Nevada veterans honored this Veterans Day 2020 with video ceremony, proclamation

Join us in celebrating Veterans Day 2020. Due to most Veterans Day parades and other celebrations being cancelled this November because of COVID-19, Nevada Department of Veterans Services produced a video with support from the Nevada veterans and community leaders across the state highlighting what Veterans Day means to them, along with the following anniversaries:

— The 75th anniversary of the end of WWII;
— The 70th anniversary of the outbreak of Korean War;
— The 67th anniversary of the alliance between U.S.A. and the Republic of Korea; and
— The 30th Anniversary of the outbreak of the 1st Gulf War.

Events around the Carson City region for Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11

Going into Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 it is Veterans Day. Federal, state and local government offices and schools are closed to observe the holiday. Thank you U.S. Veterans for your service to our great country. There are a number of organized happenings in the region, including parades in Virginia City and Reno, as well as events in South Lake Tahoe and Sparks. Plus a number of Carson City and Carson Valley restaurants are offering no cost meals as a gesture of gratitude to veterans and active duty military members. Also Monday is a discussion on homeless issues with local advocate and champion for those who are often without a voice, Dee Dee Foremaster.

Nevada Department of Veterans Services Director Kat Miller selected Grand Marshal for City of Reno Veterans Day Parade

There are new Department of Defense (DoD) guidelines on sexual orientation, however, many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, and questioning (LGBTQ) veterans may not be aware these changes may benefit them. If they were discharged with a less-than-honorable discharge based on their sexual orientation, they may be eligible for a discharge upgrade.

Unclaimed remains of 27 veterans to receive a military funeral in Fernley

On Friday, Sept. 22, 2017 the remains of 27 veterans will finally receive the military burial and honor they were promised through their service in the U.S. Armed Forces. The service will be held beginning at 2 p.m. at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Cemetery, located at 14 Veterans Way, in Fernley, Nev. The public is invited to attend.

Memorial Day events at the Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery in Fernley

The public is invited to attend two Memorial Day events at the Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery located in Fernley, Nev.

The first is on Saturday, May 27, 2017 with a "Flag-In" event. Volunteers are asked to arrive no later than 8:30 AM to assist in placing an American flag on each gravesite. Participants will receive a free commemorative WW1 pin to show appreciation in preparing the cemetery for the main Memorial Day ceremony.

Nevada Department of Veterans Services Launches License Plate Ad Campaign

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles offers 21 different plates for veterans and family members. The plates can be viewed on the DMV veteran license plate page.

The campaign was launched to increase participation in the veterans plates and a portion of the purchase funds goes to the Veteran Gift Account. The gift account is used by the NDVS to fund veteran outreach efforts and programs throughout the state, which benefit veterans and family members.
