The 34th Annual Dayton Valley Days will be held on Sept. 16-17, 2023 and at Wednesday's Room Tax Board meeting in Yerington, the Board awarded the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce $3,000 for advertising and promotional funds for the event.

The final 2022 events for Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College are set for this weekend, Dec. 16-17. The premier facility in Northern Nevada to get up close and personal with the moon, stars and planets is hosting two Mike Thomas lectures and a Star Party.

According to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s November 2022 economic report, Nevada gained 5,300 jobs over the month. Employment increased by 57,200 since November 2021, an annual increase of 4 percent.

The Salvation Army Carson City Corps provides gifts for children every year at Christmas. This year, the Corps is in particular need of gifts for teenagers and is seeking the community’s help.

“We are in particular need of items for teenagers — things like clothes, gift cards, sports equipment, makeup, jewelry and advanced LEGO sets,” said Captain Holly Beeson, Corps Officer for The Salvation Army. “At this point, we do not have enough gifts to distribute at Christmas for these local children.”

CARSON CIY — Nevada Builders Alliance, the state’s largest professional organization representing the construction industry and affiliated sectors, has announced Jaron Hildebrand as its new executive director, heading into the new year.

The Nevada State Police invites the Northern Nevada community to a “Cram the Cruiser” toy drive happening this Saturday, Dec. 17, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Reno Nevada Highway Patrol Office, 357 Hammil Lane in Reno.

Nevada State Police troopers and officers will be collecting toy donations for children in need in our community. Refreshments will be provided as troopers attempt to "Cram the Cruiser" with gifts.

Two were arrested Wednesday for suspicion of felony drug possession with intent to sell and other alleged offenses, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Clerk-Recorder Aubrey Rowlatt provided the Carson City Board of Supervisors with an update on her department Thursday, which covers elections, records, and public administration duties.

It was also Rowlatt’s final meeting as Clerk-Recorder as she chose not to bid for reelection this year.

Fifth graders at Seeliger Elementary School got into the spirit of the holiday a little bit early with a special visit from Miss Carson City Brianna Cross who helped the students write holiday letters for the elderly in the Carson City community.

Carlos Sotelo Angel’s first two years at high school were rough and he was struggling to find his motivation and success. That all began to change when he started at Pioneer Academy in Carson City at the start of his junior year. Carlos realized he needed a change and Pioneer provide the more intimate structure he needed to be focused on his academics.

Western Nevada College is excited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Jack C. Davis Observatory in 2023. The observatory is named after the college’s first president and opened in 2003 with astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the Moon, lecturing at opening ceremonies.

GreenUP!, a non-profit working with businesses to reduce waste, announced that several Green Dining restaurants will host a charity drive in partnership with FISH – Friends In Service Helping, a non-profit that provides wrap-around social services to community members in need.

The charity drive will run from Dec. 15 through Dec. 25.

On Tuesday, the Carson City School District Board of Trustees discussed changing their meeting schedule from a minimum of two meetings per month to only one meeting per month, approved of a new sex education video for high school students, appointed a member to the Family Life Advisory Committee and more.

The location for Carson City Symphony Association's "Violin and Piano House Recital" on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 18, 2 p.m., has been changed due to icy conditions at the original venue. The afternoon of music, conversation, wine, and dessert with Brian Fox, violin, and Eric Kao, piano, will be at 191 Heidi Circle, Carson City.

Kids 16 and under are invited to come in a find gifts for the whole family for only $5. A special section in the shop will be set up for kids to purchase gift items $5 and under plus we will be offering free gift wrapping for the kid's gift purchases. This event happening all day on Friday, Dec. 16 from 11am-6pm at MidTown Marketplace, located at 104 Corbett St in Carson City.

Carson Tahoe Health and Carson City Health & Human Services, in partnership with several area health organizations, are now officially assessing community feedback, following the wrap-up of an in-depth regional health survey.

On Wednesday, the 18th annual Holiday with a Hero shopping spree took place at North Carson City's Walmart, serving 160 children throughout the school district.

Each K-8 student is provided with a gift card for $100 at the store so that their hero (a volunteer first responder from a variety of careers) can assist them in their shopping spree.

It’s that time of year, the Carson City Assessors Office has mailed out the 2023 Tax Assessment Roll. Did you notice a big increase? The Assessors Office has been in the process of reappraising the city. This includes the use of high resolution aerial photography.

The Nevada Department of Employment, Training, and Rehabilitation is pleased to announce that the Board of Examiners granted the green light to implement and start building DETR’s new and modernized Unemployment Insurance system. The modernization aims to make the process of filing for unemployment easier for Nevadans.

Austin’s House is a private non-profit dedicated to providing high-quality emergency shelter and services for abused and neglected children in northern Nevada. Each year, the House holds its annual fundraiser to provide much-needed funds for its annual operating budget.

The Carson City Elks Club is throwing a farewell party for longtime Carson City resident and character Jim Smolenski on Friday, Dec. 16 at 5:30 p.m.

A 32-year-old woman was arrested early Tuesday for a felony, non-fugitive warrant and for misdemeanor suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office report.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will be turning on the Homestead Holiday decoration lights for the remainder of this week for people to come out and enjoy! “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas” took on a whole new meaning this past weekend as more than four feet of snow fell on Tahoe ski resorts, guaranteeing prime conditions for the holidays. With roads plowed, a forecast of sunshine throughout the week, and expanded ski terrain now open, Santa arrived early for winter enthusiasts and the area’s hospitality businesses.

CARSON CITY — Carson Tahoe Health has announced an expansion of its Nurse Apprentice Program which allows students enrolled in nursing programs an opportunity to get ‘real-world’ experience while working alongside hospital staff. The expansion, which was made possible through the recent American Rescue Plan Act grant, will allow CTH to have 40 apprentices at all times.

The Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division says it has received reports of fraudulent calls from persons claiming they represent the highway patrol, with the callers asking for personally identifiable information.

After years of negotiation between the military, conservationists, tribal nations, and Nevada’s congressional delegation, the House last week passed an expansion of Churchill County’s Fallon Range Training Complex.

In the field by 5th Street and Roop Street in Carson City, between the old tennis court and the fire station, is a gravel berm. I work in a building close by and noticed that decorated Christmas trees have been placed along the berm.

Being curious, I walked over there and found half a dozen decorated trees on stands, though not with water, and there was a "FREE" sign in front of them. If anyone needs a beautiful tree, please go look at these trees.

After a winter storm that dropped multiple feet of snow in the Sierra and brought up to 5 inches to the valley floors, and 15 to 24 inches in the foothills, the weather system is mostly over now, except for cold temperatures and icy conditions along some roadways.

CARSON CITY — Nevada’s local housing leaders are bringing affordable homeownership solutions to all corners of the state of Nevada through the Home Means Nevada Initiative. The initiative has allocated $10 million to Nevada Housing Division and Nevada Rural Housing. These agencies are launching down payment assistance programs that will provide $15,000 in DPA to eligible first-time homebuyers.

A dental insurance reform bill has been filed by Senator Heidi Seevers Gansert (R-Reno) to raise the requirement that insurance companies must spend on patient care. If passed, at least 80 percent of the money dental insurance companies collect from patients must be spent on dental care or patients get the difference back.

Sunday's Homestead Holidays at Silver Saddle Ranch in Carson City has been canceled due to conditions at the ranch from the storm overnight. Saturday's festivities were also canceled due to the poor weather conditions.

The Carson Middle School Boys 7th grade basketball team was victorious Saturday night in the 2022 Tah-Neva Basketball Tournament at the Douglas County Community Center.

The undefeated 7th grade Solons beat Eagle Valley Middle School, Carson Valley Middle School and Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School to bring home the first place trophy. The final game score against Pau-Wa-Lu was 58 to 40.

The Trail of Lights event at Washoe Lake State Park is canceled tonight, Sunday, Dec. 11, due to damage from last night's storm, according to Nevada State Parks officials.

The Carson City Senior Center will host a number of events and activities through December. Among them are free senior bus pass distribution days, holiday meals, a "know your rights" debt collection presentation and more. The senior center is located 911 Beverly Drive.

UPDATE SUNDAY: A fresh layer of snow on the ground adds to the holiday spirit as the "Santa Train," a much-loved Northern Nevada Christmas tradition, returns to the rails by train today, Sunday and again next weekend, Dec. 17-18 at the Nevada State Railroad Museum at 2180 South Carson Street in Carson City.

The train rides, which last approximately 20 minutes, are available from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
