Column: Heroism happens every day

Heroic acts aren’t random or accidental by nature. They are deliberate. A person has to summon the courage to act bravely and heroically. Even in a split second.

Carson City Sheriff Deputy Carl Howell has proven this. Maybe one day, when a child looks up the explanation of “hero” in the encyclopedia, he’ll see Howell’s name next to it.

A procession through Carson City this morning for fallen Sheriff's Deputy Carl Howell began at the Carson City Sheriff's Office on Musser Street and moved north along Carson Street, where it met with law enforcement agencies from around the region. Carson City pays respects to Deputy Carl Howell

Thousands of Carson City residents lined Musser and North Carson Street this morning to pay their respects to fallen Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Carl Howell who died in the line of duty on Saturday, August 15, 2015 responding to a domestic violence call.

The procession was led by the Carson City Motor Patrol Unit, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong and Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval. It was followed by dozens of law enforcement agencies from around the region who came to pay their respects.

A funeral procession through Carson City for fallen Sheriff’s Deputy Carl Howell will be Thursday, 9 a.m. beginning at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office on Musser Street and will move along North Carson Street on its way to services in Reno.

The procession will be led by a fire truck that will carry Howell’s casket past the Nevada State Capitol and proceed north along Carson Street. It will meet up with a larger procession of law officers that will be staged at North Carson Street and College Parkway.

Grieving community mourns loss of Carson City sheriff's deputy at candlelight vigil

Thousands gathered with candles and prayers at the Nevada law enforcement memorial at the State Legislative complex Saturday to mourn the loss of Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Carl Howell who was shot and killed in the line of duty responding to a domestic violence call.

The capital city community has extended an outpouring of support for a Carson City Sheriff's Office deputy who was shot and killed early Saturday morning responding to a domestic violence call at an east Carson City home.

With officers, administrators and volunteer in police service personnel streaming out of the sheriff's administrative office during a series of briefings Saturday morning and afternoon, they've been met randomly by Carson City and surrounding area community members, bringing flowers, cards, bracelets, statuettes, along with words of respect, sorrow and to offer condolences.

A Carson City Sheriff's deputy was killed in a shooting early Saturday morning during an exchange of gunfire on Montez Drive on the northeast side of Carson City. The suspect also died, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The following is a statement by Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong:
At 2:18 a.m., Carson City Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the report of a domestic battery involving physical injury at the 4100 block of Montez Drive in East Carson City. As officers arrived at the scene, they reported physical injury to the female. Within minutes, the male suspect came out of the house and opened fire on the officers, killing one. Additional units arrived in the area and secured the residence, evacuating three children (ages 8-13) and one adult. The suspect was located dead at the scene.

The Carson City Sheriff’s has relinquished the investigation of this incident to the Reno Police Department.

Officer and family information is not being released at this time.

A Carson City Sheriff's deputy was critically injured during an exchange of gunfire on Mondtez Drive on the northeast side of Carson City Saturday morning at around 3 a.m.

The area has been cordoned off and the Carson City Sheriff crime lab unit, Nevada Highway Patrol and Douglas County Sheriff deputies are on the scene. More details to follow.

"I live in east Carson and was up at about 2:30AM this AM (Sat 8-15-15) and heard 10-15 shoots fired followed by multiple sirens over the next 45 minutes and also a helicopter flying north along what looked like the freeway & east on hwy 50."

Jamie Hardiman ran away from her residence in Carson City on July 17. Jamie had run away a few days prior and was found in Reno. Jamie returned home and ran away the same night. Jamie left a note that stated that she ran away and would not return.

Thomas Higgins was arrested at 4:12 a.m. He faces felony charges of possession of dangerous drugs without a prescription and two charges of possession with intent to sell. He also faces misdemeanor charges of DUI and reckless driving.
