Reno Ice, the region's first and only NHL-regulation sized ice rink, has officially opened.

It has been a plan in the works for months and Monday the National Hockey League made it official — they are bringing NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe to Edgewood Tahoe Feb. 20-21, 2021.

For winter enthusiasts eager to explore South Tahoe’s vast outdoor winter wonderland, tourism officials recommend advance planning, mid-week stays, and securing reservations early for desired attractions and dining. To help visitors plan a safe, healthy winter adventure, Tahoe South offers updated information on its website at “Know Before You Go” and Responsible Recreation with all current state and county health protocols.

It makes perfect sense for Northern Nevada, a region that can see blankets of snow and ice a few months out of the year, to have its own ice sports facility. Now that hope will become a reality with the completion of Reno Ice's Jennifer M. O'Neal's Community Ice Arena.

Cold temperatures and dry air have created ideal conditions for making snow in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Heavenly Mountain Ski Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort all plan to take advantage of this week’s cool weather window to build a solid base for the upcoming 2019-20 winter season.

The warm spring weather around Carson City and western Nevada will end Tuesday as daytime temperatures are expected to plummet by 25 degrees or more bringing a hard freeze by late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning and the potential for snow showers in the foothills, forecasters say.

Following a recent report from Carson Now about the indefinite closure of the Arlington Square ice skating rink, many community members were upset and others wanted more information. We decided to reach out to Jennifer Budge, Carson City’s Parks and Recreation Director to help explain the details and clear the air of any confusion or rumors that may be circling on social media.

Following eight seasons of skating and in need of approximately $100,000 worth of new equipment and repair, the Arlington Square Ice Rink in downtown Carson City will not be in operation this winter, according to city officials.

The Sierra Inline Hockey League in Carson City was one of six organizations to receive a grant through the Save Mart Companies CARES Foundation, the company announced Wednesday.

The fate of Carson City's ice rink is up in the air. "We need $105,000 to operate this for another year," Jennifer Budge, director, Parks, Recreation and Open Space, told the Parks and Recreation Commission on Tuesday.

Ice skaters have until 10 p.m. tonight to enjoy the Arlington Square Ice Rink set up in the parking lot between Robinson and Spear streets in downtown Carson City.

Finally Friday, Carson City. January is coming to a close, and personally, I’m hoping for an early spring. Let’s enjoy the last weekend before February with some live music. Drinking with Clowns hit the Sassafras stage at 8 p.m. – get there early for dinner and a good seat. Comma Coffee can fill you up with coffee, beer, tea, and some soulful songwriting. A to Zen is open to anyone and everyone that wants an audience. Skate to your own tune at the Arlington Square Ice rink: today is the last day to glide and slide.

The jazz plays on at Living the Good Life with a jam hosted by Rocky Tatarelli and Judith Ames. Show off your mad gaming skills at the Ultimate Smash Tournament at Retro Replay or at Teen Game Night at the Carson Library. Geeks Who Drink takes over Westside Pour House tonight with their pub quiz. Singers in town have a new karaoke option, Caterpillar’s Hookah Lounge.

WEDNESDAY:

It’s hard not to notice the beauty around Carson City: the mountains, the historic buildings and our Capitol, the people. We have several talented artists and photographers that capture our valley in the best light. It’s a winter wonderland in our neck of the woods, and probably a little messy to drive in. Thankfully, the Carson City and Douglas County School Districts have given you an extra two hours to get the kids to school. It’s not really expected to get above freezing, so be extra careful on what will likely be icy roads. This is the last scheduled week of the Arlington Square Ice Rink, so, if the weather allows, try to get in one last trip. Be safe out there, Carson City, spring is just around the corner.

MONDAY:

As this storm system moves in, it makes it difficult for list-makers, such as myself. I cannot predict which of these events will be affected or cancelled because of the snow. The show must go on for the kids of Youth Theater Carson City. ‘The Lion King, Jr.’ is in its final weekend of performances.

More snowy days are on the way, so bundle up, keep the snow shovel handy, and drive safely. Enjoy the sunshine while we’ve got it. More rain and snow is just around the corner, so if you think you’ll need sandbags, grab them now. The Carson Animal Shelter Initiative (CASI) meets monthly and is always looking for more people to get involved: join them at the new Animal Shelter. Award-winning Canyon White returns to Living the Good Life for an acoustic set. Chili’s restaurant is hosting a fundraiser for Eagle Valley Middle School: helping out is as simple as buying dinner.

TUESDAY:

Several people are enjoying yet another three-day weekend. This time it’s to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?” One way to observe the MLK Day of Service is to participate in the Clothing and Food Drive for homeless veterans. Drop-off locations are at FISH on East Long Street and the RSVP office on Northgate. The Healthy Community Coalition’s monthly cooking class and demo features Mediterranean food and is open to all comers. You’ll find the ice rink open at 10 a.m.

Wintery Sundays are almost asking for hot chocolate and ice skating. Head down to Carson Lanes for their Bowling ‘Golf’ Tournament and see how well you can maneuver 18 lanes with varying oil patterns. Classic movie lovers are in for a treat as Galaxy Theater offers two viewings of the 1952 favorite, ‘Singing in the Rain.’ Grab some friends or your special someone for ‘Bostyx’ featuring David Victor formerly of Boston. You’ll find this great concert in the Performance Hall at the Brewery Arts Center.

SUNDAY:

The snow has finally stopped falling and now it’s time to go play in it. What’s on your weekend fun list: snowmen and skiing or a toasty fire with a good book?
