Funeral services for Carson City sheriff's deputy Carl Howell will be Thursday in Reno
UPDATE: Funeral services for Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Carl Howell, killed in the line of duty early Saturday on a domestic violence call, will be held on Thursday, Aug. 20, 11 a.m. at the Reno Events Center.
Gov. Brian Sandoval signed an Executive Order Sunday ordering flags to half-staff now through sunset, August 22, 2015, in remembrance of Deputy Howell. The U.S. Honor Flag will be presented at the funeral.
Because of insufficient facility accommodations to support the anticipated seating capacity for services the funeral will be held at the Reno Events Center, 400 North Center Street.
The essential funeral procession (family and dignitary) will begin at Fitzhenry’s Funeral Home, 3945 Fairview Drive, proceed past the Carson City Public Safety Complex and Nevada State Capital, and then join the remainder of the procession at North Carson Street and College Parkway intersection. The procession is expected to begin shortly after 9 a.m.
Howell, a former U.S Marine veteran, leaves a wife, Rachel Howell, and four children ages 7-12. The family lives in Lyon County.
"Sheriff Ken Furlong apologizes to the entire Carson Community Family that Funeral Services could not be held locally. That decision was made only after the tremendous out-pouring of community strength and support became so evident," according to a news release.
The Carson City Deputy Sheriff's Association has established a fund for fallen officer Carl Howell. A donation account has been established at Heritage Bank of Nevada, “Carl Howell Memorial Fund” or account # 2000012522.
While the staff, employees and families of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office have been devastated by this tragedy, law enforcement service levels have remained constant without interruption.
Some delays in service response times to “Non-Emergency” calls for service may be experienced during funeral services. The Sheriff’s Office administrative functions will be closed Thursday, August 20, to allow employees to participate in funeral services.
Normal operations will resume at 8 a.m. Friday, August 21.
The staff of the Sheriff’s Office wishes to extend our gratitude to the Nevada State Health and Human Services for providing an immediate response “Crisis Response Team” for employees and others who have been devastated by this tragedy. Both individual and group needs are being assessed and met for the short and long term bereavement, according to the news release.
Carson City government, led by Mayor Bob Crowell and City Manager Nick Marano, has directed the Carson City Human Resources Department to provide services for city employees and families (when applicable). City Manager Marano has authorized Public Works to perform environmental rehabilitation of the immediate area, where necessary, surrounding the critical incident. Extended services pertaining to the family of the deceased officer will remain confidential.
