Surprise snow in Carson City makes for several fender-benders

Well, the weather forecasters got it wrong today, but that's OK. They usually do get it right. What was supposed to be rain in Carson City, forecasted by the National Weather Service, has been, mostly wet, slushy snow and snow showers, beginning at around 11 this morning, then falling as rain and then picking up late this afternoon and early this evening as snow.

Carson City patrol deputies pursue vehicle to Reno, one in custody

Carson City sheriff's deputies were involved in a pursuit late this morning on I-580 from Carson City to Reno, with the Nevada Highway Patrol intercepting the vehicle at South Meadows Parkway in Reno.

According to dispatch, the vehicle, occupied by one person, was involved in a dispute with someone in Carson City.

Care Flight called after pedestrian struck by car at Adams and Carson Street

UPDATE: Care Flight was called Monday night to an accident involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Adams and Carson Street. The call to dispatch came in at 8:05 p.m. The 37-year-old adult male victim suffered life threatening injuries.

Arriving Carson City firefighters gave aid to the victim and transported him to the Carson City Airport where a Care Flight air ambulance flew him to the trauma ward at Renown Medical Center in Reno.

NHP: Wadsworth driver, passenger charged In fatal Lyon County hit and run

Two Wadsworth women have been charged in the Nov. 18 hit and run crash that killed a woman who was a pedestrian walking along the road on State Route 427 in Lyon County, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Liann Christy, 21, has been charged with felony DUI causing death and leaving the scene of an accident causing death. Katrina E. Paddy, 22, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death, said NHP Trooper Dave Gibson on Monday.

Memorial at Cactus Jack's Tuesday for pedestrian killed in crosswalk

Employees at Cactus Jack's Casino will hold a memorial for Mike Shields this Tuesday, Nov. 25 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. inside the Poker Room at Cactus Jack's at 420 North Carson St., Carson City.

Shields died Nov. 11 after being struck in a crosswalk by a motorcycle as he was returning from Cactus Jack's, where he was an employee. The accident remains under investigation. The Nevada Highway Patrol has had difficulty in locating the family of Mr. Shields. Friends say Shields would have celebrated a birthday Tuesday.

Passenger dies in two vehicle crash on Highway 95 near Tonopah

An elderly woman died in a two vehicle crash Wednesday morning on Highway 95 in Esmeralda County, a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper said. Three others sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The crash investigation details learned so far indicate a 2006 white Dodge Caravan was traveling northbound on U.S. 95 when for unknown reasons at this time the driver, a 60-year-old Tonopah man, who had two other passengers, drifted off the right shoulder and over corrected, said Trooper Dave Gibson.

$12.5 million in federal money OK'd for Incline Village to Highway 50 improvements

Washoe County Commissioners approved Wednesday a Federal Lands Access Program Memorandum of Agreement providing $12.5 million in federal funding for the design and construction of improvements along the state Route 28 corridor from Incline Village to the U.S. Highway 50 junction.

NHP: Alcohol suspected in Carson City fatal pedestrian crash involving motorcycle

The Nevada Highway Patrol says alcohol is suspected in a crash Tuesday night involving a motorcyclist in which an adult man died while crossing an intersection after he was struck by a motorcycle at Stewart and Telegraph streets in Carson City.

One dead, one flown by Care Flight in grave condition after motorcycle crash with pedestrian in Carson City

UPDATE: One person is dead from injuries in a crash Tuesday night involving a motorcycle and pedestrian at Stewart and Telegraph streets, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong confirmed. The pedestrian, an older adult male, was pronounced dead at the scene. The motorcyclist, also a male adult, was taken by Care Flight to Renown Medical Center in Reno where they are suffering serious, grave injuries, Furlong said. The crash was reported at 5:27 p.m.

Sgt. Earl Mays said it appears the pedestrian was in the crosswalk when he was struck by the motorcyclist. The Nevada Highway Patrol is also at the scene investigating.

UPDATE: One person was flown by Care Flight and another having suffered serious injuries following a crash Tuesday night involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian at Stewart and Telegraph streets. CPR was being administered to one of the victims, while another was taken by ambulance to a landing zone near the DMV where a Care Flight helicopter has taken them to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

Carson City sheriff’s arrest log for Friday

A 22-year-old Carson City man, Nicholas J. Stockwell, was arrested Thursday, 1 p.m. on two felony burglary warrants out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $40,000.

— A 65-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday, 8:30 a.m. near the 200 block of Lee Street on two misdemeanor Nevada Highway Patrol failure to appear warrants, and a misdemeanor Contempt of Court warrant out of Carson City Justice Court. Officers first attempted to contact a different resident at that address and discovered the 65-year-old had three warrants out for his arrest. Bail: $1,624.

Carson City Sheriff: Nevada Day weekend sees uptick in alcohol and drug related arrests

Law enforcement and public safety issues associated with Nevada Day in Carson City have been "unusually tasking" this weekend, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. While the parade itself was calm for the most part, there was a significant uptick in alcohol and drug related arrests after the parade ended and when afternoon turned to evening.

Wellington woman injured in rollover east of Holbrook Junction in Topaz

A Wellington woman had non-life threatening injuries as a result of a single vehicle rollover accident reported at 8:10 a.m. Sunday morning in the Topaz area on State Route 208, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports. Drugs or alcohol are being investigated as a factor.

Fernley man critically injured in road rage vehicle rollover on Carson City freeway ramp

A Fernley man remains in critical condition Sunday after a road rage incident Friday caused a single vehicle rollover at the Carson City Freeway exit at Highway 50, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Care Flight called to accident on I-580 and Highway 50 ramp

UPDATE: Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said witnesses to the accident on the Carson City Freeway this afternoon were interviewed to determine if it was a hit and run that caused the rollover accident at the ramp.
A portion of the freeway was closed earlier this afternoon to southbound traffic due to cleanup and a subsequent investigation.

With first winter storm arriving Friday, Nevada officials offer winter driving tips

With the first winter storm of the fall arriving in the Sierra Friday and Saturday, the Nevada Department of Transportation and Nevada Highway Patrol offers these winter driving tips to help motorists drive more throughout the upcoming season.

On average, more than 2,000 crashes occur statewide every year due to unsafe driving in snow, ice and other wet conditions, such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or failing to maintain a lane and overcorrecting.

Man with black Elvis wig robs convenience store south of Carson City

UPDATE: The following news release was issued this morning from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office regarding Thursday night's armed robbery of a convenience store on Mica Drive south of Carson City.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Carson Country Market 924 Mica Drive, for an armed robbery that had occurred. A white male described as approximately 25 years old, 5 feet five inches, 180 pounds wearing a black (Elvis) wig, black glasses, dark hoodie, and dark pants and armed with a handgun robbed the clerk at the store.

Oregon man identified in fatal accident on Highway 50 in Stateline

A 71-year-old Oregon man died Friday morning in a single-vehicle rollover accident on Highway 50 in Stateline at Lake Tahoe, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports. Larry Dean Wells died at the scene of the accident. A passenger, Roxane Jean Freeman, 68, was taken by medical helicopter to Renown Medical Center in Reno with non-life threatening injuries.

National anti-bullying group featured tonight at Boys and Girls Club in Carson City

UPDATE: Carson City will host a presentation, the second of its kind this year, addressing the issue of school bullying, tonight, Thursday, Oct. 9 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada.

Members of Teach Anti-Bullying, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit group that works around the country with educators, parents and law enforcement, will discuss what many believe is a crisis affecting communities nationwide. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada is located at 1870 Russell Way. The public is invited and encouraged to attend this free event.

NHP IDs Silver Springs man in fatal motorcycle crash involving horse, 3 other vehicles

The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified the man who died in an Oct. 1 motorcycle crash involving a horse on Highway 50 in Silver Springs.

Stefan R. Sobkiewicz, 49, of Silver Springs, died when his 2007 Harley-Davidson motorcycle collided with a wild horse, ejecting him in which he was then struck by three vehicles in the roadway, said NHP Trooper Dave Gibson.

Motorcyclist collides with horse on Highway 50 in Silver Springs, dies after 3 vehicles strike him in roadway

A man died Wednesday night after his motorcycle collided with a horse on Highway 50 in Silver Springs and then was struck by three vehicles in the roadway after being ejected, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The unidentified adult male rider was traveling on a 2007 Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound on the highway in Lyon County west of Rocky Road when he struck the horse standing in the westbound travel lane at mile marker 25, said NHP Trooper Dave Gibson. Law enforcement was called to the scene at 8:25 p.m.

Accident at Highway 50 and Lompa Lane ties up traffic

Carson City fire and rescue were called Wednesday night to a two-vehicle accident in the westbound lane of Highway 50 and Lompa Lane shortly before 6 p.m.

The accident involved a white Volkswagen Jetta and a silver Firebird, according to dispatch. Carson City sheriff's deputies were re-directing traffic. One person was reportedly injured.

The Nevada Highway Patrol was also called to the scene.

NHP: Traffic violations, accidents down during Street Vibrations motorcycle rally

The 2014 annual Street Vibrations motorcycle officially came to a close on Sunday Sept. 28. Organizers expected between 50,000 and 100,000 participants. We do have a definitive number of participants but know that there was a phenomenal increase in highway traffic. Over the 4-day event that lasted from Thursday through Sunday, local residents saw an influx of motorcycle riders from all over the U.S.

Two motorcycle riders injured in crash near Highway 50 and Lompa Lane

Carson City fire and rescue responded to Highway 50 and Lompa Lane at the underpass Sunday morning after an accident involving two motorcycle riders. Both appear to be scraped up but OK.

The call came into dispatch at 11 a.m. Two riders, a man and woman, told arriving medical personnel they had some injuries, according to dispatch. Initial reports are the motorcycle riders crashed as a result of wet pavement.

Street Vibrations fall motorcycle rally rolls through Northern Nevada's weather changes

Rain in the valleys and snow in the Sierra hasn’t stopped the thousands of motorcycle riders from cruising through Northern Nevada this weekend for the Fall rally of Street Vibrations.

With stops in Carson City, Reno, Lake Tahoe and Virginia City, riders decked out in ponchos and extra layers are making their way through the region, taking the long and short rides in poker runs, competitions, demonstrations and exhibitions.

Woman taken by Care Flight after two-vehicle crash on Highway 50 and Deer Run Road

A woman was flown by Care Flight this morning after a two-vehicle crash in the westbound lane of Highway 50 and Deer Run Road.

The crash was reported to the Nevada Highway Patrol at 7:38 am. Traffic was redirected around the accident scene with backup on the highway.

The injured woman was taken by ambulance to the airport where a Care Flight helicopter was taking her to the trauma ward at Renown Medical Center in Reno.

The 20th annual Street Vibrations 2014 motorcycle rally begins Wednesday

The 2014 Street Vibrations motorcycle rally begins Wednesday and runs through Sunday, Sept. 28. The primary events will be located in Reno and Sparks but other events are scheduled in Carson City, Virginia City and Lake Tahoe.

This run is the 20th year for the Street Vibrations event and organizers are expecting between 50,000 and 100,000 participants. With the influx of visitors to the area, the number of traffic related issues are expected to increase.

Injuries reported in vehicle crash at Carson Street and Arrowhead

Carson City firefighters responded to a traffic accident this afternoon involving three vehicles near Carson Street and Arrowhead Drive. The accident was dispatched at around 2 p.m. At least one person was injured and will be taken to the hospital. The extent of the injuries is unknown at this time.

The Nevada Highway Patrol was responding to the scene.

One of the vehicles was a minivan, and the other a white utility truck, which pulled into a convenience store parking lot, according to dispatch. Traffic in the area is being re-directed around the accident scene.

Sparks woman dies in pedestrian accident Thursday night near McCarran and Prater Way

A 62-year-old Sparks woman was killed attempting to cross the intersection of McCarran and Prater Way in Sparks on Thursday night, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Maria Ramon Rivera-Depineda died when she was struck by a black Ford Mustang driven by a 51-year-old Sparks man. The woman died at the accident scene, reported at 9:55 p.m., said NHP Trooper Dave Gibson.

Carson City man jailed after firing handgun from inside moving car

A Carson City man was arrested Sunday on a felony charge of discharging a firearm from a moving vehicle while on his way to the rifle range, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Oswaldo Mariscal, 29, is being held on $26,137 bail after officers were contacted about a man shooting a handgun from the passenger window of a car. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
