Hello Carson City. The weekend approaches and we're still wondering how we went from Thanksgiving to Christmas so fast. We are coming into Friday, Dec. 28, 2018. Besides having to put on an extra layer of clothing and setting the thermostat a couple degrees warmer, conditions outside are what can be expected as we head into 2019: Cloudy to sunny with a continued chill in the air.

Who would imagine attending a Carson City School District’s Board of Trustees meeting could be so darn fun as it was filled to standing house only with community members, parents, children, and smiling faces; everyone was having such a wonderful time listening to Trustees excitedly converse with one another.

With winter weather having arrived, it seems only appropriate the last Friday of November is when Carson City celebrates the holiday season in a big way by ringing in the spirit of giving with the annual Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights.

Among the happenings, there’s a bevy of art events including gourd classes that kick off the Silver State Art Festival at Fuji Park, music and comedy venues, a flu presentation, a morning hike and more to round out the the day.

CARSON CITY — Anna Camp’s lifelong interest in Native American culture started when she was 7 and had a “museum day” with her second-grade class from Quincy Elementary School.

The field trip for the Plumas County, Calif., youngsters started with a drive Carson City and the Nevada State Museum before heading for California’s capital city of Sacramento and another museum.

The Nevada State Museum will be abuzz with activity on Friday, May 25 with behind-the-scenes tours, demonstrations of the historic Carson City Mint coin press, and a collaborative event with the American Legion.

CARSON CITY — Like other masters of the arts world, the creations of the famous Native American basket maker Datsolalee, are timeless. Ninety-three years after her death in Carson City, Datsolalee is widely regarded as one of the most innovative, important and famous basket makers in the world.

Art doll maker Christine Shively-Benjamin of Carson City will be among thirty artists from Northern Nevada featured at the 23th annual Reno Artisan Show and Sale Nov. 3 and 4 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Admission is free and 20 pieces of original art will be given away.

“Every year we invite some of the best artists in Northern Nevada to exhibit at our show,” says chairperson Julie Sulahria. “It’s always held on the first weekend in November as an opportunity to purchase creative gifts before the holidays.

The Carson City couple learned to throw clay four years ago through a local studio, and now are ready to pass on what they've learned by opening their own pottery studio inside the Carson Mall.

Refuge from politics features painters, photographers, basket makers and more

More than thirty artists from Northern Nevada including Reno, Carson City and Sparks — several nationally known-— will be featured at the 22th annual Reno Artisan Show and Sale Nov. 4 and 5 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Admission is free and 25 pieces of original art will be given away.

Rich and Robin McGregor were all smiles Saturday afternoon as they opened the doors to the new Carson City Art Gallery and Pottery Studio inside the historic stage depot building located at 110 S. Curry Street in downtown Carson City.

According to Judy Carlson, one of the show coordinators, the juried show features returning artists and new artists displaying a variety of techniques and media.

The deadline to submit applications for Official and Signature Nevada 150 events will be 5:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12. Over 400 events have been held across the Silver State since Nevada Day 2013, in celebration of Nevada’s Sesquicentennial, with many more ahead. Enjoy Family Fun Saturday at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson Street in Carson City. Make a twined basket to take home using techniques similar to those used for thousands of years in the Great Basin.

Hurry! Class size limited to 10 children, ages 10 and up, with a parent or adult guardian. This 3-hour class will include breaks and a short introduction to Nevada's wetlands. Free for museum members! Non-members must pay $10 per basket kit plus the regular adult admission fee of $8. Advanced registration required by Jan. 10. In the first part of this two-part class, students will create their own hand built pinch pot to be used as the base for their coil attachment in the second part of this class. Part II of this fabulous class will be attaching pine needle coils and other embellishments to your completed bowl to make a unique and wonderful work of art. Both the pinch pot and basketry are suitable for all levels.

Tuition includes supplies & use of tools and is $60 for both parts of the class. (Please sign up for both parts).
