July 23, 5:30 pm – Tahoe Rim Trail - south side Hwy 50, Meet at the Highway 50 park in ride where we will carpool up to the Spooner Summit trailhead.

Each year, thousands of homeless and at-risk children in our local communities return to school without the basic supplies they need.

Operation Backpack is able to provide thousands of backpacks, grade-specific school supplies, and a variety of support services to homeless, at-risk and foster children from Pre-school to High School levels throughout the Northern Nevada regions.

LBL Equine Rescue in Silver Springs, Nev., is excited to announce its first Trainer Challenge Judging Day, July 20 at 10 a.m. You will get to watch our trainers show off what they've done with our wild horses! All horses will be available for adoption, including other rescues.

Heading into Monday, July 15, 2019 the Carson City region is looking at sunny skies, breezy conditions and a slight cooling trend over the next couple days, according to the National Weather Service. In the meantime, it looks to be another fine day in the capital city. Ahead there's a youth mountain bike camp, a presentation by an AARP lobbyist, art showings and more.

The public is invited to join us for the official campaign Kickoff for Aaron Sims who will be declaring his candidacy for Mayor of Carson City.

This event will be a barbecue and a speaking engagement. We will have good food and music. It is Saturday, July 20.

The event will be held at the Firefighters Memorial on the East side of Mills Park. Entrance is just off of Saliman Rd across from the high school. We are asking for an RSVP which you can do by following the link to the facebook event at the bottom.

Doors open at 11:30AM and the event will start at noon.

TOCCATA-Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus opens its concert series at the elegant Genoa Lakes Golf Club Ballroom at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 31st with a special program.

This week's edition of It's Your City features Adam Whitney, filling in for host Cortney Bloomer, with special guest Jayme Watts, owner of Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint in Carson City and co-founder of this Saturday's annual Sassabration.

Tuesday Evening Hike

July 16, 5:30- pm – Skunk Harbor, Lake Tahoe. Meet at the Highway 50 Park n Ride where we will carpool up to the trailhead.

The Carson City Fair is returning for its third year this month, and it’s bringing big changes and several new events to its roster including a demolition derby, American Ninja Farmer contests, jello eating contests, animal auctions, and more.

Heading into Monday, July 8, 2019 we want to give a big shout out to all the local organizations and agencies that made this Fourth of July weekend around the Carson City region one to remember. For Monday we're looking at a number of events including a basketball camp at the MAC, a children's theater camp, a local talk with the Carson City Airport manager, art activities, line dancing and more.

Carson City BMX will host the annual Race for Life on Sunday, July 21. USABMX started this race and fundraising effort to honor Todd Kingsbury, a young BMX rider who fought and lost his fight with leukemia.

This race raises money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Additionally, keeping with Todd’s love for BMX, promoting this race where you do not have to be a USABMX member. So please join us on 21 July, with signups 9 to 10 a.m.. Cost is $10. If under 18, please bring a parent to sign forms.

Jeff Glass has been teaching entrepreneurial classes to the youth of Carson City for years, and now, as his students grow up, they’re branching out to run businesses of their own.

One such student is Paul Klemm, the owner of Carson City’s Rehaul.

“Rehaul started as an effort to develop a student run business,” said Glass.

Second Saturday Easy Hike, Davis Creek park, near Bower's Mansion. Please join Muscle Powered as we hike the Discovery Trail at Davis Creek Regional Park located off of old highway 395 near Bowers Mansion. 25 Davis Creek Road, Washoe Valley, NV. On this hike, we will explore the transition zone between the high desert and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. See first hand the changes in the ecology that surrounds us as we move between the Great Basin and the Sierras. Restrooms are available.

Hike distance will be approximately 2 miles, depending on trail condition.

Water and closed-toed shoes are required. Hat and poles recommended. If it is raining, snowing, or air quality is unsafe due to smoke, hikes will be cancelled. Check www.musclepowered.org/calendar or Facebook.

Thursday Morning Hike
July 11, 8 AM – Eagle Ridge trail, Genoa. Meet at the trailhead for the Clear Creek trail, 1/2 mile west of Jacks Valley Elementary School on Jacks Valley Road to carpool or caravan to trailhead.

Tuesday Evening Hike

July 9, 5:30 PM – Secret Harbor, Lake Tahoe, Meet at the Hwy 50 Park n Ride where we will carpool up to the trailhead.

All Tuesday evening hikes will be 4-6 miles in length and 1 1/2 hours or more duration. Contact Sharon Coates at scoates7515@gmail.com, if you have questions.

The Fourth of July will be colored with parades, barbecues, carnivals, concerts and plenty of fireworks around Carson City, Carson Valley, Lake Tahoe and Virginia City.

Capitol City Poker Run to benefit Muscle Powered will take place this Saturday, July 6 in Carson City. This is a bicycle “poker" ride that will start at Silver Strike CrossFit and will ride throughout Carson City.

All proceeds benefit Muscle Powered. Best Poker hand at the end of the ride will win a bike from the Bike Smith. Raffle prizes and Grand Prize to be announced at Silver Strike CrossFit where a good truck will also be present.

If there’s anything a family dog hates more than not being allowed to put their head in your lap while you eat, its fireworks.

Every year, Rovers, Spots and Fidos across the city howl at the indecency of the human-beloved summer holiday.

This year, while the town gathers at Mills Park in Carson City to watch the annual fireworks, which begin at around 9:30 p.m. please: keep your dogs and cats safe and cool indoors.

As we go forward and move ahead into Tuesday, July 2, 2019 we're looking at another sunny day, all the better as we prepare to celebrate Independence Day. Are you ready for July 4 fireworks at Mills Park? As a Tuesday warmup, get the heart pumping during Muscle Powered's three fitness outings. Plus there's art showings, hands-on science activities in Silver City, an evening archery shoot, a viewing of the 1953 film "From Here to Eternity" at the Brewery Arts Center hosted by the Carson City Classic Cinema Club and more. Enjoy the day.

Heading into Monday, the first day of July 2019 we leave an action-packed weekend behind us with a long Independence Day holiday week ahead. The activities continue, albeit at a slower place for the first day of the work week. There's art showings and activities for adults and kids, a My Place Hotels job fair, a talk featuring the program director at Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, a swing dance class and more. Enjoy the day!

Stop by the east side of Mills Park on Sunday for the Parks Foundation’s monthly open house at the Wungnema House, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.

The Wungnema House is the charming stone cottage located on the east side of Mills Park across from Carson High. It was built by a family of skilled Hopi stonemasons shortly after WWII and served as the family’s home until the early 1970s.

In this edition of It's Your City, host Cortney Bloomer sits down with Carol Scott of Wild Horse Children's Theater as it prepares to launch production of the Tony Award winning Broadway hit "Newsies" in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center.

Last Saturday morning 15 intrepid Carson City area "Trash Mobbers" came out to clean up the wetlands to protect the birds and wildlife. We met near the Humane Society on Airport and then walked along the Carson Freeway Multi-Use two thirds of mile to access the wetlands area.

Heading into Thursday, June 27, 2019, there's plenty to do and see around the Carson City area as we march toward an action-packed weekend. There's a morning Muscle Powered walk, Food Truck Thursday at Mills Park, a Farmers Market in Dayton, a discussion on climate change at Western Nevada College, a history presentation on Chinese woodcutters at the Nevada State Museum, a presentation by the NNDA Executive Director at a GOP monthly meeting, Cruise Night at Wing Stop, an information meeting on the Ross Gold Park master plan hosted by Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space. Carson City is just one area that is noticing a worldwide trend of labor shortages in restaurants, and due to that shortage, several locally-owned eateries are being forced to reduce the number of days they're open during the week, or stop serving dinner.
