A fire at the Carson City landfill continued to burn overnight, leaving smoke visible throughout the Carson City area and into Mound House on Thursday morning. The landfill is closed today as Carson City firefighters and the Department of Public Works continue to suppress it.

A 39-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of domestic battery second offense, a misdemeanor offense, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

CARSON CITY — GreenUP!, an environmental education non-profit that helps local businesses implement sustainable best practices, announced a Green Dining District event emphasizing Plastic Free July. Growth Management Committee was initiated in 1978 in response to growth that was pressuring the City’s ability to provide critical services and infrastructure. UPDATE 6:35PM: The fire at Old Hot Springs Road and Research Way is extinguished and crews are mopping up. Meanwhile, firefighters remain at the landfill fire, where brush crews continue to work on stopping it from spreading into brush.

UPDATE 11:13PM: Carson City's landfill will be closed Thursday, July 13 due to a fire burning in the debris area. The fire is not a threat to the surrounding area and no structures are damaged. Carson City's Fire Department and Public Works Department are actively working to suppress the fire.

Carson City Fire Department responded late Wednesday afternoon to a fire at the Carson City Landfill, 3600 Flint Drive in East Carson City.

The Nevada Department of Education and the Office of Governor Joe Lombardo announced Monday the release of the first round of $70 million in funding for the Early Childhood Innovative Literacy Program.

The funding was made possible by the passage of, Governor-sponsored, Assembly Bill 400 during the 2023 session of the Nevada Legislature. The funds can be used to support early childhood literacy and readiness programs for children under six years of age.

Beginning Monday, July 17, the Blackwell’s Pond Park Playground Project will begin, with completion anticipated in late October, according to Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space. The entire playground will be replaced.

The second annual Holiday with a Hero Golf Tournament was a success, raising approximately $17,000 to support scholarships for local students. The event, held on Saturday, June 18, at Eagle Valley Golf Course in Carson City, saw 20 teams with 78 golfers coming together for a worthy cause.

On June 20, 74-year-old Daniel Keith O’Brien of Carson City was sentenced to 10 years to life in prison following an arrest alleging multiple child sex offenses.

Veteran Support Golf Tournament

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8071, Serving Virginia City and Dayton is hosting a golf tournament to support our Veteran and Community Services Building project.

A 28-year-old man was arrested Monday for suspicion of unlawful occupancy, a gross misdemeanor offense, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Sparks Centennial Little League’s 12u girls are on their way to represent the State of Nevada at the Little League Softball West Region Tournament in San Bernardino, CA. Centennial brought home the State Championship on Sunday in Battle Mountain winning over Southern Nevada’s Summerlin South 4-0 punching their ticket to Regionals. Centennial will be competing against other 12u girls from Arizona, Hawaii, Northern California, Southern California, and Utah for a spot in the Little League Softball World Series.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies responded late Monday morning a two vehicle crash with one vehicle on its side near the intersection of East Long and North Carson Street.

This past Thursday, July 6, SOSMC held the second round of an eclectic two round tournament known as the President’s Cup. What makes this competition unique is it’s played over two consecutive tournament Thursdays, but every player gets to use his best score from either round for each hole.

So, if a player has a blowup hole in one round but a better score in the other round, then the better score is used. It’s a fun experience that results in heavy bantering before and after each round.

Cast of Social Security

Carson Valley Community Theatre’s new show, the hilarious comedy "Social Security," opens this Friday, July 14, at the CVIC Hall in Minden, NV. The playwright, Andrew Bergman, has contributed to several Hollywood movies, including Blazing Saddles and Fletch.

Some years ago I was invited to participate in a Chautauqua out in Warrensburg, Missouri, alongside Harry Truman and George Washington Carver. We had a grand time of it, and enjoyed each other’s company ever more when we were off duty. In our Warrensburg wanderings I happened to notice a statue of a dog, a hound dog named, “Old Drum.” I thought it quaint to have a statue of a hunting dog in the town square, and attributed it to the soft hearts of the good citizens of Warrensburg. They even sent me home with a pin of Old Drum, dated 1870.

The Nevada Department of Transportation is inviting the public to a webinar to receive an update on the Department’s progress and future plans in collaborative efforts to build a reliable statewide electric vehicle charging network. The Carson City Sheriff's Office on Saturday identified a Mound House man who was found dead in the Carson River after being reported missing during a kayak trip that began July 2.

I’m discouraged and upset. After using metal drums and troughs to plant vegetables in, putting down cardboard and mulch, and then framing the tubs in with fenced netting (see picture below), a dang ground squirrel still dug underneath the cardboard and fencing. He got into the pot and proceeded to dig up radishes and damage the roots of the zucchini. Fortunately, he ignored the developing squash.
