Carson City Sheriff's Office to lead investigation into fatal Douglas County shooting
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will be handling the investigation of an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a Gardnerville Ranchos man Thursday night.
The man, identified as Mark Perkins, 48, was killed after reportedly threatening to kill a neighbor and shoot a police officer, and later confronting officers outside of his home on Monument Peak while pointing two weapons at multiple officers.
Deputies responded to a report Thursday afternoon at approximately 2 p.m. that Perkins was armed with multiple weapons and had threatened his wife.
According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Perkins told his wife he was going to shoot a police officer and that he intended to kill a neighbor.
Subsequent to the investigation, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office obtained an arrest warrant for Perkins for assault with a deadly weapon and a search warrant for his residence located in the 900 block of Monument Peak Drive in the Gardnerville Ranchos.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reported that due to the circumstances of the investigation, the SWAT and Crisis Negotiation Teams were activated to serve the warrants.
As members of the SWAT team were deploying to secure the suspect residence and evacuate surrounding homes, Douglas County Undersheriff Paul Howell said Perkins came out of his home armed and confronted the deputies at approximately 5:30 p.m. During the confrontation, Perkins pointed two weapons at multiple officers, Howell said.
The officers fired their weapons, Perkins was struck by the deputies’ gunfire and died at the scene.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has requested that the Carson City Sheriff’s Office conduct the criminal investigation of the officer involved shooting.
Howell said the six Deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave in accordance to Department Policies governing the use of deadly force.
