Carson City Sheriff Deputy Carl Howell has proven this. Maybe one day, when a child looks up the explanation of “hero” in the encyclopedia, he’ll see Howell’s name next to it.

A procession through Carson City this morning for fallen Sheriff's Deputy Carl Howell began at the Carson City Sheriff's Office on Musser Street and moved north along Carson Street, where it met with law enforcement agencies from around the region. Thousands of Carson City residents lined Musser and North Carson Street this morning to pay their respects to fallen Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Carl Howell who died in the line of duty on Saturday, August 15, 2015 responding to a domestic violence call.

The procession was led by the Carson City Motor Patrol Unit, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong and Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval. It was followed by dozens of law enforcement agencies from around the region who came to pay their respects.

A funeral procession through Carson City for fallen Sheriff’s Deputy Carl Howell will be Thursday, 9 a.m. beginning at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office on Musser Street and will move along North Carson Street on its way to services in Reno.

The procession will be led by a fire truck that will carry Howell’s casket past the Nevada State Capitol and proceed north along Carson Street. It will meet up with a larger procession of law officers that will be staged at North Carson Street and College Parkway.

Thousands gathered with candles and prayers at the Nevada law enforcement memorial at the State Legislative complex Saturday to mourn the loss of Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Carl Howell who was shot and killed in the line of duty responding to a domestic violence call.

The capital city community has extended an outpouring of support for a Carson City Sheriff's Office deputy who was shot and killed early Saturday morning responding to a domestic violence call at an east Carson City home.

With officers, administrators and volunteer in police service personnel streaming out of the sheriff's administrative office during a series of briefings Saturday morning and afternoon, they've been met randomly by Carson City and surrounding area community members, bringing flowers, cards, bracelets, statuettes, along with words of respect, sorrow and to offer condolences.

UPDATE: Tonight at 8 p.m. there will be a candle light vigil at the Peace Officer Memorial site in Carson City at Nevada State Legislature. Please come out and show your support for the Carson City Sheriff's Office Deputy who gave his life, for his family....both blood and in blue, and the entire community of Carson City as we all mourn the loss of a true hero.

A Carson City Sheriff's deputy was killed in a shooting early Saturday morning during an exchange of gunfire on Montez Drive on the northeast side of Carson City. The suspect also died, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The following is a statement by Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong:
At 2:18 a.m., Carson City Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the report of a domestic battery involving physical injury at the 4100 block of Montez Drive in East Carson City. As officers arrived at the scene, they reported physical injury to the female. Within minutes, the male suspect came out of the house and opened fire on the officers, killing one. Additional units arrived in the area and secured the residence, evacuating three children (ages 8-13) and one adult. The suspect was located dead at the scene.

The Carson City Sheriff’s has relinquished the investigation of this incident to the Reno Police Department.

Officer and family information is not being released at this time.

A Carson City Sheriff's deputy was critically injured during an exchange of gunfire on Mondtez Drive on the northeast side of Carson City Saturday morning at around 3 a.m.

The area has been cordoned off and the Carson City Sheriff crime lab unit, Nevada Highway Patrol and Douglas County Sheriff deputies are on the scene. More details to follow.

"I live in east Carson and was up at about 2:30AM this AM (Sat 8-15-15) and heard 10-15 shoots fired followed by multiple sirens over the next 45 minutes and also a helicopter flying north along what looked like the freeway & east on hwy 50."

UPDATE: A high risk traffic stop at around 4 p.m. Wednesday led to the arrest of a 35-year-old man after he was seen driving a stolen pickup.

A Carson City man arrested Saturday on felony warrant charges from another county, also faces a charge of possession of stolen property after he was found on a mountain bike stolen earlier from a Divot Road home, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

Six Carson City Sheriff’s Office reserve deputies graduated the UNRPD Police Academy Friday at the University of Nevada, Reno.
The graduates are Jeremy Garcia, Michael Jerauld, Daniel Reece, Alan Sharp, Cole Sonnemann and Randy Watkins.

UNRPD Reserve Academy Graduation includes six Carson City Sheriff's Office reserve deputies that will be NV POST Certified Reserve Deputies. Graduation is on Friday, August 7, 2015, 5 p.m. at the Joe Crowley Student Union Building on campus.

A 49-year-old Dayton man was arrested Friday in 1400 block of Medical Parkway on a felony drug charge and misdemeanor trespassing, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

A 29-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday in the 3400 block of Airport Road on a felony home invasion charge, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will be handling the investigation of an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a Gardnerville Ranchos man Thursday night.

The man, identified as Mark Perkins, 48, was killed after reportedly threatening to kill a neighbor and shoot a police officer, and later confronting officers outside of his home on Monument Peak while pointing two weapons at multiple officers.

A 22-year inmate who faces multiple sex crime related charges involving minors, had two additional charges — lewdness with a minor under the age of 14 — filed against him Wednesday, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Jacob Daniel Houser was booked on the charges, with $500,000 bondable bail.

Carson City sheriff’s investigators are looking for a man who stole a wallet from an elderly customer at a south Carson City casino on Tuesday.

The suspect, in these photos and video below and a second video here, grabbed the wallet out of the hands of an 87-year-old man at Bodines Casino in the 5000 block of South Carson St. and ran away, last seen heading toward Fuji Park, said Carson City Sheriff’s Office Detective Sam Hatley.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in locating a 15-year-old runaway.

Jamie Hardiman ran away from her residence in Carson City on July 17. Jamie had run away a few days prior and was found in Reno. Jamie returned home and ran away the same night. Jamie left a note that stated that she ran away and would not return.

A 52-year-old Sun Valley man was arrested early Sunday on felony drug charges following a traffic stop in which the suspect was driving the wrong way on I-580, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

Thomas Higgins was arrested at 4:12 a.m. He faces felony charges of possession of dangerous drugs without a prescription and two charges of possession with intent to sell. He also faces misdemeanor charges of DUI and reckless driving.

Carson City sheriff's deputies made a handful of arrests Friday in the 600 block of South Roop Street on a follow up narcotics complaint.

According to the arrest report, officers knocked on the door of the residence where there had been a complaint of drug use.

A 34-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday in the 200 block of Mary Street on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

A 20-year-old Dayton man was arrested Friday at 12:32 p.m. in the 1200 block of Woodside Drive on a felony charge of child abuse causing physical harm or mental harm and misdemeanor charges of domestic battery and assault, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

A 28-year-old Carson City man and known absconder was arrested Wednesday on multiple felony warrant charges after a tip from parole and probation officers led to a residence where he was staying, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

UPDATE 1PM: Two people involved in a drug investigation that resulted in their arrests have been identified. Dennis Myers was arrested Tuesday on a Douglas County warrant. He faces charges of drug trafficking of a controlled substance and sales of a controlled substance. Arrested at a home on Northgate and Hampton streets early Wednesday morning was Jose Colunga on two unrelated warrants.

Two suspects have been arrested following a search warrant early Wednesday morning at a north Carson City home that drug enforcement authorities say was part of a network of methamphetamine, heroin and prescription pill sales in the area that involved gang members from Southern California.

Two men were arrested on DUI related charges on Monday, with one of the suspects also facing drug charges after prescription pills were recovered during a vehicle inventory, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

When a sheriff’s department as small as Carson City’s loses an active duty officer as it recently did, that agency needs to have a contingency plan to deal with such a significant loss. Officials with the department said while it’s difficult, they can deal with the loss of an officer.

A 35-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Saturday on felony charges of possession of a firearm with altered serial number and grand larceny of a firearm, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.
