Carson City weekend filled with motorcycles, hot rods, brews and bubbly

Classic cars, motor bikes, beer judging, tattoo and pin-up contests, food, live music and array of family-friendly activities will fill downtown Carson City and Fuji Park this weekend for three events: The Battle Born 1864 Brews, Bikes and Bubbly fundraiser, the 12th annual Carson City Sheriff's Office Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge and the 31st Run What-Cha-Brung car show.

“It’s going to be an awful lot of fun,” said Dana Lee Fruend, marketing director for Nevada Day, Inc. “The vibe is eclectic Carson City. It’s this little mix of old and new.”

The Friday and Saturday Battle Born 1864 Brews, Bikes and Bubbly downtown event, hosted by Nevada Day, Inc., is a fundraiser for the annual Nevada Day parade and celebration to recognize the state’s admission into the Union on Oct. 31, 1864.

“We’re really excited at Nevada Day, Inc., to be taking on these new events,” Fruend said. “These kinds of events are to help keep Nevada Day going. We’re taking care of business.”

The fundraiser will be held in conjunction with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office’s 12th annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge. Officers will compete in a variety of challenges on a course set up along Carson Street from Robinson to Musser, which will be closed during the events.

“This training improves the rider’s skills and promotes camaraderie between the officers and the general public who come to see this event,” said Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Scott McDaniel.

Practice will begin around noon Friday an run through 5 p.m. Opening ceremonies will begin 8 a.m. Saturday and run through 6 p.m. Awards will be presented around 7 p.m. Go here for more information.

The public will also have a chance to join the action during the Extreme Scooter Challenge when participants will be allowed to ride their scooters (49cc) through the course. Entry fees for this event will be given to a local charity and is limited to the first 10 riders who sign up.

Brews, Bikes and Bubbly will feature food vendors and activities during the same times. Fruend said there will be something for everyone, including a mustache contest at 2 p.m. Saturday open to all genders and ages — with categories for painted or glued on ‘staches and “peach fuzz.”

“This event is designed for people to get really cheeky,” she said. “Everyone can totally get involved.”
Other contests will include tattoo and pin-up, craft brews and wine, along with an exhibition bout from the roller derby team Carson Victory Rollers.

Participants an meet actor Jack Waggon along with the Naughty Tea Mistresses of Nevada. Live music Friday night will be provided by Mo Beach and Mojo Green will take the stage Saturday.

“It’s really a win-win,” Fruend said. “We’re bringing new events to downtown and it’s what is going to keep us going and improve Nevada Day.”

Meanwhile, the Karson Kruzers will host its 31st annual Run What-Cha-Brung car show with the kickoff Friday, June 26 in the back parking lot of the Carson Nugget and Saturday, at the Fuji Park Fairgrounds in Carson City.

The history of the Karson Kruzers "Run What-Cha-Brung" began when B.J. Barnhurst and some friends discussed the fact that there should be a car show that allowed anyone who "loved" their car to be a part of the show.

"No matter what it looked like, how much money was put into it, if it ran or not, it should be allowed to be showed by its owner hence "Run What-Cha-Brung" was born," organizers say. Events begin Friday at Carson Nugget east parking Lot No. 5, with registration at 6 p.m. and dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday events begin at 7 a.m. at Fuji Park.

The Kruzers have been honoring this idea for more than three decades. Car owners, local and from as far away as Tennessee have pushed, pulled and driven their beloved vehicles to Carson City to be a part of this event. Go here for the schedule.

Every year throughout our region, pets are found dead in cars due to heat exhaustion, including those with windows cracked.

With outside temperatures often in the 90s and above, internal car temperatures can reach anywhere from 114 degrees after 10 minutes, to 140 degrees after an hour. Cracking a window often does nothing at all as rolling down the windows has been shown to have little effect on the temperature inside a car, according to the Humane Society of the U.S.

Today I started pruning out the water sprouts in my four crabapple trees. Some people might call these “suckers,” but suckers grow up from the bottom of the trunk and water sprouts grow in the upper parts of the tree. I have been training three of these trees into a somewhat flattened umbrella shape for almost 20 years. The water sprouts just ruin that effect. So, out they come.
