thirty artists from Northern Nevada including Reno, Carson City and Sparks — several nationally known-— will be featured at the 22th annual Reno Artisan Show and Sale Nov. 4 and 5 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Admission is free and 25 pieces of original art will be given away.

The Capital City Arts Initiative, CCAI, will present a talk by Tom di Maria, Director of the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, Calif., this Tuesday, Sept. 13.

His illustrated talk, "Outside In", is next in CCAI’s Nevada Neighbors series. The talk will take place at 7pm at the Community Development building [the Brick], 108 E Proctor St, Carson City. There will be an informal reception for di Maria preceding the event at 6:15pm. The presentation and reception are free, and the public is cordially invited.
