Nevada Humane Society Carson City Center Grand Opening set for this weekend
Lifesaving for homeless pets in Carson City is about to reach a new beginning. A brand new animal shelter is opening, with a special Open House this Saturday and Sunday.
The new animal shelter broke ground in October 2015 and replaces the current shelter on Butti Way, which was built in the 1960’s. The facility, named Nevada Humane Society Carson City Center, will include Maddie’s Adoption Center, a veterinary clinic, licensing, lost and found pet housing and more.
The new shelter is located at 549 Airport Road. The Open House will kick off with a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with pet adoptions, giveaways, tours, special guests and more. Festivities continue Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6:30p.m.
Funding for Nevada Humane Society Carson City Center came from revenue from a 1/8 percent sales tax, donations from Nevada Humane Society and Carson Animal Services Initiative, or CASI, whose mission has been to raise money to help Carson City build and equip a safe and inviting animal shelter to help the animals in need find good, loving homes.
CASI is also designing an exercise play yard that will soon be installed and will help offer enrichment to dogs during their stay at the shelter.
A large portion of funding also came from two organizations who have consistently supported Nevada Humane Society in all of their lifesaving efforts. Maddie's Fund, a national family foundation, awarded $383,000 to Nevada Humane Society to outfit the new Carson City shelter, which will aid in the lifesaving mission and allow them to adequately provide for the community.
The Petco Foundation contributed $100,000, which will be used to care for adoptable dogs, providing them with indoor/outdoor housing and more.
“Thanks to all of the generous donors and the support of the community, more animals in Northern Nevada will now find homes and be provided the care they deserve. Our homeless pets in Carson City will be able to receive on-site veterinary care as well as benefit from innovative adoption and foster care programs,” said Kiska Icard, CEO for Nevada Humane Society. “In addition, low-income families will be able to receive spay and neuter surgeries for their pets, reducing the number of animals at risk for being given up.”
Nevada Humane Society is a 501c3 non-profit organization and the only open-admission, no-kill shelter in the state of Nevada. In 2014, they took over management of Carson City Animal Control with the goal to transform Nevada's capital city into the state's second metropolitan area to become a no-kill community, where all healthy, treatable, and rehabilitatable animals are saved. Almost immediately, lifesaving increased from 55% to 95%. The increased capacity with this new facility will allow for even more animals to be adopted into loving homes.
