National anti-bullying group featured tonight at Boys and Girls Club in Carson City
UPDATE: Carson City will host a presentation, the second of its kind this year, addressing the issue of school bullying, tonight, Thursday, Oct. 9 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada.
Members of Teach Anti-Bullying, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit group that works around the country with educators, parents and law enforcement, will discuss what many believe is a crisis affecting communities nationwide. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada is located at 1870 Russell Way. The public is invited and encouraged to attend this free event.
The presentation, “Bullying: The Silent Threat” is part of efforts statewide and nationally to address the problem, said retired Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Michael "Sean" Giurlani who brought the group here earlier this year.
“It’s a strong message that comes at a time where it does hit close home,” said Giurlani. “Bullying is a nationwide problem that needs to be addressed at every school in every community. Our hope by bringing Teach Anti-Bullying here, we can give parents, teachers and children the right tools to embrace as these issues come up.”
Dr. Claudio Cerullo, the founder and President of Teach Anti-Bullying, Inc., as well as Ms. Daniela Redpath, the organization’s vice president, will discuss how bullying crosses all spectrums: gender, race and socio-economic. The presentation pays particular attention to ways educators, parents and children can address the problem before it escalates, and finding solution-based measures in dealing with the issues so that students don't have to live in fear of repercussions.
Fifty-six percent of school children, grades 5-12, or about 13 million nationwide say they've been a target of bullies at one time or another, Cerullo noted in the May presentation.
Sponsors are JM Furniture, the Sausage Factory, Carson City Sheriff's Office Association, The Nevada State Law Enforcement Officers Association, and the Carson City Firefighters Association.
