Man jailed after Carson City sheriff's deputies find copper wire inside stolen vehicle

A 29-year-old man was arrested Tuesday on a felony charge of being in possession of stolen copper wire and burglary tools inside a stolen vehicle, according to a Carson City sheriff's deputy.

Maxwell Chinevere, a transient, was stopped by Nevada Highway Patrol troopers and subsequently arrested after an investigation by the Carson City Sheriff's Office led to the recovery of the vehicle and items stolen from a business in the 3200 block of Deer Run Road.

NHP: Florida woman dies in Highway 50 rollover east of Fallon

A 75-year-old Florida woman died in a rollover vehicle accident Wednesday on Highway 50 east of Fallon in Churchill County, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Mary Madsen of Mount Dora, Fla., died in the single vehicle accident reported at 10:15 a.m. near mile marker 63. Her husband and driver of the vehicle, Leslie Madsen, 77, received non-life threatening injuries in the accident, said NHP Trooper Dave Gibson.

Carson City Sheriff's Office nabs suspected Lake Tahoe bank robber

UPDATE: A suspect in a Friday morning bank robbery at Lake Tahoe was taken into custody in Carson City after being located by the Carson City Sheriff's Office, authorities said.

The suspect, Brent Muir, 55, of Carson City, was found by Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Mike Cullen after a vehicle pursuit by the FBI, Nevada Highway Patrol, Douglas County, Washoe County and Placer County, Calif., law officers.

Freeway traffic stalled after accident north of Galena Bridge

Reno-bound traffic on the I-580 freeway was backed up Thursday morning for at least a mile after a two-vehicle accident in which a person was trapped in one of the vehicles.

Traffic in the northbound lane north of Galena Bridge was reduced to one-lane as emergency crews worked the help free the person. The accident was reported to the Nevada Highway Patrol at 8:40 a.m. Motorists can expect delays.

Bicyclist shaken after crash at Idaho and Colorado streets

A bicyclist and vehicle collided this morning in the area of Colorado and Idaho streets. The bicyclist was shaken but did not require hospitalization, according to Carson City firefighters arriving on scene. The accident was reported at 7:20 a.m.

Today begins Bike to Work Week in Carson City. There will be an increase in bicycle commuter traffic this week, so please be extra careful along roads and intersections. Both motorists and bicyclists are urged to share the roads.

Anti-bullying campaign founder says issue is epidemic that requires community solutions

The statistic is staggering: 56 percent of school children, grades 5-12, or about 13 million nationwide say they've been a target of bullies at one time or another.

It's a problem that affects communities, families and schools. Tackling the issue takes a commitment from parents, teachers, law enforcement, elected officials and children themselves. That was the message delivered Saturday at workshop in Carson City presented by the founding members of the national nonprofit group Teach Anti-Bullying, Inc.

The free community event features, activities, ID kits for children, food, music, games and more.

On hand will be the sheriff's office K9 dogs, motorcycle patrol unit, Special Enforcement Team, stellar squad, a new SWAT unit, representatives from DARE, and the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Woman arrested on suspicion of DUI in Highway 395 accident at Stephanie Way

Three vehicles were involved in a wreck Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Highway 395 and Stephanie Way in Douglas County south of Carson City, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

A woman was arrested on suspicion of DUI in the accident that happened in the southbound left turn lane just after 4:30 p.m., said NHP Trooper Dave Gibson. One person was reported to have minor injuries.

The accident involved a blue Jeep, a white Chevy pickup and a gold Ford pickup. Details of the crash investigation were not immediately available.

Natalie Wood to lead Nevada Parole and Probation Division

Natalie Wood, a training division commander for the Nevada Department of Public Safety was appointed chief of the Division of Parole and Probation. She replaces Bernie Curtis who retired last month. Wood began her duties Monday.

Chief Wood joined the Department of Public Safety in 1999. She began with the Division of Parole and Probation, rising to the rank of Lieutenant before transferring to the Training Division as the Commander.

Two Care Flight helicopters called after accident at Highway 50 and Airport Road

At least two people suffered serious injuries in a vehicle accident that happened late Monday afternoon at the intersection of Highway 50 East and Airport Road in Carson City. Two air ambulances responded to take two people involved in the crash to the trauma care unit at Renown Medical Center in Reno.

The accident was reported at 4:26 p.m. Carson City Fire Department, the sheriff's office and the Nevada Highway Patrol were on the scene, reporting major damage to the vehicles involved.

Nevada law agencies zero in on speeders through May 10 in education campaign

Several of Nevada’s law enforcement agencies will target speeders in the northeastern region of the state through May 10 to change behaviors that have led to deadly crashes in the Silver State.

With its vast rural areas and wide roadways, Nevada is not immune from these behavioral challenges, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. In 2012, of the 258 deaths on our state’s roads, 100 lives were lost due to speeding, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The death toll related to speeding increased by 24 from the previous year.

National anti-bullying group to give May 10 talk in Carson City

Carson City will host a presentation on bullying by a Philadelphia-based nonprofit agency that works around the country with educators, parents and law enforcement.

Members of Teach Anti-Bullying, Inc. will discuss what many say is a national crisis affecting communities across the country. The Saturday, May 10 presentation, Bullying: The Silent Threat, will be presented from 10 a.m. to noon at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 West King Street, in Carson City.

Second Person Involved in Dayton Accident Dies

The driver of a vehicle involved in a crash on Highway 50 in Dayton on Tuesday has died.

Ana Laura Munoz, 18, of Carson City, was driving a black Audi when she made a left turn from Ambrose Lane to go westbound on US 50 in front of a commercial vehicle traveling eastbound and was struck in the intersection.

A passenger in the car, David Arroyo Lamas, 18, of Dayton, died Tuesday night.

Dayton teen dies in Tuesday Highway 50 accident

An 18-year-old Dayton man died in a crash involving a big rig Tuesday on Highway 50 and Ambrose Lane in Dayton, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

David Arroyo Lamas died Tuesday night at Renown Medical Center in Reno. He was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Ana Laura Munoz, 18, of Carson City. She is in critical condition, said NHP Trooper Dave Gibson.

The driver of the big rig involved in the crash is Gary Alan Williams, 61, of St. George, Utah. He was also hospitalized with undisclosed injuries.

Care Flight called to accident on Highway 50 and Pine Cone in Dayton

UPDATE: A 66-year-old Silver Springs woman was flown by Care Flight after a single vehicle accident Wednesday morning in which her car went more than 300 feet down an embankment off of Highway 50 and Pine Cone Road in Dayton, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The woman, Claire Musty, was flown to Renown Medical Center in Reno with a possible broken femur, said NHP Trooper Dan Lopez.

Carson City Sheriff's Office warns of new phone scam using law enforcement officers names

The Carson City Sheriff's Office is again receiving calls from the public in regards to money scams. The first one involves citizens being called and told that a warrant for their arrest has been issued for failure to show up for jury duty.

The caller identifies himself using an actual deputy or Nevada Highway Patrol officers name to convince the called party that this is real.

The caller has also given the name of current judges as being the ones who have signed the warrant. He will then try to convince the called party to send a MoneyPak or some other form of pre-paid debit card.

Two Care Flight helicopters sent after big rig crash in Dayton

UPDATE: Two people are in critical condition after a crash Tuesday on Highway 50 at Ambrose Lane in Dayton, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

NHP crash investigation details learned so far indicate a 2004 black Audi four-door vehicle making a left turn from Ambrose lane onto Highway 50 pulled in front of a red 2007 Wabash tractor pulling a trailer, said NHP Trooper Dave Gibson. The tractor struck the Audi in the drivers’ door with its front pushing it off onto the South shoulder.

Man jailed after allegedly injuring mother when she attempted to call 911 for help

Carson City sheriff's deputies arrested a man Sunday after he allegedly tried to take a cell phone away from his mother who was attempting to call 911 for help after he became violent with her.

The Gardnerville man, Blane Allen Frazier, was arrested to the area of Highway 395 and I-580 freeway at 3:58 p.m. He faces a felony charge of preventing a victim from reporting a crime and lesser charges of domestic battery and open container.

Carson City man stopped for speeding arrested on weapon and warrant charges

A 43-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday in the 1000 block of Roop Street on a gross misdemeanor charge of possessing a dangerous weapon and four lessor charges including two warrants for failure to appear in court.

According to the Carson City Sheriff's Office arrest report, deputies responded to the Roop location to assist Sgt. Scott McDaniel on a traffic stop, where the man was stopped on suspicion of driving 45 mph in a 25 mph zone.

NHP traffic violation awareness campaign includes bicyclists

Recently, the Nevada Highway Patrol participated in an enforcement initiative identifying motorists who committed traffic violations when sharing the road with bicyclists. During this enforcement period NHP Troopers observed over two hundred violations.

Motorists were stopped and educated on the laws pertaining to vehicles sharing the roadway with bicycles.

NDOT builds memorial honoring road workers who died at Nevada road project sites

A memorial ribbon is being built this week at the Nevada Department of Transportation headquarters in Carson City that will memorialize the 25 NDOT employees who have died since the agency began while doing road construction work.

The ribbon is part of a campaign recognizing National Work Zone Awareness Week going on now through Friday. Once finished, the memorial at NDOT headquarters, 1263 South Stewart Street, will be draped with potted flowers.

Attorney General and Office Receives Patriotic Employer Award

Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto and her office received the “Patriotic Employer” award given by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). The Award recognizes the Nevada Attorney General’s Office for “supporting employee participation in America’s National Guard and Reserve Force.”

“We are thankful for the exceptional service of our employees who are also reservists and National Guard members,” said Masto. “We are honored to be nominated for the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Patriotic Employer Award.”

Motorcycle crash north of Virginia City claims life of Fallon man

A Fallon man died Sunday in a motorcycle crash north of Virginia City, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
James Edward Cooper, 67, died from injuries after being taken by Care Flight to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

NHP troopers were dispatched at 12:50 p.m. to the crash on State Route 341 approximately 2 miles north of Virginia City, said Trooper Dave Gibson.

Two dead, one critically injured after driver going wrong way crashes on I-580 in Reno

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in a wrong-way vehicle crash that killed two people early Saturday morning on Interstate 580 near Plumb Lane in Reno, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. A 70-year-old woman is in critical condition at Renown Medical Center in Reno.

Kenneth C. Lee, 23, of Reno and Hans-Hartmut Kaesgen, 71, of Berea, Ohio died as a result of the crash reported at 3:26 a.m., said NHP Trooper Karen Garretson.

Motorcycle driver dies from injuries from March 22 crash

The driver of a motorcycle that crashed into a truck at the corner of Fairview and Roop on March 22 has died.

Andrey L. Gallegos 20, of Sparks, succumbed to his injuries after he was taken off of life support on March 30, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. Mr. Gallegos had received severe injuries sustained from the accident.

Safety improvements built into Highway 50 repaving plans between Carson City and Dayton

A $6-plus million repaving project along a stretch of Highway 50 east of Carson City is planned for late spring through summer with some safety improvements built into the plans, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.

Merge lane improvements, slope flattening, the installation of a t-intersection and turn lanes for easier access at Flint Drive and State Route 341 are scheduled as part of the safety upgrades on Highway 50 between Deer Run Road and east of SR341, said NDOT spokeswoman Meg Ragonese.

Driver uninjured in Highway 50 accident a mile up Spooner

Carson City Fire Department responded Thursday afternoon to a single vehicle accident in the westbound lane of Highway 50 approximately a mile up. First responders report the driver of the vehicle was standing outside of it. Carson City Fire Department reports the driver wasn't injured.

Also responding to the accident were Nevada Highway Patrol and Douglas County Sheriff's Office. The report came into NHP dispatch at 2:24 and Carson City dispatch at 2:27 p.m.
