Labor Day Weekend Highlights
Carson City:
Saturday – Monday: Take a ride on the Virginia and Truckee #25 Steam Engine at the Nevada State Train Museum. Rides begin approximately every 40 minutes, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Fares are $8 for ages 12 and over; $4 for ages 4 to 11 and Museum members; and FREE for ages 3 and under.
Saturday: enjoy the Downtown Business Association's monthly Wine Walk. Sign up at The Carson Nugget, Carson Jewelry & Loan, Touched By Angels, Remedy’s Bar, Cactus Jacks Casino, The Brewery Arts Center, or Comma Coffee for only $15. Visit Downtown Coin for a book and coin album giveaway. You’ll find vintage folk music by Hallie Kirk at Comma Coffee and live music at the Nevada Artist Association Gallery. The Shadow and Light Photography Group are showcased at the Nevada Day Store.
Sunday: the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation will hold an open house for the Wungnema House in Mills Park from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Sunday: Catch a concert at the Carson Nugget. Double Trouble –A Tribute to Tom Petty and Bob Seger begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 or $30 for VIP.
Monday: you’re invited to the eighth annual Interfaith Potluck Picnic and FISH food drive on the lawn of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at corner of Division and Telegraph. It runs 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. This year, the Interfaith Earthcare is encouraging people to ride their bicycles to the picnic where they will bless them. Please bring a main dish, salad, side dish, or dessert to share in the potluck. Bring your own set of plates, eating utensils, and lawn chair.
Virginia City:
Friday: Take advantage of Flashback Friday Museum Days in Virginia City. All Virginia City museums have waived admission, but donations are encouraged when you pick up the map at the Virginia City Visitors Center.
Saturday – Monday: you’ll find something to enjoy during the Great Civil War Days in Virginia City. The Civil War Camp at Miner’s Park is open to the public and features a swap meet Saturday evening and a prayer service Sunday morning. Witness one of the five train battles that leave from the V&T Station or head to the Delta Saloon for a Victorian High Tea. www.ccwr.us
Saturday - Sunday: you won’t want to miss the Comstock Residents Association’s 6th Annual Labor Day Rummage Sale, Concert, and BBQ at the Silver City Town Park, Silver City. It runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, and is a benefit for the Preservation of the Virginia City National Historic Landmark.
Monday: The annual Labor Day Parade begins at noon. Stick around and you’ll witness the ‘Battle of C Street’ by the civil war reenactors as part of the Great Civil War Days.
Reno/Sparks:
Wednesday – Monday: I hope you’re hungry. The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off will be in Victorian Square in Sparks. Vendors, music, and all the bar-be-que you can eat await.
Lake Tahoe:
Saturday: performing the best of Cole Porter to Stevie Wonder, the Reno Jazz Orchestra’s 17-piece jazz band will present “Music of the Masters” - a live performance of blues, swing, and soul with award winning vocalists Jamie Davis and Clairdee. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the concert starts at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday night rocks with Stevie Wonder at Harvey’s Outdoor Arena.
Sunday: The Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority presents the annual Labor Day Lake Tahoe Fireworks Extravaganza at 8:30 p.m. The show features a simultaneous music broadcast that can be heard on local stations KRLT-FM 93.9 and KOWL - AM 1490.
Monday: What would Labor Day be without a little labor? Join the Keep Tahoe Blue Labor Day Beach Cleanup at Nevada Beach in South Shore Lake Tahoe. It runs from 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. They ask that you bring a reusable water bottle and some sunscreen. For questions or more information, email events@keeptahoeblue.org or call 530-541-5388. Douglas County:
Saturday: It Takes A Village Music Festival from 2 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. in the stockade at Genoa’s beautiful Mormon Station State Historic Park. VIP seating up close to stage is $38, General Admission $28 - bring your own seating arrangement. $5 kids under 12. Beginning on the Village Stage will be award winning Dougie L. singing the Great American Songbook followed by Gruve Nation. Beginning at 5:15 p.m. on the Grand Stage is ROCKETMAN, an exact reenactment of an early Elton John concert, featuring gorgeous, exact replica costumes-(many actually worn by Elton).
Sunday: Sweet Sippin Sunday is a great event in Genoa. $12 gets you a commemorative glass to take around and sample various vodka cocktails with. Every month the town chooses a different charity: September raises funds for Douglas 12 Lodge of the Masons. The sipping runs from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
