Senators basketball recap: Carson hold-off Hug late, take 38-30 home victory
Basketball season is in full swing, and the Carson Senators look to make an early impact with a 38-30 victory over the Hug Hawks Friday night, marking their first home win in conference play.
Both teams gave a full pledge effort defensively, keeping the action within half-court and limiting any transition opportunities. Points didn’t come easy, but forward Derek Barry and center Trent Robison carried the scoring load for Carson. The two of them combined to score 8 of the 10 first quarter points, which gave the Senators a 10-6 first quarter lead over Hug.
After a slow start to begin the second quarter, Carson finished the first-half strong on a 7-0 run with buckets from Johnny Randle, Barry, and free throws from Kahle Good. Making the score halftime score 23-15 in the Senators’ favor.
Hug soon clawed their way back in the third quarter, as pesky perimeter defense from guard Brandon Garner and scoring bunches from Trayvon Cotton cut the Hawk deficit to 7 points. Heading into the fourth quarter, Carson lead 29-22.
Sloppy turnovers from the Senators kept Hug in the game, but held onto a 5 point margin when it mattered most. Clutch free-throw shooting from Robison and Abel Carter kept the game in Carson’s grasp, as they captured their first home win of the season 38-30.
Robison (11 points 4-6, 8 rebounds) and Barry (8 points, 3-8) combined for 19 points. Carter also chipped in with 8 points, and Randle added 6 points.
Postgame, Barry described the impact of Carson’s first home win of the season.
“Hug played really physical out there tonight,” he said. “But we need to keep improving. It was a good win for us on our home floor and we need to come swinging and start the season strong.”
Carson will look to continue their winning ways Tuesday, December 12, as they take on Reed in a home conference game.
