Windy conditions may blow smoke into Carson City region through Monday morning
Smoke from the Lowell Fire and Willow Fire will continue to impact Northern California and western Nevada through early Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. West winds will transition to northeast winds on Monday afternoon, allowing for areas of dense smoke to push west of the Sierra crest.
Earlier Sunday smoke from the fires began moving into the Carson City area but had cleared some by mid afternoon. Protect yourself from wildfire smoke: Go here for general information from the weather service about smoke impacts and what you can do and go here for current air quality information.
The low pressure will move into Oregon and Washington bringing breezy afternoon and evening conditions to the eastern Sierra and western Nevada by afternoon and into the evening.
Southwest to west winds will gust to between 20 and 30 mph, with the strongest winds between 3 and 9 p.m. when local gusts to 35 mph are expected. The winds will bring choppy conditions to area lakes north of Highway 50, with small water craft in danger of being overturned or swamped. The gusty winds will also bring elevated fire weather conditions. The weather service advises to take steps to avoid starting fires, including stowing trailer chains properly and avoiding target shooting near dry vegetation.
A high pressure system will move into the area by midweek pushing daytime temperatures to the upper 80s to low 90s for the Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas. There's a chance of thunderstorms by the weekend, according to the weather service.
Meanwhile, Highway 50 is fully opened as more progress is made on the Kyburz Fire. Officials have changed the number of acres burned to 98 acres and the fire is now 80 percent contained. The size change due to more accurate mapping from the infrared flight.
The road is open but motorists need to watch out for firefighting equipment and crews still in the area.
CalFire has downgraded the number of acres burned in the Lowell Fire to 1,500 acres. It is 5 percent contained as of Sunday morning. Smoke from the fire has begun move into the Carson City area.
Firefighters are also battling the Willow Fire in Madera County south of Bass Lake that also started Saturday. It has grown to more than 1,100 acres as of Sunday morning, closing roads and prompting mandatory evacuations as fire crews worked to protect threatened structures.
