Justice of the Peace Candidate Forum tonight in Carson City
A forum for candidates vying for the position of Justice of the Peace is being held tonight, Wednesday May 15 in Carson City.
Candidates Melanie Burketta, Tyson League and Daniel Spence will answer questions moderated by Western Nevada College President Dr. Kyle Dalpe.
The vacancy is due to the current Justice of the Peace, Judge Kristen Luis, being appointed by Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo to the first district court seat following the retirement of Judge James Wilson.
The forum takes place from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson Nugget, located at 507 N. Carson Street. This event is free to the public and is hosted by Carson City Republican Women.
About the candidates
Melanie Burketta is an attorney and Carson City resident who graduated Carson High School before receiving her undergraduate at the University of Nevada, Reno, followed by receiving her law degree at the Gonzaga School of Law. She has practiced criminal and civil law during her career, and has served as a prosecutor and Chief Deputy of the Civil Division for the District Attorney’s Office.

Tyson League is a Carson City resident who currently serves as a Supervising Deputy District Attorney in Carson City. He earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Chapman University, before earning his law degree from Whittier Law School. He has worked for the DA’s office since 2014.
Daniel Spence is a Carson City resident and Carson High School graduate. He received his undergraduate from the University of Nevada, Reno and his law degree from Barry Law School. He operates a private practice in Carson City.
