Carson Nugget and the Carson City based Food for Thought organization are hosting a coat drive for children now through Nov. 15. Organizers of this drive are asking for donations of new coats, for children ages 5 to 18, which will be distributed to children at the Kids Christmas Brunch, to be held Dec. 23 at the Carson Nugget Grand Ballroom.

In what many had hoped would be a return to the wild for a large black bear tranquilized Tuesday morning on the west side of Carson City, ended in tragedy as the 19-year-old animal died in transit, where it was later discovered he had a brain tumor.

Nevada Chief Economist David Schmidt will be the featured speaker at the Carson City Chamber Soup’s On! luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Gold Dust West beginning at 11:30 a.m. The public is invited to hear Schmidt give his reasoning behind his statement that “Nevada is statistically overdue for a recession.”

Brown St Properties

Carson City invites interested individuals to bid on the purchase of the Brown Street Properties comprising of parcel numbers 008-303-15, -16, -21, 36, -37, and -39, through public auction for not less than fair market value.

In 2005 the Western Nevada HOME Consortium (WNHC) funded the purchase of properties on Brown Street using federal HOME funds in order to construct 45 units of affordable, for-ownership low-income housing. This project failed to materialize due to the economic downturn and the eventual bankruptcy of the developer.

CARSON CITY — V&T Railway will bring its event-filled 2019 season to a close this weekend with a final 150th Anniversary train on Friday, Oct. 11, vintage steam trains on Saturday, Oct. 12 and Sunday, Oct. 13 and a Toast of the Canyon spirits train on Saturday, Oct. 12 following the steam train.

Temporary Closure of Linear Ditch Trail

Sections of the Linear Ditch Trail in Carson City will be closed starting Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2019, for maintenance and cleaning. The multiuse path will be closed from the east end of the Linear Ditch, east of Fremont Elementary School and continue west to South Roop Street along Governor’s Field. Maintenance is anticipated to take up to several weeks.

The 12th Annual Scandinavian Festival brings the rich traditions of Norwegian history and culture to Carson City on Saturday, Oct 12. Demonstrations of traditional food and music along with examples of the traditional “Bunad” clothing.

An approaching low pressure system will bring strong, gusty winds Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag warning for Carson City and much of the Western Nevada Sierra Front.

CARSON CITY — The Carson Tahoe Health Foundation recently received a $10,000 donation from the Sierra Nevada Realtors. The donation was raised through the Sierra Nevada Realtors participation in Carson Tahoe’s annual Hopefest event and through the Realtor’s annual Cornhole for a Cause competition.

A 32-year-old man was arrested Sunday in the 2500 block of North Carson Street for suspicion of a second DUI, a misdemeanor, and operating a vehicle with a suspended or revoked license, a Carson City sheriff's deputy report said.

UPDATE: The 19-year-old bear captured Tuesday in Carson City by wildlife officials has died as a result of a brain tumor after he was tranquilized, with the intention of being released later into the wild, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife. UPDATE 4PM: From Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon: The occupant who was home at the time of the fire was safely out of the home prior to firefighters arriving. No injuries were reported. The structure is a total loss. Due to the quick actions of firefighters the adjacent homes were not damaged. Carson City is being covered by mutual aid units.

UPDATE 3:45PM: Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon reports knock down on the mobile home fire on Dori Way. One person was out of the residence when firefighters arrived and is being evaluated for injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
