Events around Carson City for Wednesday, July 24

The countdown to the weekend begins as we head into midweek, Wednesday, July 24, 2019 with daytime highs in the low 90s and plenty of indoor and outdoor activities. Topping the list is the Northern Nevada Development Authority's Legislative Roundup at Casino Fandango. If you want to know how this year's legislative session will affect business, be there. For those who look to the stars for the big picture, there's a multi-media hands on science day presentation at the Nevada State Museum as part of the Apollo 11 moon landing celebration; then there's Wheeled Food Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center and lots more. Enjoy the day.

Do you have an event or happening you'd like people to know about? Tell us about it by clicking here, filling out the details and we'll tell Carson City area readers about your event or happening. Not seeing your event you wish to promote? You can also submit the relevant information, also known as the "5Ws and How” to editor@carsonow.org. We will update this calendar as submissions are made.

Here's what's happening Wednesday:

Northern Nevada Development Authority Business Edge presents A Legislative Roundup. 7:30 a.m. The Nevada Legislature meets every other year to refine, update, remove, and add new regulations that have a profound impact on businesses. Learn about what happened in the 2019 legislative session that will directly impact your business, your community, and get an overview of what legislative topics you need to know about for the future. NNDA’s The Business Edge is a monthly educational series providing information on issues and trends of interest to the northern Nevada business community. A combination of breakfasts and lunches, these monthly briefings offer opportunities to network with local business executives and management teams, elected and government officials, key workforce development leaders, and important nonprofit organizations. The event is at Casino Fandango, Carson City, 3800 South Carson Street. Register for the event at: www.nnda.org/events

Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'New Crop 2019' exhibit. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "New Crop 2019", by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sculptor Mark Combs gives viewers two approaches to his metalwork. His earlier distressed metal car-part sculptures are ornamented with soldered rods and bolts reflecting a ruptured system both socially and figuratively. His carefully hammered bone pieces came into shape after hours of forging as a nod to death and celebrations of life. Photographer Frances Melhop documents aging rural structures with classic color photography. In Vanish, her printed enlargements of unnamed 19th century portraits on silk are elevated to fly across our vision like fleeting memories.

Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Fast Lane, Slow Bake. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) presents an exhibition, "Fast Lane/Slow Bake" by artists Cyndy Brenneman and Tom Drakulich. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings or by appointment. For Sierra Room access visit the Carson City Meetings and Events page or call 775-283-7421. Students may use oil, acrylic, or watercolor paint. Dry media is also welcome. Bring your own supplies and source materials (such as photographs or drawings you wish to paint). Carson City Parks and Rec offers summer bicycling programs for children. 4:30 p.m. The Shred Kids Mountain Bike Camps program returns for a second summer. The next camp date is July 15-29 and there will be another camp August 12-16 (intermediate). All camps will be out at the trailhead for Ash Canyon on the corner of Foothill and Winnie. The camps run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. each day. We have had a lot of community support for this program that we are really grateful for. The camp is run completely by volunteer coaches from the Carson High Cycling Team. Because this program is volunteer ran, it allows us to keep the costs to the participant much lower, for only $35 for the week. A similar camp elsewhere would cost significantly more. Additionally, Bike Habitat has supported the program by donating time to fix up our fleet of bikes so we have a limited supply of bikes available for participants who don’t have access to a bike. There is no additional charge to use one of our bikes, we just want to get kids out on the trails.
