Virtual open mic night, train rides, car show and more highlight weekend events in Carson City region

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region for all to enjoy. New safety guidelines for the state of Nevada are in effect Friday, so make sure to bring a mask and practice social distancing to local events.

Below is a rundown of activities over the next three days:

Friday, June 26
Bookend summer with great reads, activities during 2020 Carson City Library Learning Challenge (all day). From June 13 to July 31, Summer Learning Challenge participants complete a certain number of virtual programs, activities and reading, depending on their age. Prizes are earned for registration and completion, and participants track all their reading time in a simple app. Everyone who registers will be eligible to receive a special take-home kit, with fun activities to log with their reading.

Western Nevada College's Drive-Thru Commencement. 9 a.m. at 2201 W. College Pkwy in Carson City. Unprecedented. Many of Western Nevada College’s graduates are the first in their families to graduate from college. Their novel feats will be matched with an unparalleled commencement ceremony for WNC. The Class of 2020, which totals a record 650 students, will experience a graduation ceremony that many high school students have enjoyed in previous weeks.

ReMax Professionals Dayton Community Blood Drive. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 244 Dayton Valley Rd. Life-saving blood offers second chances and many tomorrows to those who depend on it. The process only takes about an hour and is one of the easiest ways to give back to your community. If you've never donated blood before, we encourage you to try. Make your appointment. Blood donation is essential. You are vital to life.

Nevada Artists Association Spirit of America Show. 12 to 4 p.m. at 449 W. King St. The Spirit of America proves to be alive and well in this judged show. Entries are from Nevada Artists Association NAA member and non-member artists from Northern Nevada and are divided into judged categories including oils, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, dry media, 3D art, photography, digital art and mixed media. Everyone is invited to the awards presentation and reception. Visit the NAA Tuesday through Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m.

Virtual Sewing Workshop. 4 to 6 p.m. Join Patchwork Giraffe via Zoom to virtually learn how to cut, piece, and fold fabric in a special way, then sew. You will be surprised when you turn it right side out and have a bag! This class does require you to have access to a sewing machine at home. Supplies are needed. If you do not have access to the above supplies, please email creativelearning@carsoncitylibrary.org to schedule to pick up a sewing kit for this class.

Brewery Arts Center's Levitt AMP Virtual Music Series. The Brewery Arts Center, located at 449 W. King St., is hosting a series of free virtual concerts. The concerts begin at 5 p.m. PDT and are available via the link above. The joy of free, live music is coming straight to you this summer with the Levitt AMP Virtual Music Series! Featuring dynamic artists from across the country—from New Jersey to California, Alaska to Florida and everywhere in between, get ready for a sonic feast of music brought to you by the 2020 Levitt AMP winners that’s sure to get you movin’ and groovin’. Front Porch at Bella Vita Bistro. 5 to 8 p.m. at 1304 S. Stewart St. Come see Front Porch play out on our patio on Friday, June 26! There will be plenty of live music and entertainment for all to enjoy.

Jack Di Carlo at the Gold Hill Hotel in Virginia City. 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 1540 South Main St. Hear Jack Di Carlo perform an acoustic guitar in the Crown Point dining room at Gold Hill Hotel every Friday in June. Treat yourself to a fine dinner while you enjoy the melodies.

Virtual Open Mic Night at A to Zen. 6 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. In light of COVID-19, A to Zen Gift Shop in Carson City is hosting a virtual open mic night every Friday at 6 p.m. Interested participants can record their performance and send the video with the link above.

Greg Austin to perform at Living the Good Life. 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at 1480 N. Carson St. Our outdoor live dinner party will feature Greg Austin on Friday! Come and enjoy some live music.

Tequila Tasting at San Marcos Grill. 7 p.m. at 260 E. Winnie Ln. Free tequila tasting the last Friday of every month! Reach out for more info or reservations for parties of seven people or more. Available to paying customers over 21.

Fight Camp at Yaple's Ballroom Dance Studio. 7 to 8 p.m. at 315 N. Carson St. This class is a mix of martial art drills, acrobatic conditioning, circus conditioning and boot camp style circuit. Perfect for the family wanting to stay fit and have fun at the same time! Not sure if you're in shape for this? We encourage all students to go at their pace and soon you will be at the level you want to be at. You will be accomplishing your fitness goals! Cost is $10 to drop in

DaVinci and Drinks at the Carson Valley Art Center. 7 to 10 p.m. at 1539 Hwy 395 N. Suite 2 in Gardnerville. Come and enjoy some drinks and art in Gardnerville! Cost is $35 per attendee.

Saturday, June 27

Carson City's Farmer's Market. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. The Carson City Farmer’s Market has returned every Saturday with fresh fruits, vegetables and much more!

Women with Wheelz Car Show in Virginia City. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Silverland Inn and Suites, 100 East St. Women with Wheelz Car Show is coming to Virginia City with a lot of new events added. Open to the first 120 cars, food, music, giveaways, static displays, Department of Traffic and Safety display, Sister on the Fly local ladies, raffle prizes benefiting local organizations and so much more.

Virtual Pokemon Club at the Carson City Library. 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 900 N. Roop St. For all ages, join us virtually via YouTube and Facebook. Watch our DIY craft video on how to make your own Pokeball. This activity can be done at your own pace and at a time that's most convenient for you!

Virginia and Truckee Railroad Company Weekend Steam Train Rides. 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 166 F Street. Weekend steam train rides are back on the Comstock! First train departs the original V&T 1870 depot with seven departures out of Virginia City.

Artist Reception for Katherine Case. 11 a.m. at Artsy Fartsy Gallery, 405 N. Nevada St. Join Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery in Carson City as we host our first artist reception of the season on June 27 beginning at 11 a.m. Katherine Case and her linoleum-cut prints that celebrate the animals and landscapes that celebrate the Sierra Nevada.Many different sizes and images will be available, many are hand painted.

BAC's Flatbed Concert Series continues Saturday featuring 14K. 6 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King St. The Brewery Arts Center will deliver live music directly to the citizens of Carson City while practicing social distancing once again this week. Miles Construction Company has generously donated the use of a Flatbed Truck and with financial support from The Change Companies, the Nauman Foundation, and Carson Tahoe Hospital, the BAC will place musicians and bands on the flatbed and drive them through the streets and neighborhoods of Carson City throughout June and July.

Live Music at Living the Good Life. 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at 1480 N. Carson St. Ev Musselman will perform at Living the Good Life on Saturday, June 27. Please make reservations for the weekend by texting 775-720-5834 before 5 p.m. or 775-841-4663 after 5 p.m.

Tim Meigs Memorial 3D Archery Shoot. 8 to 10 a.m. at the Tim Meigs Archery Range inside Centennial Park. Following COVID-19 protocol the start will be staggered from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Lunch will be available for $6. No prizes will be awarded, this is a fun shoot, so we can dust off our bows and find out just how out of shape we’ve all become during the quarantine.

The Carson Middle School annual Veteran's Day Concert was briefly interrupted by a fire alarm this morning, but there was no fire and all students and community members are safe, according to the district.

"Carson Middle School had a fire alarm sound today during the Veteran’s Day concert. All students, staff and visitors were evacuated safely. There was not a fire. The fire department responded and gave the all-clear to re-enter the building. The school resumed the school day."

UPDATE 11:50 a.m.: On November 7, 2024, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) deputies responded to the 1200 block of Pit Road in the Gardnerville Ranchos for a report of domestic assault involving a firearm. The caller informed Douglas County Emergency Communications that her son, identified as John Brown, had allegedly assaulted her with a handgun and then fled on foot.

According to the Secretary of State's Office, 65.63% of registered voters in the capital city came out to cast their ballots, the majority of which utilized early voting (44.69%), followed by mail-in ballots (43.28%), and finally rounding out the last of the voters on election day (12.03%).

Carson Tahoe Health will host a Community Health Fair this Saturday, Nov. 9 from 9 a.m. to noon at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, 1600 Medical Parkway in Carson City.

NV Energy is reporting power outages Wednesday afternoon in areas around Carson City. As of 2 p.m. there are 165 customers without power. The cause is under investigation. Go here for updates from NV Energy.

While time is up for the polls, which were scheduled to close at 7 p.m., if voters were in line before the cut off they will be allowed to vote. We will update the results as they come in. Carson City polls could take a couple hours to turn in their results.

Please be aware that mail-in ballots are being accepted as long as they were postmarked by election day, today, Nov. 5. This means that we will continue to see more results in the days to come, which is anticipated and expected.
