Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights 2013 features Empty Bowls Project fundraiser
Christmas and holiday lights will illuminate the Capitol Building and downtown Friday night when Carson City flips the switch at the annual Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights celebration.
The event brings thousands to downtown Carson City marking the city's official kick off of the Christmas and holiday season. Festivities begin at the capitol grounds, 5:30 p.m. where more than 300 voices of the Carson City 5th Grade Music Students Singing Ensemble will provide musical entertainment.
After the music, state trees at the capitol and Carson Street will be lit up with Christmas lights. There will be remarks by Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell followed by Santa and Mrs. Claus who will arrive in a 1927 Seagrave fire engine and give out candy canes.
Santa and Mrs. Claus will then take to the streets in the fire engine along with strolling Victorian carolers from the Battle Born Civil War Reenactors who will lead a candlelight procession to the City Tree at the First Presbyterian Church at Musser and Nevada streets. Mayor Crowell will again provide remarks and the second procession begins to Arlington Square Ice Rink at Carson and Robinson streets.
Families can take a whirl on the ice for a special price — only $4 for skate rental and skate pass. Chili dogs will be served up hot by the Elks Club and cookies and hot chocolate courtesy of the Downtown Business Association.
A new feature to this year's celebration is the addition of the Empty Bowls Project to benefit Friends in Service Helping (FISH).
Empty Bowls is a grass roots movement to end hunger. Local artists donate handmade bowls. Restaurants donate soup and food. For a minimum $10 donation participants can choose a bowl and fill it with food.
The artisan bowl is yours to keep as a reminder of the empty bowls in our community. There will also be an art auction. The event runs from 4 to 7 p.m. or when the soup runs out. Your donation helps feed the hungry in the Carson City area. Tickets are on sale at the following locations:
— Carson City Children's Museum
— Remedy's Bar
— Purple Avocado gift shop
— Comma Coffee
— FISH (Friends In Service Helping)
For more information contact Robin at 775-313-8628 or email emptybowlscc@yahoo.com.
All proceeds from this event will be donated to FISH, a local non-profit that works to feed the hungry.
Events continue Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. The Arlington Square Ice Rink will be open for holiday skating and refreshments, hot cocoa, hot dogs and chili dogs served up again by the Elks Club.
From noon to 4 p.m. Santa will be at the ice rink handing out candy canes. At 1 p.m. winners of an art contest will be announced.
