Carson City arrests: Employee accused of taking money from dry cleaning business

A Carson City woman was arrested Tuesday for suspicion of burglary after allegedly stealing money from a local dry cleaning business, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

Monica June Benjamin was taken into custody at 11:25 a.m. in the 1900 block of North Carson Street. According to the arrest report, a deputy responded Monday to a dry cleaning business in the 100 block of West Winnie Lane for a report of a larceny.

The officer met with the reporting party who said that sometime between 9 p.m. April 3 and 4 a.m. April 4 money had been taken from the premise. Security camera footage showed Benjamin, an off-duty employee, in the business during the time frame that the money, approximately $300, came up missing from the cash register.

The video showed Benjamin handling the bag that contained money and detailed her moving the bag from one place to another and then leaving the business. The money was discovered missing at approximately 3 a.m. April 4. No other person was inside the business during that time, the arrest report states.

On Tuesday, deputies responded to a motel on North Carson Street to locate the woman and investigate the theft of money. A deputy met with the woman, who stated she was fired April 4 and said she was fired because money had come up missing from the business. She was arrested for suspicion of burglary, a felony. Bail: $20,000.

In other arrests:
— A 26-year-old Dayton man was arrested Tuesday for a felony warrant alleging battery causing substantial bodily harm, among other charges.

David Anthony Patten was taken into custody at 11:54 p.m. in the area of Highway 50 East and Centennial Park Drive. He was also arrested for possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the arrest report, a Carson City sheriff's deputy made a traffic stop on a vehicle that had only one functioning front head lamp. Deputies conducted a wants and warrant check through dispatch that showed Patten having an active felony warrant for his arrest that was issued March 11 out of Carson City Justice Court.

The man gave the officer consent to search the vehicle. Inside the officer located a black cloth holding a spoon, hypodermic needle, metal cap and two white pills. The pills were identified as a schedule two narcotics. Bail amount listed: $18,637.

— A 26-year-old Carson City man was arrested Tuesday, 11 a.m. in the area of Fairview Drive and Gordon Street for driving on a DUI related suspended license, using a cell phone while driving, and two counts violation of probation.

According to the arrest report a deputy made a traffic stop after observing the driver of a Jeep holding a cell phone and texting. The officer informed the man the reason for the stop and asked for his license and insurance.

The driver identified himself with his Nevada driver's license, which came back as having been revoked for DUI until February 2020. Dispatch advised the man is supposed to have an interlock device in his vehicle, which he did not have and was also subsequently charged. He was arrested. Bail: $7,871.

— A 31-year-old Carson City man was arrested Wednesday, 1:34 a.m. in the 200 block of Iris Street for parole and probation violation. According to the arrest report, deputies were called to a residence regarding a domestic dispute. The officer spoke with the man involved and ran his name through dispatch. Parole and Probation advised the man was on parole and to take him into custody for violation of parole conditions. He was arrested. He's being held without bail in lieu of a hearing.

— A 25-year-old transient was arrested Wednesday, 3:38 a.m. in the 1900 block of North Carson Street for suspicion of possession of a controlled substance.

According to the arrest report, a deputy made contact with a man who attempted to flee the officer after he observed him near a motel. The officer located the man and engaged in casual conversation and asked him if he lived at the motel. The man stated he wasn't and was going to hang out in the stairwell.

While one deputy was talking to the man another officer checked the area where the man had been seen attempting to leave the area. The officer located a folded piece of paper with methamphetamine inside. Deputies detained the man and read him his Miranda rights. The man stated he understood his rights and denied having possession or knowledge of the methamphetamine, the arrest report states. Bail: $2,500.
