Carson City Library brought the community to the observatory for a closer look at the cosmos
The Carson City Library held an event Thursday at the Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College as part of the nationwide NASA@ My Library initiative.
The Carson City Library was one of just 75 public libraries nationwide chosen out of the 500 that applied to be part of NASA@ My Library, a national science initiative that connects NASA with public libraries and communities.
Observatory director Dr. Tom Herring gave a presentation on the tools and techniques astronomers and astrophysicists use to explore the vast cosmos. The majority of the evening was be spent viewing celestial objects through a variety of telescopes.
Carson City Library has been holding public programs for various age groups since August that explore NASA, science, and technology. The library is also reaching out to NASA scientists, engineers and educators to collaborate on high-profile events to attract community interest.
Programs include national and international STEM/space events including the 2017 Solar Eclipse, Earth Day, as well as story times, maker clubs, Science Cafes and other STEM-related offerings. Activities are planned through October 2018, and more information, including a program schedule can be found here.
NASA@ My Library is led by the National Center for Interactive Learning (NCIL) at the Space Science Institute (SSI) in partnership with the American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office, the Pacific Science Center, Cornerstones of Science and the Education Development Center.
Funding comes from NASA’s Science Mission Directorate via cooperative agreement No. NNX16AE30A.
