From computers to fitness and fashion, WNC Continuing Education offers courses this fall
Although the fall semester has begun at Western Nevada College, many noncredit educational and self-improvement classes are still available through WNC Continuing Education.
Class offerings range from learning the Washoe language to Tai Chi, to accounting methods designed for small business owners.
Other offerings include fashion, self-defense for women, and basic computer knowledge.
To register for any of the classes described below, phone WNC’s Continuing Education Office at 775-445-4268 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday.
Learn more about the Washoe language and culture from instructor Herman Fillmore, who was raised on the Dresslerville Reservation for Washoe Indians.
“It’s more communication and conversation, playing with the language and having fun,” Fillmore has said.
High school freshmen through adults are eligible to take the class, which begins on Tuesday, Sept. 20. In introducing native Washoe language to students at WNC, Fillmore plans to create a variety of situations and utilize members of the class to assist with the learning process.
If you plan to start your own business, then QuickBooks I is a must. This accounting-focused class teaches students how to use QuickBooks, including the chart of accounts, vendors and customers.
This class begins Saturday, Sept. 24. For additional training in QuickBooks, take QuickBooks II and III on Saturday, Oct. 1 and Saturday, Oct. 8. In QuickBooks II, students will receive detailed instruction about vendors and payables, customers and sales, general accounting and payroll. In QuickBooks III, the first two classes are reviewed, and advanced training in inventory, sales tax, invoicing, customizing QuickBook and statements is provided.
If you think it’s time to get your body ripped, register for one of the month-long R.I.P.P.E.D. exercise classes. Sessions begin on Monday, Oct. 3; Wednesday, Nov. 2; and Monday, Dec. 5. Sue Cavallero will lead exercise enthusiasts through cardio and weight-driven workouts. Resistance, Interval, Power, Plyometric, Endurance and Diet are the foundation of the class.
Look and feel younger by enrolling in Take 10 Years off Your Look, a one-day fashion-oriented class on Saturday, Sept. 8. Learn about the clothes that must go, fashion mistakes made by women older than 40 and the secrets to building a wardrobe with chic essentials and accessories.
Combine meditation with motion by enrolling in Tai Chi, the ancient Chinese exercise. The class opens Monday, Oct. 17. Learn forms and practice with the aim of promoting health and longevity in a calm, slow motion.
In addition, a Women’s Self-Defense class is being offered starting on Thursday, Oct. 20. The class is geared toward improving women’s self-esteem and self-reliance.
Women will learn strategies for staying out/getting out of trouble, as well as legal and improvised weapons.
Don’t be intimidated or frustrated by computers any longer by registering for a one-day Computer Basics class on Saturday, Nov. 5. Learn basic computer skills, including Windows operation, vocabulary, use of a mouse and keyboard, saving and printing. The class also covers use of USB drive, Internet basics, troubleshooting, creating and operating an email account, and viewing and creating attachments.
