Fa La La Fridays, Small Business Saturday, Virginia City train rides and more highlight weekend events around Carson City

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Virginia City will kick off its Candy Cane Express and Train of Lights on Friday with all day train rides. Small Business Saturday will begin in downtown Carson City with COVID-19 restrictions put in place. Combined with pool tournaments at Bulldog Billiards and live music at Living the Good Life, the state capital will be buzzing with excitement! Read on for more information.

Friday, November 27

— Fa La La Fridays in Carson City. Hosted by CC Downtown Business Association, Agency 36 and Carson Jewelry & Loan, Friday shopping special offered from participating businesses each Friday thru Christmas. Go here for more information and a list of participating businesses.

Candy Cane Express, Train of Lights steam up for the holidays in Virginia City (all day). The V&T’s traditional Candy Cane Express will also be running during the day at 11:30am, 1 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. The Train of Lights will be running at 5 and 6:30 p.m. starting Nov. 27 and running Friday and Saturday evenings through Dec. 20. All trains will be thoroughly disinfected between runs and set up at half capacity for social distancing. Masks are required. Tickets will be limited, so reservations are highly recommended.

Wildlife and Holiday Show. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Art Gallery at Prism, 1615 U.S. Hwy 395 N. in Minden. Each month we ask a new eclectic group of Regional artists to exhibit their award winning work, keeping our gallery fresh! This season we have fine art jewelers, hand painted silk scarfs, original works of art, archival prints and seasonal note cards depicting scenes of the region for your gift giving.

Carson Mall Craft Fair, Santa Claus brings holiday spirit to Carson City. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 1313 S. Carson St. The annual holiday craft fair has taken up residence in the Carson Mall just in time for the season of giving, with health considerations in place. Shoppers are encouraged to come into the mall, where masks are required, to buy their holiday wares from over twenty local vendors.

Nevada Artists Association Nevada Day Show. 12 to 4 p.m. at 449 W. Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. Open Mic is back at A to Zen tonight in person and virtual! Come and support local musicians from all over and enjoy a night of music.

— Small Business Saturday in Carson City. Most participating shops are open by 9 a.m. Start your Small Business Saturday with a free coffee and cookie in Laxalt Plaza. The first 100 shoppers will also receive $10 in Downtown Dollars to spend at any of the participating businesses, including shops, restaurants, entertainment & more. Holiday season begins with COVID safety measures during Carson City Small Business Saturday happening throughout the day. While Carson City may be on a pause, residents and visitors are encouraged to safely support small businesses, every day not just on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 28.

Carson Valley's Small Business Saturday. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Small Business Saturday is the Saturday following Thanksgiving and Black Friday, and is a day dedicated to encouraging consumers to support smaller local businesses. One Pocket Pool Tournament at Bulldog Billiards. 6 p.m. at 251 Jeanell Dr. Suite 9 in Carson City. We will be following BCA rules and double elimination.Sign-ups start at 5 p.m. and tournament tables will be open for practice to enrolled players. There will be a $10 entry and $2 greens fee.

UPDATE THURSDAY: The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two people who died Wednesday morning following the two vehicle crash on I-580 in Carson City. They are Alejandra Hernandez Valtierra, 36, and Viola Santoyo Huizar, 48, both of Carson City.

UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Dayton Elementary School in Lyon County was honored Wednesday along 13 other schools including Carson High in Carson City as a Nevada Purple Star School.

Schools receiving the designation have committed to supporting the educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families.

Carson City School District hosted a ceremony Wednesday morning with local dignitaries from the Nevada Department of Education and officers from local military bases. Carson High School was honored with a Nevada Purple Star School designation for supporting military-connected students and their families.

A 37-year-old man was arrested for suspicion of obstruction, trespassing and felony sex offender failing to register, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Laura Ricks, TOSA/Instructional Coach at Empire Elementary School, was honored as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year, at the Tuesday, April 23, school board meeting and annual event.

Additionally, Sandra Guzzetta, special education paraprofessional at Bordewich Bray Elementary School, was recognized as the Education Support Professional Employee of the Year, and Chelise Crookshanks, principal at Mark Twain Elementary School, was recognized as the district’s Administrator of the Year.

Tickets are now available for this summer’s Capital City Brewfest. This year’s event takes place June 22 on Curry Street at McFadden Plaza in Carson City. More than two dozen brewers, as well as several food trucks, will line the street from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Plus there will be live music on the McFadden Plaza stage.
