Open Studio Basic Painting at the Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students will work on their own paintings from subject matter they have chosen. The instructor, Mark Tompkins, will work one-on-one with each student to help them complete their project from start to finish. Each student must supply their own materials. Students may choose to paint in either water colors, oils, or acrylic paints. This is an open enrollment drop-in class, no need to sign-up. Tuition: $25 per session or $40 for the day. Initiative manager of Capital City CIRCLES to be Carson City Democratic luncheon speaker. 11:30 a.m. Tom Blake, NETworX Program Manager at the Capital City CIRCLES Initiative will be the featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon. An Anglican priest, Blake came to Carson City from Muncie, Indiana, where he served for 13 years as pastor of Grace Episcopal Church. The acronym CIRCLES stands for “Connecting Individuals With Resources That Change Lives and Empower Sustainability.” It is an affiliate of CIRCLES USA, a movement that connects high and middle income volunteers with families in poverty who struggle to land a job, negotiate a lease, or manage credit card debt. Those who succeed become a resource for others still in crisis. Its slogan is, “Building community to end poverty.” This event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 11, in the banquet room of Carson City's Round Table, on Retail Drive just off College Parkway. Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, these luncheons help to defer recurring expenses at Carson City's Democratic Headquarters. Foster Grandparents are people 55 and over who enjoy spending time with children. “Grandmas” and “Grandpas” volunteer time in schools mentoring and tutoring children. — American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric CPR, AED, First Aid Training Hybrid Course, Western Nevada College, 9 a.m. Prepare for the unexpected with first aid training from the American Red Cross. Developed and taught by experts, this course will empower you to provide care when it's needed most. You will complete a portion of this course through the American Red Cross's award-winning online portal (this takes 2-3 hours), and complete the hands-on portion of the course on the WNC campus. The course will include basic first aid, CPR and AED skills to give you the confidence necessary to perform life-saving procedures when they're needed most. This course is OSHA-compliant and your certification is good for two years following course completion. This class is $70.

Jukebox International Film Festival open for 2019 film submissions. Ongoing. Jukebox International Film Festival has opened its doors for submissions for its third year. Known as “the festival that specializes in music-themed films,” JIFF is accepting new entries in the following categories: Narrative Features, Narrative Documentaries, Narrative Shorts, Documentary Shorts, and Music Videos. In 2018, the festival, which is held in August, featured nearly 30-hours of programming from 14 countries over a 2-day schedule. This year, JIFF is expanding to a 3rd day, and they anticipate adding ten additional hours to their schedule. For additional information, visit JIFF’s website at jukeboxiff.org. Jukebox International Film Festival is operated by Wired Wednesday Digital Arts Association, and is presented in conjunction with Jazz and Beyond, who refers to JIFF as “beyond Jazz and Beyond,” as the film festival is held the week right after the end of their month-long music festival.

Carson City kindergarten registration begins. The Carson City School District is asking parents to begin registering children who will be 5-years-old by Sept. 30, 2019, and eligible for Kindergarten for the coming 2019-2020 school year. Full-day Kindergarten classes are offered at all elementary schools in Carson City.

Reno artist work showcased at Carson City's Legislative Exhibition Gallery. Daily. Reno artist Kate O’Hara need only to open her door and look to the mountains to find inspiration for her creations. O’Hara’s exhibit, “Botanica Obscura,” can be seen for the next three weeks at the Nevada Arts Council’s Legislative eXhibition Series (LXS) inside the Nevada Legislative Building in Carson City.

Throughout the 2019 Legislative session, the works of six Nevada artists is being featured. O’Hara is the second of the six artists and her display will remain in place through March 15. "My work is highly influenced by nature,” she said. “I spend a lot of time hiking and camping around Reno and Tahoe, taking pictures of wildlife. These photos often serve as inspiration for my work.” Managed by Nevada Arts Council, the Legislative eXhibition Series (LXS) Gallery space is located on the first floor across from the Caucus Deli in the Legislative Building, 401 South Carson Street, Carson City. Since 1985, LXS has displayed artwork by 140 Nevada’s visual artists during the biennial legislative session.

Chinese woodcutters exhibit at Nevada State Museum in Carson City. In their heydays in the boom-and-bust mining culture of the late 1800s, the mining camps of Aurora, Nevada and nearby Bodie, California had a combined population of nearly 20,000. Keeping the thriving camps supplied was an ongoing challenge. A little-known piece of history of the two boomtowns — the role of the Chinese woodcutters who supplied firewood and charcoal to the camps — is the subject of a major new exhibit at the Nevada State Museum. “Fueling the Boom: Chinese Woodcutters in the Great Basin,” opens Friday in the museum’s South Gallery. The Nevada State Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, free for museum members and children 17 and younger. Parking is available in the free public lot on the west side of Curry St. behind the museum.

Artists sought: Logo contest to celebrate Nevada Artists Association Fine Art Gallery's 40th year. Calling all Graphic Artists: Nevada Artists Association Fine Art Gallery is celebrating its 40th anniversary. NAA would like to have a shiny new graphic for its logo to use throughout the year and we need your help. We are offering a $250 award for the winning logo. We encourage you to visit the gallery located on the campus of the Brewery Art Center at 449 W. King Street in Carson City to get a feel for it. Some of the original members are still showing their art there. The graphic needs to have the ability to be reduced to 1.5” x 1.5” or 1” x 1.5” with a minimum of 600 ppi. "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.

— WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba classes. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude. No prior dance experience is required — Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself! On Friday, Carson City Supervisors heard the official results from the 2024 General Election, and voted to certify unanimously.

The Sixth Annual Silver State Art Festival in Carson City this September showcased over 40 award-winning artists, celebrating creativity and community. Organized by the Nevada Gourd Society, the event featured a vibrant mix of painters, photographers, gourd artists, jewelry makers, and more, along with a raffle offering nearly 100 donated items.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the identification of human skeletal remains found earlier this year as those of 75-year-old Richard Shifflet, a Dayton resident who was reported missing in October 2022.

Nevada boasts more than six hundred ghost towns, thousands of mining camps, stage and railroad stations and mines. All too often, though, the focus is on just a handful of ghost towns, such as Berlin, Rhyolite and Belmont. Consequently, many other sites become forgotten, their ruins and history obscured in the Nevada deserts for over a century.

Friends to All is dedicated to bringing joy, cheer and friendship to seniors in our community during the holiday season. Since 1999 this group has been working to meet the needs of those with limited financial resources who are home bound or in care centers with little or no family nearby. Each year 150 to 200 visits are averaged in the Carson City area.

As our mutual friend Mark Twain reminds us around this time of year, “The Christmas holidays have this high value: that they remind Forgetters of the Forgotten, and repair damaged relationships.” We thank you Samuel, for that reminder, ever so poignant in this particular Christmas season.

The annual Robert Burns event hosted by Nevada Society of Scottish Clans, draws approximately 600+ attendees from northern Neva­da and northern California, making it one of the largest such events of its kind on the West Coast.

Nevada’s employment growth over the last 12 months is now 1.3 percent with October unemployment seeing a 0.1 percent increase to 5.7 percent, according to figures released by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation's October 2024 economic report. The state’s labor force grew by 1,379.

The Carson City Host Lions Club is pleased to announce that Oriah Land, the daughter of Shaona Land, has won the local competition in the Lions International Peace Poster Contest. The Lyon County Board of County Commissioners held a special meeting on Friday, November 15, 2024, to finalize the canvass of votes for the 2024 General Election.

The Board certified the election results, marking the conclusion of the democratic process for the county's participation in the statewide election. Lyon County Clerk/Treasurer Staci Lindberg, thanked the 69 poll workers, Lyon County staff and many others that contributed to the success of this election.

The Carson City Treasurer’s Office and Carson City Utility Billing have become aware of fraudulent water bill emails requesting past-due payments from Carson City water subscribers, similar to fraudulent emails that are currently taking place throughout the rest of the United States.

Willy Wonka, Jr. follows the enigmatic candy manufacturer Willy Wonka as he holds a contest, hiding golden tickets in five of his delectable candy bars.

Those who find the tickets win a tour of the Wonka factory and a lifetime supply of candy.

Among the five winners are four bratty children and one kind-hearted boy, Charlie Bucket, who attends the tour with his grandfather.

The children must adhere to Mr. Wonka’s rules or face the consequences. The show features numerous roles, including the iconic singing and dancing Oompa Loompas.
