Carson Valley Community Theatre's comedy 'Social Security' opens this Friday
Carson Valley Community Theatre’s new show, the hilarious comedy "Social Security," opens this Friday, July 14, at the CVIC Hall in Minden, NV. The playwright, Andrew Bergman, has contributed to several Hollywood movies, including Blazing Saddles and Fletch.
The show focuses on Barbara and David Kahn, a trendy New York couple who are art dealers. Their lives are turned upside down when Barbara’s uptight sister and her nerdy CPA husband arrive unexpectedly to drop off her cantankerous mother so they can save their college daughter who has announced that she now “lives only for sex.” The chaos continues when the mother hits it off with a famous artist who just happens to be Barbara and David’s best client.
“The play is at times both farcical and touching,” said Michael Hall, who plays Maurice, the artist. “The New York art society setting is a far cry from Northern Nevada, but the themes of family, love, and relationship challenges are universal.” “The show is about love, love found and love lost,” said Rachelle Resnick, who plays the uptight sister, Trudy. Giovanna Rose Jones, who portrays Barbara, added “the play spotlights the potential of art to inspire and uplift.”
Although the show is comedic, it contains mature themes and may not be suitable for young children. “It’s going to be fun,” said Karen Mason, the show’s assistant director. Harriet Cummings, who plays the matriarch Sophie, agreed. “If you like comedy you will love this show!"
The show runs July 14-23. For tickets and more information, contact Carson Valley Community Theatre at carsonvalleycommunitytheatre.org or call 775-782-6622.
