Saturday evening the moon was blood red although it was not due to an eclipse but rather the light being filtered by the ongoing smoke.

The smoky rising sun was caught behind the eagle at the intersection of south Carson Street and I-580 as well as the S on the hills to the east of Carson City.

Also, weather and conditions permitting, the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team will continue widespread prescribed fire operations this week in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies responded late Thursday morning to a structure fire in the 100 block Kentuck Lane near Crown Point Drive and Gold Hill Drive.

The column of smoke seen Thursday from Highway 50 East is at Empire Ranch Golf Course, which is conducting prescribed burns to accomplish hazardous fuels reduction and wildlife habitat restoration, according to the Carson City Fire Department.

As part of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s fuels reduction efforts, prescribed pile burning will be taking place today in the Clear Creek drainage off U.S Highway 50 below Spooner Summit, two miles south of Carson City. Smoke may be visible from Highway 50, as well as from the Carson Valley.

Empire Ranch Golf Course will be conducting prescribed burns to accomplish hazardous fuels reduction and wildlife habitat restoration. These burns are conducted within strict environmental conditions and under a permit issued by Carson City Fire Department. Smoke will be seen throughout the Carson area, please don’t report this as a fire. Only call 911 if you have an emergency.

There is a prescribed fire happening this Monday afternoon at Empire Ranch Golf Course. Carson City dispatch notes it has been receiving numerous calls from citizens reporting a fire. The fire is a controlled burn done by the property and was, earlier, putting up a heavy amount of smoke.

A 57-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the area of E. Nye Lane for speeding, driving with a revoked license, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team will resume prescribed fire operations this week in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Operations will continue over the next several weeks, conditions and weather permitting. Smoke may be visible.

UPDATE: Carson City Fire Department reports the fire was knocked down at 1:57 p.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies responded Sunday afternoon to a fire involving an RV near a mobile home off of Sherman Lane and Kit Sierra.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

The Carson City Fire Department will be conducting wildland fuels reduction prescribed burn operations beginning Tuesday, Dec. 29, in the Voltaire Canyon area throughout the week, weather permitting.

A structure fire was reported at 3:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Sandstone near Cinnabar and Diamond.

First responders from Carson City as well as Truckee Meadows fire are enroute to the scene.

According to dispatch a neighbor called stating that flames and smoke could be seen from the residence.

Contact was made with the homeowner who stated no one should be inside the residence.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Monday morning to a report of a small fire in an Allouette Way apartment complex.

UPDATE 8:10PM: Five apartment units were damaged and six people have been displaced due to the fire at 410 West Winnie Lane, according to Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief Micah Horton. There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Nevada Tobacco Prevention Coalition, comprised of collaborating public health and private partner organizations, encourages Nevadans to participate in Thursday's 44th Annual Great American Smokeout.

UPDATE 2:08 p.m.: Sheriff's Office units were told they could clear the scene.

Just before 2 p.m. on Friday a possible structure fire was reported at the Gold Dust West hotel.

As part of Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s hazardous fuels reduction efforts, both Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts’ fire crews will conduct pile burning beginning in November 2020 through May 2021, weather and fuel conditions permitting.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies responded Thursday evening to a fire at an apartment complex in the 500 block of East Long Street. Firefighters quickly knocked it down. No injuries were reported.

While some areas of western Nevada have experienced freezing morning lows already, a strong Arctic cold front that will sweep over the Carson City and Sierra region now through Tuesday is expected to be a noticeable and chilly one indeed.

UPDATE 6:30PM: The fire appears to be under control. A Carson City Fire Department battalion chief has begun to let engines return to quarters.

The Carson City Fire Department was called early Thursday evening for a fire with smoke and flames visible at the landfill off of Highway 50 East.

A research project was recently published by the Journal of Hospital Management and Health Policy, indicating that 60 percent of Washoe County residents (and 74 percent of Washoe County non-smokers) would favor a law prohibiting smoking in all casinos in Washoe County.

Increased fire activity in northern California and a return of modest west winds may bring a return of haze and smoke to the Carson City, Lake Tahoe and western Nevada region that could linger for the next couple days, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Warmer weather and less smoke may be in store for the Carson City area this week, along with breezy conditions as a ridge of high pressure is forecast to bring sunny skies and light winds heading into the first weekend of October.
