Happy Sunday, Carson City! But it's not the end of the weekend yet, at least not for some, thanks to Veteran's Day Weekend. Here are the events left for the rest of the weekend!

Sunday, November 10

The United States Marine Corps celebrates its Birthday on Sunday. The U.S. Marine Corps was formed as a security force of sorts, serving as an infantry unit aboard naval vessels and was responsible for protecting the ship's officers. Sometimes this was evident with the Marine's quarters positioned between the Officer's quarters and the rest of the ship - to serve as a buffer between them and the rest of the crew.

Nevada Humane Society in Carson City to waive adoption fees for cats, kittens this weekend (all day). 549 Airport Rd. Are you looking for a cat? What a coincidence: we have about 400 cats here at our shelter who are looking for you! To help our cats find homes, we are waiving the adoption fees on all cats and kittens at the shelters in Carson City and Reno this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8-10.When our shelter becomes full, it limits our ability to help other cats in need throughout Nevada. This means, we need you. But more importantly, our cats need you.

Muscle Powered Sunday Bicycle Ride. 9 a.m. Meet at Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Rd, Carson City, NV 89701, in the south parking lot, next to the Linear Ditch Trail. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City.

Edible Art with Chef Pete in Virginia City. 1 to 3 p.m. at St. Mary’s Art Center, 55 North R Street. Learn the art of creating delicious desserts fit for the upcoming holiday celebrations. Executive Pastry Chef Pete Paulos teaches students how to create beautiful and heartwarming poached pear tarts. Students get to take home their own creations to share (or not) during the holiday season.

Dayton Chamber Veterans Appreciation Dinner features former Senator Dean Heller. 5 p.m. at the Dayton Valley Golf Club, 101 Palmer Dr. Mike Kunz and Stephen Hipp, co-chairmen of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce Veterans Dinner and members of the chamber board of directors, announced today that former United States Senator Dean Heller will be the featured speaker at the Chamber's third annual Veterans Dinner.

Monday, November 11 (Veterans Day)

Casino Fandango in Carson City offers a free buffet on Monday for veterans and active duty military. The buffet runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Grand Ballroom. Go here for more information.

Free breakfast for veterans by Carson Nugget. Veterans who sign up for Veterans Club one free American breakfast at the Eatery on Veteran's Day between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sign up and receive vouchers at the casino's Winner's Club.

— The Fox Brewpub in Carson City offers veterans a free burger and beer on the house, al day Veterans Day. Members of the military are asked to present to their server their military ID, veterans hat, or proof of enlistment in the U.S. Armed Forces. Go here for more information.

— Free Spaghetti Lunch for Veterans and Active Military at the Carson Valley Inn, Minden. Free spaghetti lunch for all veterans and active military – plus one guest – on Monday in the Valley Ballroom from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Veterans and active military personnel simply present your military ID for entrance and lunch for you and your guest is on the Carson Valley Inn. Reno
There will be a Veterans Day Parade in Reno along Virginia Street, Monday, Nov. 11, from 11 a.m. to noon. In northern Nevada, Reno is hosting its annual Veterans Day Parade on November 11, 2019. This year’s theme commemorates the centennial of Veterans Day, formally Armistice Day. NDVS will be participating in the parade again this year. Come and join us!

Sparks
There will be a Veterans Day ceremony and Imo Jima Reenactment at the Sparks Marina on Monday morning. Please join us on November 11, 2019 as we celebrate Veterans Day with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza and Iwo Jima reenactment. South Lake Tahoe

American Legion Post 795 hosts Veterans Day ceremony.

American Legion Post 795 of South Lake Tahoe invites residents and visitors to join members of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion in honoring all veterans this Veterans Day. The Veterans Day ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, 2019, at the American Legion Hall, 2748 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe. Light refreshments will be served.

Formerly Armistice Day, November 11 commemorates the anniversary of the peace agreement that ended World War I in 1918. It is historically significant that this day continue to be observed on the eleventh hour of the eleventh month of the eleventh day to commemorate when the guns fell silent at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918.

“Happy Homestead, is the final resting place for more than 560 veterans and each year our local veteran’s group, Vets in Counseling, places American flags on their gravesites to honor them on Veterans Day. Happy Homestead is located at 1261 Johnson Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

UPDATE THURSDAY: The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two people who died Wednesday morning following the two vehicle crash on I-580 in Carson City. They are Alejandra Hernandez Valtierra, 36, and Viola Santoyo Huizar, 48, both of Carson City.

UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Dayton Elementary School in Lyon County was honored Wednesday along 13 other schools including Carson High in Carson City as a Nevada Purple Star School.

Schools receiving the designation have committed to supporting the educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families.

Junior Park Ranger Day is back this Saturday, April 27 at Riverview Park in Carson City.

Junior Park Ranger Day is an annual event dedicated to help kids complete their Junior Ranger Adventure Guides and be sworn in all in one day.

Carson City School District hosted a ceremony Wednesday morning with local dignitaries from the Nevada Department of Education and officers from local military bases. Carson High School was honored with a Nevada Purple Star School designation for supporting military-connected students and their families.

A 37-year-old man was arrested for suspicion of obstruction, trespassing and felony sex offender failing to register, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Laura Ricks, TOSA/Instructional Coach at Empire Elementary School, was honored as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year, at the Tuesday, April 23, school board meeting and annual event.

Additionally, Sandra Guzzetta, special education paraprofessional at Bordewich Bray Elementary School, was recognized as the Education Support Professional Employee of the Year, and Chelise Crookshanks, principal at Mark Twain Elementary School, was recognized as the district’s Administrator of the Year.

Tickets are now available for this summer’s Capital City Brewfest. This year’s event takes place June 22 on Curry Street at McFadden Plaza in Carson City. More than two dozen brewers, as well as several food trucks, will line the street from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Plus there will be live music on the McFadden Plaza stage.
