Events around Carson City for Monday, July 15
Heading into Monday, July 15, 2019 the Carson City region is looking at sunny skies, breezy conditions and a slight cooling trend over the next couple days, according to the National Weather Service. In the meantime, it looks to be another fine day in the capital city. Ahead there's a youth mountain bike camp, a presentation by an AARP lobbyist, art showings and more.
Do you have an event or happening you'd like people to know about? Tell us about it by clicking here, filling out the details and we'll tell Carson City area readers about your event or happening. Here's what's happening Monday:
— Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'New Crop 2019' exhibit. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "New Crop 2019", by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sculptor Mark Combs gives viewers two approaches to his metalwork. His earlier distressed metal car-part sculptures are ornamented with soldered rods and bolts reflecting a ruptured system both socially and figuratively. His carefully hammered bone pieces came into shape after hours of forging as a nod to death and celebrations of life. Photographer Frances Melhop documents aging rural structures with classic color photography. In Vanish, her printed enlargements of unnamed 19th century portraits on silk are elevated to fly across our vision like fleeting memories.
— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Fast Lane, Slow Bake. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) presents an exhibition, "Fast Lane/Slow Bake" by artists Cyndy Brenneman and Tom Drakulich. CCAI will host a reception for the artists on July 12 from 5:00-7:00 p.m.; the artists will give a brief talk about their work at 5:30 p.m. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings or by appointment. For Sierra Room access visit the Carson City Meetings and Events page or call 775-283-7421. Visit the CCAI website for more information.
— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Graphically Defined. 8 to 5 p.m. Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) is delighted to present Graphically Defined, a group exhibition of work by seventeen Western Nevada College students. This exhibit includes a wide variety of art including ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting and photography that shows the diversity of the students’ creativity. The Business Resource Innovation Center (BRIC) is open Monday through Friday 8:00-12:00 p.m. and 1:00-4:00 p.m.
— Open Studio Basic Painting at Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students will work on their own paintings from subject matter they have chosen. The instructor, Mark Tompkins, will work one-on-one with each student to help them complete their project from start to finish. Each student must supply their own materials. Students may choose to paint in either water colors, oils, or acrylic paints. This is an open enrollment drop-in class, no need to sign-up. Tuition: $25 per session or $40 for the day. Classes: 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m.; located in the Painting Studio. 449 West King Street, Carson City.
— Carson City's Food For Thought to provide daily no cost lunches for kids this summer. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to noon. In a last minute announcement, Carson City based non-profit Food For Thought, Inc. will continue the Summer Lunch Program during the 2019 season. The program provides free and nutritious lunches to all children under 18. Lunch must be eaten onsite and will be served daily, Monday thru Friday, from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. in Carson City starting Monday, June 17 until August 9. This year only one serving location is available and will take place at The Bridge Church at 901 N. Stewart Street, Carson City. The Summer Lunch Program provides meals to area children who are unable to access other lunch programs during the months off from school.
— AARP lobbyist to speak at Carson City Democratic luncheon. 11:30 a.m. Featured speaker at Monday's Carson City Democratic luncheon will be Mary Liveratti, who served as AARP's Nevada state president for six years before retiring in 2018. She has served as a volunteer advocate on behalf of legislation impacting seniors. At the luncheon, she will review the AARP-advocated bills that successfully became law during the 80th session, as well as others that didn't cross the finish line, including those likely to reemerge during the 81st session in 2021.
Liveratti is a former deputy director of the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services, and 24-year veteran of the Division for Aging and Disability Services. This event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Monday, July 15th, in the banquet room of Carson City's Round Table, on Retail Drive just off College Parkway. Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, these luncheons help keep the lights on at Carson City's Democratic HQ. Suggested donations of $5 or more gratefully accepted but are not required. All are welcome. For further information contact Rich Dunn at 434-8783 or richdunn@aol.com.
— Carson City Parks and Rec offers summer bicycling programs for children. 4:30 p.m. The Shred Kids Mountain Bike Camps program returns for a second summer. The next camp date is July 15-29 and There will be another camp August 12-16 (intermediate). All camps will be out at the trailhead for Ash Canyon on the corner of Foothill and Winnie. The camps run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. each day. We have had a lot of community support for this program that we are really grateful for. The camp is run completely by volunteer coaches from the Carson High Cycling Team. Because this program is volunteer ran, it allows us to keep the costs to the participant much lower, for only $35 for the week. A similar camp elsewhere would cost significantly more. Additionally, Bike Habitat has supported the program by donating time to fix up our fleet of bikes so we have a limited supply of bikes available for participants who don’t have access to a bike. There is no additional charge to use one of our bikes, we just want to get kids out on the trails.
