Senator Square: Rivalry touches the hearts of everyone

In light of recent political events, which need no commentary here, two rival high schools engaged in an equally important contest that set the standard for gracious rivalry to show this embattled country how it is done on the day after the election.

The faculties of Carson High School and Douglas High School came together to compete in an exciting game of basketball. But, more importantly, they did so for the benefit of others, because the proceeds went to the American Heart Association.

The game was a nail-biter with DHS winning by a mere three points. However — and allow all attention must be drawn to this — the American Heart Association was the winner of over $1,600.

To add to this joyful competition, a choir of CHS teachers and students sang the National Anthem to open the game with mutual pride for this great country. Teachers on both sides enjoyed the evening, and the students on both sides had an even better time, rallying and cheering for their teachers’ well-played and entertaining game. The cheerleaders and students cheered and sang to bring smiles to everyone.

At the game’s conclusion, t-shirts were presented to the players with the logo “Even Rivals Have Heart” to represent their support of the American Heart Association. The evening remained a positive display of responsible citizenship and civility in the midst of competition as it always should be with the citizens of this great country.

Speech and Debate

CHS Speech and Debate has been included in the National Speech and Debate Association 100 Club. This is awarded to schools who have earned at least 100 degrees by earning points through competition and speaking events. This club makes up the top 23 percent of all schools nationwide.

CHS debate would also like to thank and recognize Michael Hohl Honda for becoming a team sponsor for the 2016-2017 school year. The team's next competition is Nov. 18-19 at Wooster High School. 

NHS Adopts Mark Twain Elementary

NHS has adopted Mark Twain Elementary School for a Thanksgiving Dinner Food Drive. The plan is too feed 20-25 families. All NHS members have items they must bring, but they want to encourage the entire CHS community to get involved.

Because it is a competition among NHS members, they will be visiting many to solicit help in acquiring these food items before and by Nov. 22. All items are to be delivered to room 221, and drop off begins Nov. 10. Help NHS fulfill its goal by supplying them with what they need to make this drive complete. Family baskets will be given to Mark Twain Elementary on Nov. 22 after school.

CHIP: Carson High Incentive Program

These randomly chosen students demonstrated the life skill of timeliness through perfect attendance and being on time to all their classes.

Winners are awarded a certificate and a gift certificate good for a free drink and a free food item at the CHS Student Store.  

Dodgeball Tournament


The CHS Dodgeball Tournament is almost here. Signups are from Nov. 21–Dec. 2 at the student store. Six people are needed for a team with at least two girls on each team. The cost is $3 per team player. The tournament will be Dec. 6-16.

Honor Choir

Congratulations to CHS Sophomore Max Deeb for being selected to become a member of the American Choral Directors Association National High School Honor Choir. Over 2,300 10-12 grade students auditioned for this 300-voice ensemble, which will perform under the direction of Eric Whitacre at the ACDA National Convention in Minneapolis, MN, in March 2017. Max is one of only 38 Second Basses selected by audition from the entire country.

Link Crew Senior Class Photo Project

Link Crew is working on a project to decorate a wall at CHS with senior class photos of the past graduating classes. If anyone is willing to donate, or even allow Link Crew to borrow and scan their senior class panorama picture from the past, please contact scavener@carson.k12.nv.us. Donate to this noble cause and become immortalized as having been a part of Carson High School.

Student of the Week

Christy Krahn is a hard working student. She is very responsible in everything she does. She is a great communicator and participates whenever she can. CHS is grateful for all Kristy does for the school and its students.

Senior Spotlight

This week’s senior in the spotlight is Alyssa Woodward. Alyssa maintains a 4.6 GPA while taking a full course load, including 4 AP classes, working part-time, and serving as CHS Senior Class President.

During her last three and a half years, she has been a part of National Honor Society, Link Crew, Leadership, Key Club and Volleyball. She is a community volunteer with Carson Tahoe Hospital, blood drives, track meets, and the Salvation Army. Last year, Alyssa volunteered to help a student with his Eagle Scout community service project and assisted in building a playground at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

Alyssa completed a six-week internship this past summer with a Carson City surgeon to explore her career goal. She will be applying to the University of Nevada, Reno’s BS-MD Program. She plans to major in Bio-Chemistry, attend medical school, and ultimately become a physician.

For her Senior Project, Alyssa is currently working on planning a race to raise money for a scholarship fund to be established in memory of her brother, Jordan Woodward. She plans to hold the race in March, so stay tuned for more information, and to support this generous scholarship opportunity for CHS students.

Alyssa's resilience, drive, and commitment to excellence are impressive. CHS is thankful for her service to the school and community, and looks forward to seeing what the future holds for her.
