Events and happenings around Carson City for Friday, Sept. 14
Hello Carson City and welcome to the end of the work week. Today is Friday, Sept. 14, 2018. Among the happenings, there’s a bevy of art events including gourd classes that kick off the Silver State Art Festival at Fuji Park, music and comedy venues, a flu presentation, a morning hike and more to round out the the day.

— Daily through September, Muscle Powered is holding Membership drive to recruit new members. All new and renewing members in the month of September will be entered in a drawing to win a Gregory Hiking Day Pack.
— Muscle Powered works to make Carson City healthier for all citizens and safer and more accessible for bicycling and walking through education and advocacy, the promotion of bicycle and pedestrian friendly infrastructure, and developing and maintaining recreational trails throughout the city. Muscle Powered is also responsible for organized weekly walks, hikes and bike rides, on and off road, throughout Carson City. Go here to learn more and sign up.
— Friday Morning Walk to Kingsview Trail hosted by Muscle Powered, 8 a.m. Join Muscle Powered for its weekly one hour walks to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City. Meet in the parking area on Kings Canyon Road just west of Kingsview Way. Muscle Powered will walk the dirt trail behind the homes. Water and closed-toe shoes required. All walks are 1 to 2 miles with duration of 1 hour with usually negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved or smooth paths.
— The Silver State Art Festival starts Friday with classes beginning at 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and runs through the weekend at the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall in Carson City. The festival features stunning artwork for sale, 40 award winning artists, gourds, beading, basketry, woodwork, paintings, photography, raffles prizes benefiting Advocates to End Domestic Violence and much more. The Silver State Festival includes 3 days of classes featuring beginning and advanced instructional workshops in gourding, carving, weaving, basketry, woodburning, woodturning and much more! This festival runs all weekend at the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall, 601 Old Clear Creek Rd., Carson City.
— Carson Valley Medical Center Hospital Foundation's 9th Annual Fall Classic Golf Tournament, 9 a.m. Carson Valley Medical Center Hospital Foundation is hosting its ninth annual Fall Classic Golf Tournament on Friday, Sept. 14 at Carson Valley Golf Course. Golfers will enjoy breakfast & lunch, bloody mary bar, a 50/50 golf ball drop, great raffles and prizes along with a chance to win a car at the hole-in-one contest sponsored by Michael Hohl. — Flu prevention discussion featured Friday at Carson City Senior Center, 11:45 a.m. Carson City Nevada Triad presents Flu Prevention, a presentation designed to help people become more aware about the dangers of Flu and how to keep the germs away, at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive, at 11:45 a.m.
Veronica Galas and Nicki Aaker from Carson City Health and Human Services will lead the discussion.
— Carson City Art Gallery’s Artist Reception of the Month, 5 p.m. for September is Roger Freeman, a multi-medium artist living and working in the Carson City area. During his reception you will be able to meet him and talk to him about his wonderful work. Go here to learn more about Freeman and his work. All are encouraged to attend this fabulous artists' reception from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Carson City Art Gallery & Pottery, LLC is located at 110 S. — Pinch Pot Wine Glass: Cafe Creations with Kym Maehl, Friday, Sept. 14, 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W King Street, Carson City. In this class you’ll be using your creative energy to make a drinking vessel with clay. We will be hand building our vessels pinch-pot style and adorning them with our own unique symbolism and creative flair! Once fired, these magnificent works of art will be both beautiful and functional. They will also keep anyone from steeling your drink again. Go to the Brewery Arts Center here for more information.
— Student Art Exhibition: The Wind Calls, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) announces it’s exhibition, The Wind Calls featuring nine University of Nevada, Reno, students’ work. The free exhibition is available to the public through October 9, 2018, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – noon and 1:00 – 4:00 pm. It is held at the BRIC, 108 E Proctor St., Carson City. The Wind Calls includes work by Mahedi Anjuman, Nicki Bracco, Mark Combs, Teal Francis, Hannah Huntley, Gwaylon Leaf, Frances Melhop, Ally Messer, and Carla Miller. The artists used a wide variety of art media including mixed media, ceramics, sculpture, painting, printmaking, and photography to make their art and comments on contemporary life and society.
— The Capital City Arts Initiative, also known as CCAI, presents its exhibition, "Jenny Raven: The Creative Growth Years 1979 - 1984" with artwork by artist Jenny Raven in the city’s Community Center Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public through October 18, 2018. The Sierra Room is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
— Visual Oasis: Works from Creative Growth, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents “Visual Oasis: Works from Creative Growth" at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery in Carson City. The exhibition, with art by 17 artists, will be in the gallery Monday through Friday until Sept. 27, 2018. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
— Ladies get the last laugh at Nugget’s Carson Comedy Club. 8 p.m. Jill Maragos headlines a special “Ladies Night of Comedy – Where Women Get the Last Laugh” event at the Carson Comedy Club, located inside the Carson Nugget Casino Hotel, 507 N. Carson Street, Friday, Sept. 14, at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7:15. Alatte Coffee, Wine & Deli, also located inside the Carson Nugget, will be offering select wines at $5 a glass for the event. — RSVP Deadline Friday for Carson City Republican Women Sept. 18 luncheon at Carson Nugget. Carson City Republican Women to hear 'No' and 'Yes' on Questions 3 and 6 on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018 at the Carson Nugget with social hour at 11 a.m. and meeting called to order at 11:30 a.m. The cost for lunch is $20 per person cash only with reservations required by Friday, Sept. 14, 2018 by contacting Lori Bagwell at 775-220-3646 or by email carsonrepublicanwomen@gmail.com.
