Summer youth activities in Carson City feature reading challenge, camps and more

Summer is in full swing, and recreational activities around Carson City are starting to return in the near future.

From the Carson City Library’s 2020 Learning Challenge, to archery classes at the Clear Creek Bowman Archery Camp, there are several ways for youth to get outside and enjoy the Silver State.

Below is a list of activities, classes and recreational facilities reopening around town. More events and programs will be added as more information becomes available.

Carson City Library Learning Challenge

From June 13 to July 31, the Carson City Library is hosting its 2020 Summer Learning Challenge for kids of all ages. In this challenge, participants complete a certain number of virtual programs, activities and reading, depending on their age. Prizes are earned for registration and completion, and participants track all their reading time in a simple app. Everyone who registers will be eligible to receive a special take-home kit, with fun activities to log with their reading.

Grand Prize raffle winners will be chosen via online drawing and awarded by age group: 0-5, 6-11, 12-17 and 18 or older. The more virtual programs attended, activities completed and hours read, the more raffle tickets earned. All time tracking and ticket collection is done via an online app called Beanstack.

Last summer, 540 participants read more than 4,600 hours. The Carson City Library is looking to top last year’s number and it is a fun activity for kids to learn along the way. For more information, visit the link herehere.

Drive-In Theater Showings at the Brewery Arts Center
The Brewery Arts Center will be hosting five free drive-in movie theater showings at the BAC Outdoor Amphitheater. From July through August, several different movies will be available to watch for families and kids of all ages.

Girl Scouts of Sierra Nevada Virtual Camp-In Camp Out
Girl Scouts of Sierra Nevada have offered a safe and affordable summer experience for all girls K-12. From July 12-16, Camp Wasiu II’s Virtual Camp-In Camp Out gives girls an opportunity to learn engaging science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) activities.

Participants of Camp Wasiu II’s Virtual Camp-In Camp Out will experience campfires, a cookout, games, songs, arts and crafts. Participants will also socialize during the virtual group meet-ups.

In addition to the fun and recreational aspects of summer camp, all activities are designed using contemporary Girl Scout programming: The Girls Scout Leadership Experience. This approach gives girls the opportunity to develop leadership skills, including finding their voice for positive action, and teamwork.

Participants will need a personal computer or tablet of some kind and an internet connection. The registration deadline is Thursday, June 25, and the cost is $25 per person.

The sign up link for the virtual camp out can be found here.

Picnics and park gatherings with groups of less than 50 people are allowed. The outdoor tennis court and Mills Park skatepark located by the Carson City Community Center has reopened to the public.

More recreational activities including fitness classes and drivers education courses are expected to open back up in the near future.

Recreational Sports Leagues

The 2020 Fall Scooter and Skateboard Competitions hosted by The Wheel House is still scheduled for Sept. 19 at the Mills Park Skate Park.

There is a possibility more sports leagues under the Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will reopen when larger gatherings are allowed. For now, the department is waiting on further direction and guidance from the state to reopen sports leagues.
