Carson City events and happenings for Thursday, Nov. 1
Good morning Carson City and welcome to Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018. We're now in the month that ushers in the holiday season with Thanksgiving and Christmas around the corner. As for today, there's a number of activities around town including a blood drive, networking opportunities, El Dia De Los Muertos celebration at WNC, an afternoon hike, a movie showing at the Jack C. Davis Observatory, art displays and more.

Here's what's happening today:
— Carson City first responders team with Vitalant to host blood drive. 8 a.m. The Carson City community can save lives in support of local first responders during the Battle of the Badges inspired blood drives on Thursday, Nov. 1 at Carson City Fire Department or Carson City Sheriff’s Office. Participants will receive a brand-new Vitalant T-shirt to celebrate the blood center’s new name and look, formerly United Blood Services. The blood collected will be needed as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches. Donors can schedule their appointment in Carson City at the Fire Department by going here or at the Sheriff’s Office by going here. Appointments can also be booked in advance at (800) 696-4484.
— Network with host Jenny Treece at Coffee Connections at Rustically Divine. 9 a.m. Join Coffee Connections host Jenny Treece, Advertising/Marketing Director, Carson Now, on Thursday mornings, from 9-10 am, at Rustically Divine, 410 N. Carson St. in Carson City. Come mingle with other business professionals and people in the community to expand your network and your way of thinking. — Production Pattern & Foundry Hiring Event. Production Pattern & Foundry (PPF) is hosting a hiring event at the Carson City office of Nevada JobConnect on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018 from 9 a.m. to noon. Nevada JobConnect is located at 1929 N. Carson St, Carson City. Available jobs are: 1. Permanent Mold Operator (Day Shift) JO# 454456 starting at $13.00/hr. and up to $14.00/hr. after 90 days, 2. Permanent Mold Operator (Swing Shift) JO# 454541 starting at $16.00/hr. and up to $17.00/hr. after 90 days. — Day of the Dead Celebration at WNC in Carson City. 11 a.m. Latino Outreach and the Associated Students of Western Nevada will present the third annual El Dia De Los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1 in the Art Gallery in the Bristlecone Building on Western Nevada College’s Carson City campus. The community is invited to attend this traditional Mexican celebration, which honors deceased loved ones and/or their heroes by creating an altar that includes their pictures and favorite foods. There will also be a contest as part of the altar display, and don’t miss out on sugar skull face painting. There will be free Mexican bread (pan de muertos) and Mexican hot chocolate. Participate in games such as la loteria (bingo), el gallito (stomp the balloon) and musical chairs.
— Thursday Hike to Deadman's Creek Trail hosted by Muscle Powered. 3 p.m. Join Muscle Powered for free hikes each week to enjoy Nevada outdoors! Meet at SaveMart on N. Carson Street along the south end of the buildings to carpool to the trailhead on East Lake Blvd, Washoe Valley. Water and sturdy shoes are required. Hat, sunscreen and poles recommended. All hikes are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500' or more. Hike duration does not include time to carpool. — WNC Presents showing of the George Romero classic "Night of the Living Dead." 7 to 10 p.m. In this independent classic, the dead come back to life and eat the living. Several people barricade themselves inside a rural house in an attempt to survive the night. Outside are hordes of relentless, shambling zombies who can only be killed by a blow to the head. The showing will be at the Jack C. Davis Observatory, 2699 Vanpatten Ave.
ONGOING:
— Christmas tree permits available on Carson, Bridgeport ranger districts. Permits to cut Christmas trees on the Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest will be available for purchase beginning Thursday, Nov. 1. The U.S. Forest Service Christmas Tree Program is designed for families, businesses, and institutions wishing to cut their own trees for decorating. Christmas tree permits must be purchased in person and are issued on a first-come, first-serve basis for $10 each, with a limit of two trees per household. Permits are nonrefundable and nontransferable, and only valid through Dec. 25, 2018. The Ranger Districts have a limited amount of Christmas tree permits available, and once those allotted permits are sold, no more will be available.
— The Nevada Artists Association (NAA) presents the annual Nevada Day Art Show, now through Nov. 30. Entries in all categories are judged with cash prizes awarded to winners. The NAA Gallery is located at 449 W. King Street in Carson City and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.
— Give a Dog a Bone Pet Food Drive. All Day. Michael Hohl Motor Company is proud to launch their 5th Annual "Give A Dog A Bone" pet food drive to fill a pickup for the nonprofit organization Pets of the Homeless. They provide pet food and basic emergency veterinary care to the homeless pets in local communities across the United States including Carson City. Last year’s drive collected almost 1,200 pounds of pet food and supplies valued at more than $3,000.
During the month of October bring your donations of dog and cat food to our GM showroom at 3700 S. Carson St. Carson City and help fill the truck. The donations will be delivered to FISH in North Carson City where over 230 local people are asking for pet food each month.
— Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is currently seeking individuals and pairs interested in leading interpretive programs in one of our many parks and open spaces. Interested individuals and pairs are encouraged to apply. If interested, go here.
— Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California Native TANF Program launch Winter Coat Drive. The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California Native TANF Program is hosting a winter coat drive Oct. 1 through Nov. 2, 2018. Please donate new or gently used, clean coats, hats, gloves and snow pants. Items will be distributed to families in need on Nov. 8, 2018 at 2310 South Carson St. Suite 1 Carson City or the Douglas County Washoe Tribe of NV & CA Native TANF Program office, 1248 Waterloo Ln, Gardnerville.
— Nature’s art is in full bloom at the Bristlecone Gallery for the “Nature’s Symphony of Art” children’s showcase sponsored by Arts for Children of Nevada with help from the Jackpot Grant with the Nevada Arts Council. Exhibit runs until until Nov. 9.
— The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, Americana with Cadmium Orange, by artist Gig Depio at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Depio is an artist and an advocate for public art in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was awarded the 2016 Fellowship Grant in Painting by the Nevada Arts Council (NAC). He has worked on various exhibitions and projects with the Nevada Museum of Art, Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery, and UNLV Marjorie Barrick Museum, among others. Depio graduated from Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. He lives in Las Vegas with his family. Carson City Courthouse Gallery, 885 E Musser St., Carson City.
— Nevada Artists Association opens Carson City Autumn art show. The Nevada Artists Association opened its annual "Autumn" exhibit will run through Oct. 19, 2018. More than 100 local and regional artists make up the non-profit NAA which operates the gallery located at Carson City's Brewery Arts Center. In addition to the Autumn Show, two association members will be featured, with art work displayed on the coveted back wall of the gallery, artist Cindy Whitaker and photographer Fred Howland will be exhibiting their finest. The Gallery is located at 449 West King Street. It is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Go to www.NevadaArtists.org for more information.
