Fishing report through Oct. 19

Here is this week's fishing report through Oct. 19 for Nevada, the Sierra, Northern California and southern Oregon.

BISHOP AREA, CALIF:
Rick and Patti Apted - Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425) (www.lakesabrinaboatlanding.com) reports:
Sabrina Lake: What a week! Between the w-i-n-d & s-n-o-w - you just never know and then Santa showed up – we thought we had stumbled into the Twilight Zone. Santa (JustClaus.com) spent a day at the Lake amongst the snowy weather, not sure if he was in training or just touristing – we put in our wish – and lo and behold, it’s come true - an addition to the family.
And, then, there were so many people on the dam and not a fishing pole in sight – like I said the Twilight Zone.
This week, fishing was good, but off and on – may have had something to do with the weather.
Nightcrawlers, Power Bait, Woolly Buggers and jigs working at the Inlets.
Trolling flashers and nightcrawlers or a Thomas Buoyant or just nightcrawler seems to be doing the trick.
Drifting the Lake using nightcrawlers, Power Worms or Power Bait (ah – what a way to enjoy the day on Lake).
Shore fishing with Power Worms, nightcrawlers or Power Bait.
Didn’t get a stocking from the DFG, but that’s understandable and with all the fish we’ve gotten this year.
Jack Gove from Anaheim landed his biggest fish yet – a whopping 1-1/4 pounder - let the ribbing begin!
Bill and Andrew of Stevenson Ranch were making “Memories” and catching dinner at the Lake.
The Lake Sabrina Cafe will close for the season on October 16th.
The last day to rent boats will be on Oct. 23 and only until 1pm and then we’re on vacation.
Lake Sabrina Boat Landing fall hours:
Breakfast is served from opening until 11:00 am
Lunch from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm
Homemade Pies and Homemade Ice Cream served all day!
Sunday – 7:00 am to 6:00 pm
Monday – 8:00 am to 6:00 pm
Tuesday – 8:00 am to 6:00 pm
Wednesday – 8:00 am to 6:00 pm
Thursday – 8:00 am to 6:00 pm
Friday – 8:00 am to 6:00 pm
Saturday – 7:00 am to 7:00 pm
CAMPGROUNDS ARE CLOSING IN THE BISHOP CREEK CANYON – SABRINA CAMP, NORTH LAKE & WILLOW closed September 18th @ 1:00pm. The only campground to take reservations is Four Jeffery (www.reserveamerica.com and enter Four Jeffrey) all others are first come first serve. There is a full hook-up campground also on the South Lake road, Creekside RV Park.
Take it easy on all the mountain roads, the deer are out in the mornings and evenings and there’s lots of hikers out there – can’t stress this enough!
Some BIG changes in-store for us again this week – warmer temps – go figure. Temps are anticipated to warm back to the mid-60s for mid-week and the lows for high-30s. Be sure to check www.weather.gov and enter ASPENDELL, CA on the site and it will give you a fairly good hint at the weather or check in with Howard at www.Mammothweather.com.
We’re still making HOMEMADE vanilla ice-cream to go with our HOMEMADE pie – we also have sodas, beer, wine, coffee, tea and hot cocoa during our regular store hours!
Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

BISHOP AREA, CALIF:
Jared Smith - Parcher’s Resort (760-873-4177) (email: sierrasmitty@cebridge.net):
South Lake: After some rough weather earlier in the week, including some serious wind and about a foot of snow, things calmed down and the fishing went back to where it has been over the past few weeks with plenty of limits with a few big fish mixed in.
Not many reports from trollers but bait anglers reported solid action on Chunky Cheese, Garlic or Salmon Peach Power Bait or nightcrawlers.
Mini-jigs, Thomas Bouyants and Power Worms in orange or pink are still producing well for those who prefer artificials.
The dam, the rock slide and all three inlets are the best spots on the lake but a couple decent fish in the 3 lb class were caught at Buck Tucker cove as well (you'll have to have the marina staff to show you that spot).
The lake level is still only a few ft down from full capacity so access is exceptional for both shore and boat anglers.
South Fork Bishop Creek: Steady flows and consistent DFG stocking is translating into excellent fishing on the South Fork. No secret baits to report, just the usual stuff - spinners, worms, crickets, salmon eggs etc.
North Lake: Slow fishing reports from North Lake after the storm.
Weir Pond: Fly fishers continue to tear it up at the Weir on streamers and Nymphs.
Until the snow there was a fair dry fly bite in the evenings but that seems to have calmed down since the snow.
Intake II: Decent bite from shore, especially over by the dam or by the bubble whole. Power Bait, worms, and mini-jigs are doing best.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
We've been getting a few mixed reports from the reservoir this past week, some reports are good and some anglers have reported some slow days.
It seems as though the bait anglers are starting to move out from the inlet channels for better action, fishing out in the middle and off Rainbow Point with crawlers and Power Bait.
Trollers are still doing pretty good with Rapalas and Needlefish.
We've also had some good reports from float tubers dragging streamers down near the dam, they're starting to get into some nice browns this past few days, some up to 4 pounds.

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF:
John Voss of the Caples Lake Resort (209-258-8888) (www.capleslakeresort.com) reports:
The Carson Pass area received 9” of snow on October 5th.
The last Sierra snowfall was a short 3 months ago on June 29th!
The forecast is for sunny and warmer this weekend.
Caples Lake Resort is open for great fall fishing and the late fall Aspen color change. The Aspens seem to be 1 to 2 weeks late in turning this fall—maybe following the late or “no spring” and the late lake thaw on June 23rd.
Caples Lake will be open for Lodging and the Marina and Store 8 to 5 daily through October 24th, then close for our Fall shutdown and then open Christmas thru March for the winter season.
HAVE A GREAT FALL SEASON.

The South Fork Chetco has some of the best public access and is in a very remote setting.
Temporary regulations in effect beginning Aug. 1, 2011:
Mainstem Chetco River upstream of BPA powerline crossing at river mile 2.2 is closed to all angling including trout through Nov. 4, 2011.
Tributaries to the Chetco River remain open for trout through Oct. 31, 2011 as per Southwest Zone Regulations.
Anglers are starting to troll the estuary looking for some early Chinook.
Most anglers are waiting for the ocean Chinook bubble fishery which starts Oct. 1 and runs through Oct. 12.
Anglers will want to check regulations prior to fishing.

COMINS LAKE, WHITE PINE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife ( www.ndow.org) reports:
A few bass have been showing up, but no trout due to the pike infestation.

CONVICT LAKE, CALIF:
Jen Heintzelman of Convict Lake Resort (800-992-2260) (www.convictlakeresort.com) reports:
Catch of the Week: It was a little chilly mid-week but that did not stop Luke & Jake Johnson from Saugus, CA to have a great time and catch some fish. They brought in their bounty on Thomas Bouyants along the South Shore.

Lodging Specials: See the red light lodging special below...we have extended The Restaurant at Convict Lake season schedule to November 13th!
