Registration continues now through Friday, June 17 for those wanting to participate in this summer's Junior Giants, a free, non-competitive and coed baseball program for Carson City youth ages 5-13.

As the 2020-21 school year continues, the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada is packed with learning programs and exciting activities for kids of all ages.

The Carson City location at 1870 Russell Way is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with dozens of hands-on programs. Spots inside the building are limited to 135 kids each day, but countless activities will be held throughout the year.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held on Thursday, Sept. 17 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

Items for discussion include new shade structures in the downtown area, grant funding for fuel reduction, surplus city funding, and more.

United Federal Credit Union is excited to announce a new two-year partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada. As part of the partnership, United donated $4,000 to the Club and has pledged to donate another $4,000 in 2021.

Fifteen Carson City non-profits were awarded nearly $800,000 in COVID-19 relief funding via the CARES act during the Board of Supervisor's meeting held Thursday.

The State of Nevada through the CARES Act has allocated over $10 million in Coronavirus Relief Funds “CRF” to Carson City. Carson City’s Preliminary Plan of Expenditure allocated $1 million to be awarded to non-profit organizations located in Carson City.

Summer is in full swing, and recreational activities around Carson City are starting to return in the near future.

From the Carson City Library’s 2020 Learning Challenge, to archery classes at the Clear Creek Bowman Archery Camp, there are several ways for youth to get outside and enjoy the Silver State.

The Carson City School District wants to offer a big “Thank You” to all the men and women working in nutrition services. These dedicated individuals have been working non-stop to provide meals to the children in need of Carson City.

The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada announced that it will be continuing with its 10-week summer program, providing a space for school-aged children during the summer months.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will take place Thursday May 7 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center located at 851 E. William Street.

Nutrition Services with the Carson City School District have added two more drive-through pick-up locations for free lunch and breakfast, including the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada and the Ron Wood Family Resource Center.

Due to increasing concern around COVID-19, Nevada Gov. Sisolak, after consulting with local and state agencies and officials, has decided all school in Nevada will be closed starting Monday, March 16, through Friday, April 3. With this direction, All Carson City School District schools will be closed for three weeks starting Monday, March 16.

As some of you may already know, Governor Sisolak today in a press conference ordered the closure of all Nevada K-12 schools until April 6. We will be following the guidance of our state government and closing our doors for the same time period to protect our Club members and our community.

On Thursday morning, the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada was presented with a donation of $1,500 by the Nevada Artist’s Association to help with the cost of art programs at the club.

Due to weather related transportation challenges and safety issues, all afterschool programs at schools in the Carson City School District will be canceled today, Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020. No student activities or programs will occur. This includes after school programs.

The Carson City Elks Lodge is hosting the annual Hoop Shoot event for Carson City Youth, ages 8 through 13 on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019, at the Multi-Purpose Athletic Facility, also known as the MAC, 1860 Russell Way in Carson City.

The 2019 Silver State Art Festival is the third annual gathering in Carson City of award-winning gourd artists, painters, photographers, wood, glass and metal artists and from all over the Southwest. The festival runs Sept. 13-15 at Fuji Exhibit Hall, Park & Pavilion in Carson City.

Members of the Nevada Gourd Society have a wonderful display of gourd art in the Carson City Library. The local group is known as the Great Basin Gourd Patch meet monthly in the Johnson Lane area to share and learn techniques used on gourds. The exhibit in the library will be on display until the end of August. You don’t want to miss all this art!

A Joint Operating Agreement is currently under review between the Carson City Library, the Northern Nevada Development Authority, and Adams Hub, to create and manage a “Business Retention and Expansion” program.

At the Board of Supervisor’s meeting on Aug. 1, a presentation was held to discuss a possible joint contract between the three entities, for the creation of a Business Retention and Expansion program, which would be funded by the Hop and Mae Adams Foundation.

The budget for the Community Support Services Grant was finalized at the most recent Carson City Board of Supervisor’s meeting, which allocated nearly $400,000 of grant funding for various programs helping our local communities such as helping homebound seniors, dental care for local youth, emergency shelter for domestic violence victims and more.

The Journey of Hope North team arrive in Carson City as part of a 4,370-mile summer-long journey from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. on Saturday, August 10. The team will dedicate their summer to supporting people with disabilities through grant funding and community engagement. This group of 22 cyclists and six crew members is one of three Journey of Hope teams cycling across the country. This event, organized by The Ability Experience, is now in its 32nd year.

What a week it was Carson City, and it isn't even over yet. Heading into Friday, May 3, 2019, we're looking at continued sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s. There's a host of activities Friday and, looking ahead, a bevy of fun Saturday including a Mother's Day craft fair at the Carson City Community Center, a Star Wars themed bicycle safety day, a wine, cheese and dessert ride aboard the V&T, an early opening of the downtown farmer's market, the May Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, a memorial walk, presentations, comedy, live music and more. The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada is set to host one of their largest fundraisers of the year this Saturday, May 4, for its 11th year. Kentucky Derby Days 2019 will kick off at the Martin Hotel and Basque Restaurant, located at 308 N. Curry Street, at 2:30 p.m. and will run until 6 p.m.

All proceeds of the event will go to the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada, located in Carson City.

Along with Sexual Assault Awareness & Child Abuse Prevention Month recognized through April, Wednesday, April 24 is the 20th anniversary of Denim Day.

For 20 years, the organization Peace Over Violence has organized Denim Day, a rape prevention education campaign, during which community members, elected officials, businesses, and students are encouraged to make a social statement with their fashion choices on this day by wearing jeans as a visible means of protest against misconceptions that surround sexual assault.

The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada, through partnering with Arts for Children of Nevada, came up with a mosaic art program that allowed both youth and teens to create, paint and design their own permanent mural.

Soroptimist International of Carson City has partnered with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada, to ensure every child in foster care receives an Easter basket this year.
