Carson City area weather: Cold front ahead to bring wind, overnight lows in the 20s
An approaching low pressure system will bring strong, gusty winds Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag warning for Carson City and much of the Western Nevada Sierra Front.
The highest winds coinciding with the passage of the cold front Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The Red Flag Warning is in effect from 2 p.m. Tuesday to 8 a.m. Wednesday.
The main fire weather threat will be across the Highway 395 corridor along the Sierra Front from Washoe County into Mono County and for portions of southern Lyon and western Mineral counties.
Winds will be southwest to west 20 to 25 mph with gusts between 35 and 45 mph. Wind gusts near 50 mph are possible for wind-prone spots along the 395 corridor. Winds in lower valley locations may decrease to 10 to 15 mph tonight but mid slopes and ridges will continue to see gusty winds into Wednesday morning.
Humidity will be a minimum 10 to 15 percent Tuesday afternoon, with poor to moderate recoveries through Tuesday night. The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
The weather service advises people to avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting or campfires. Any spark may cause a wildfire in the dry grass and brush where fuels are capable of carrying fire. Those heading out on area lakes need to be aware of the potential for hazardous boating conditions. If you do choose to kayak or paddle board, remember to wear your personal flotation device at all times.
Meanwhile, the cold front will bring a drop in temperatures around Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County areas with daytime highs Wednesday and Thursday in the low 50s and nighttime lows in the low 20s. Friday will begin a warmup with highs in the low 60s and around 70 for Saturday.
Around the Lake Tahoe Basin, daytime highs Wednesday and Thursday will be in the mid to upper 40s, with night time lows in the mid 20s. Friday and Saturday will bring sunny skies and temperatures warming into the 50s to near 60.
