Join us in celebrating Veterans Day 2020. Due to most Veterans Day parades and other celebrations being cancelled this November because of COVID-19, Nevada Department of Veterans Services produced a video with support from the Nevada veterans and community leaders across the state highlighting what Veterans Day means to them, along with the following anniversaries:

— The 75th anniversary of the end of WWII;
— The 70th anniversary of the outbreak of Korean War;
— The 67th anniversary of the alliance between U.S.A. and the Republic of Korea; and
— The 30th Anniversary of the outbreak of the 1st Gulf War.

Going into Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 it is Veterans Day. Federal, state and local government offices and schools are closed to observe the holiday. Thank you U.S. Veterans for your service to our great country. There are a number of organized happenings in the region, including parades in Virginia City and Reno, as well as events in South Lake Tahoe and Sparks. Plus a number of Carson City and Carson Valley restaurants are offering no cost meals as a gesture of gratitude to veterans and active duty military members. Also Monday is a discussion on homeless issues with local advocate and champion for those who are often without a voice, Dee Dee Foremaster.

Happy Sunday, Carson City! But it's not the end of the weekend yet, at least not for some, thanks to Veteran's Day Weekend. Here are the events left for the rest of the weekend!

Honoring those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, Veteran's Day is Monday, Nov. 11 with a number of events happening around the capital city and Northern Nevada which began this week and will continue through Tuesday.

Heading into the Veterans Day weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next four days. Events include live comedy, art and heater, multiple holiday craft fairs around Carson City and Carson Valley as well as several Veterans Day ceremonies and offers of gratitude to vets and active duty members of the U.S. military on Monday. The Nevada Department of Veterans Services is pleased to announce Director Kat Miller has been selected to serve as Grand Marshal in the 2017 City of Reno Veterans Day Parade. Brigadier General Zachary Doser has been chosen to serve as Deputy Grand Marshal in the November 11th event honoring veterans and those currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Now is your chance to get involved, have some fun and make a difference. The Nevada Department of Veterans Services is hosting a free, two day workshop to help you become certified as a Nevada Veterans Advocate or NVA.

There are new Department of Defense (DoD) guidelines on sexual orientation, however, many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, and questioning (LGBTQ) veterans may not be aware these changes may benefit them. If they were discharged with a less-than-honorable discharge based on their sexual orientation, they may be eligible for a discharge upgrade.

On Friday, Sept. 22, 2017 the remains of 27 veterans will finally receive the military burial and honor they were promised through their service in the U.S. Armed Forces. The service will be held beginning at 2 p.m. at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Cemetery, located at 14 Veterans Way, in Fernley, Nev. The public is invited to attend.

The wait for northern Nevada veterans is finally over. On Monday, July 17, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., there will be Groundbreaking Ceremony to celebrate the construction of the new Northern Nevada State Veterans Home. The event will be held on the site of the new facility, 2 Kietzke Lane, Sparks, NV, which is located across from the DMV.

Reno, NV – The state’s Veterans Coordinator is organizing a State of Nevada Career Fair which features employment opportunities and other resource information for Nevada Veterans, June 22, in Reno. Attendees will benefit from meeting representatives from the following state agencies to learn about jobs available and benefits of working in Nevada State Government:

The public is invited to attend two Memorial Day events at the Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery located in Fernley, Nev.

The first is on Saturday, May 27, 2017 with a "Flag-In" event. Volunteers are asked to arrive no later than 8:30 AM to assist in placing an American flag on each gravesite. Participants will receive a free commemorative WW1 pin to show appreciation in preparing the cemetery for the main Memorial Day ceremony.

Gov. Brian Sandoval and the Nevada Department of Veterans Services are pleased to announce Reno's Veterans Guest House is this month's "Veteran Supporter of the Month." The award and recognition were given to the non-profit at a ceremony Tuesday at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Reno's Veterans Guest House is considered a "Home Away from Home" for U.S. military veterans and their families. The only facility of its kind in the country, the Guest House provides temporary, overnight lodging for veterans or military members while they are undergoing treatment at any medical facility in the Reno-Sparks area.

(Reno and Las Vegas, NV)—The Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NDVS) has named Fred Wagar its new Deputy Director of Programs and Services. Wagar brings vast experience in connecting veterans to services and benefits with strong background and expertise in helping disabled veterans.

The Nevada Department of Veterans Services, in partnership with the Nevada Veterans Coalition, will host a "Remembrance Ceremony" at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, Nevada on Saturday, April 8 at 11 a.m.

The Nevada Department of Veterans Services NDVS will be recognizing and honoring veterans living at the Sierra Place Senior Living assisted care facility in Carson City.

CARSON CITY — During a ceremony at the Governor's Mansion, the Northern Nevada Patriot Guard Riders were honored as Nevada's Veteran Supporter of the Month for November.

South Lyon Medical Center is holding a special veterans recognition ceremony at its long-term care facility in Yerington to honor its military veteran residents, a hospital press release said.

“These soldiers were all children once…they stood in that first pair of shoes, released supports, leaned into the wind of unknowing, wobbled that first step toward war” (from “Listen” by Teresa Breeden).

Literary work by Breeden and other Nevada writers accompany photographs of the nearly 7,000 U.S military Iraq and Afghanistan war dead since Sept.11, 2001, part of the nationally touring arts and humanities exhibition “Always Lost: A Meditation on War.”

In 2009, Carson City poet Teresa Breeden wrote: “Listen. Douglas County is hosting the Western Nevada College “Always Lost: A Meditation on War” arts and humanities exhibition as part of a special Nevada Sesquicentennial tour sponsored by the Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NDVS). The exhibit will be on display at the Minden Inn August 25-September 12, 2014 and is free and open to the public. Viewing hours will be Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. with extended hours on Thursdays (August 28, Sept. 4 and Sept.

Douglas County is hosting the Western Nevada College “Always Lost: A Meditation on War” arts and humanities exhibition as part of a special Nevada Sesquicentennial tour sponsored by the Nevada Department of Veterans Services.

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles offers 21 different plates for veterans and family members. The plates can be viewed on the DMV veteran license plate page.

The campaign was launched to increase participation in the veterans plates and a portion of the purchase funds goes to the Veteran Gift Account. The gift account is used by the NDVS to fund veteran outreach efforts and programs throughout the state, which benefit veterans and family members.
