Monday forum to discuss Carson City medical marijuana dispensaries

Have questions about the state's marijuana laws and the new city ordinance? Join Partnership Carson City and Sierra Nevada Forums for a special forum Monday that will address these and more.
The July 14 forum, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Bob Boldrick Theater inside the Carson City Community Center, will present an explanation of the Nevada Revised Statute 453A relating to medical marijuana, and the new Carson City ordinance outlining the zoning for medical marijuana production and distribution facilities as they relate to the future of medical marijuana in Carson City.
Presenters include Steve Gilbert representing the Nevada Medical Marijuana Program, and Lee Plemel and Susan Dorr Plansky with the Carson City Community Development Department.
They will be joined by Marla Dade Williams, former Deputy Administrator with Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health and Chad Westom the Bureau Chief over medical marijuana and six other state programs for the question and answer portion of the forum.
The forum will be moderated by Barry Smith, Director of the Nevada Press Association.
An ordinance allowing for two medical marijuana dispensaries and facilities allowing for cultivation was approved July 3 in a 4 to 1 vote by the Carson City Board of Supervisors.
The measure came before the board as part of Senate Bill (SB) 374, commonly referred to as the “Medical Marijuana Act,” that was adopted by the Nevada Legislature and signed into law in 2013. The law authorizes medical marijuana establishments in Nevada, but gives local jurisdictions the right to opt in or out. Nearby Lyon and Douglas counties have decided not to sign in as part of the law.
Carson City leaders had tentatively decided to opt in, and agreed earlier this month to abide by the law by creating regulated zoning areas and business license requirements. Supervisors agreed in a 4 to 1 vote to allow for two dispensaries, and facilities allowing for cultivation.
